Culture Joyful noise and fellowship
I met some Phaneroo fellows on a drunken evening walk, and they started trying to convince me to go to their concert.
Since I was tipsy and talkative, I bit. I asked them if they thought colonialism was a good thing, and one girl confidently responded, “It brought us Jesus,” as we stood in the middle of a dusty road with a massive flooded pothole just meters away from us, lined by sacks of rubbish from last Saturday.
Everybody knows a version of that exact pothole, from any side of town.
I wanted to slap a child of God right there and then.
Anyway my neighbor is blasting Hillsong music early this morning and at this point in my spiritual journey, the music sounds more and more like propaganda being drilled into ready minds.
The songs are easy to sing, simple lyrics, catchy, and they all sound the same with the same message, conveyed in an American accent.
“I believe in Jesus, Jesus is Lord. Let the Holy Spirit take over. I am nothing, you have everything. Set me on fire. Gracefully broken. Chains and whatnot.” Even if you are 4 years old and have no concept of what a spirit or a Hebrew carpenter is, and you’ve never been in chains.
Starts off soothing and builds up in intensity until everyone around is in tears and promising their life and belongings.
Anyway.
I’m all for worshipping whoever you worship. In fact, I envy people who still believe.
Life without some sort of spiritual power backing you up is something else.
