Other What was your (specific, non-obvious) “welcome to Madison” moment? ***bonus points if you’re a non-Midwesterner

Upvotes

To clarify, I mean culture shocks you had moving here that aren’t as obvious or broad as: “oh, it’s so cold here” or “they drink a lot” or “they really like cheese” or “it’s not very diverse/there are so many white people.”

For example, I’m from here…so I’m aware of the impressive size of the Woodman’s cheese/dairy aisles and it’s not uncommon for people to have entire refrigerator drawers dedicated to storing dozens and dozens of different varieties and shapes of cheese. But I’ll always remember seeing a cute girl whip out a big block of cheese in College Library and start cutting off slices for a study snack.

Also, when you’re a Wisconsinite, you’re accustomed to the German/Scandinavian influence…but I was in the Best Western lobby once and I remember a lady looking around and saying, almost in disbelief, “Everyone is so *Nordic-looking* here!”

Social 1st yr PhD student meetup

Upvotes

Hi everyone! My partner and I are both 1st year PhD students. We are excited to meet up with other 1st year PhD students. 🥹

We are thinking of hosting monthly gathering (~10 ppl), where we can share what we have learnt (yes, we are allowed to be nerds) and how we are growing in different PhD programs. Every month can have a potluck theme, like wine/beer, soup, cake… The form will be flexible - let’s brainstorm together!

If you are interested, feel free to reach out to me by emailing me: zjiahe3@gmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you 🤩

Other what is the best building and room numbers to book a private study room for interviewing?

Upvotes

Which building and which study rooms specifically are best to book for an interview? Here is my criteria:

- private room with low noise but also allows you to talk freely inside of the room

- has very little echo

- has thick walls so you cannot hear the neighboring rooms or conversations from foot traffic near the room

Basically, which study rooms feel most like private bedrooms at UW Madison campus?

Academics Password expired help

Upvotes

I’ve used the same password for the past 2 years, so I’m confident I know what my password is for my.wisc.edu. But when I’m on there and click on the student center tile, it brings me to ORACLE PeopleSoft and says my password expired and I need to change it. I go to the link to change it and nothing is working for putting in my current password to reset it because it just keeps saying it is the wrong current password. Anyone else with this issue?

Our other friend (student) who bought the ticket online cancelled on us and is planning on giving their ticket to the non student. Do you think they will let him in?

Upvotes

Just submitted the form. Do I need to wait until Spring semester to change? Can my RA expedite the process? Having big issues with my roommate but just put hall environment on the form so my roommate wouldn’t get notified. Thanks.

Academics IS THIS A FATAL MISTAKE? INFO SYS 322 OR ANTHRO 105? (NO CODING EXPERIENCE)

Upvotes

Sophomore/pre-business student deciding what to take this semester.

I can take INFO SYS 322 with ECON 102 + MATH 211, take INFO SYS 352, or take ANTHRO 105 instead. I’m trying to keep this semester lighter so I have more time for orgs, case competitions, and my biz projects.

The only 322 professor that works for me is Yash Babar, and MadGrades shows ~46% A's. I’ve never coded before.

For 322: Is SQL taught from the ground up? How much self-study is needed? Is it actually manageable, or does it become difficult/time-consuming later? How does the workload compare with 352 and easier classes?

What would you take: 322, 352, or ANTHRO 105?

Future Badger pre vet questions

Upvotes

hi! im applying to uw madison and had a question for pre vet students. what are some unique things that uw has for pre vet students. are there specific labs, internships, or clinics that give u unique opportunities. even if theyre not entirely unique, any insight into the life of a pre vet student attending uwm would be helpful.

Funny A Random Girl fist bump me?

Upvotes

I was standing in front of Ogg Hall bus stop, talking with one of my friend and notice this girl dressed in pink started looking at me and walking straight up to me and told me to fist bump with me. After she fist bump me, she started fist bumping with some other folks who originally walked with her? I was so confused about what happened. Any thoughts?

Academics Should I take INFO SYS 322 with ECON 102 + MATH 211?

Upvotes

I’m a sophomore/pre-business student trying to decide whether to take INFO SYS 322 this semester alongside ECON 102 and MATH 211. The only professor/section that works is Yash Baber, and MadGrades shows about 46% get an A.

A few questions:

  • Is coding taught from the ground up, or is prior experience expected?
  • If I’ve never coded before, is there a lot of self-study?
  • Is 322 actually difficult, or is it reasonable to take with ECON 102 + MATH 211?
  • Are there easier INFO SYS classes that could work as OTM/business electives?

My other option is to keep my current fall schedule of ECON 102 + MATH 211 + ENTOM 201 + ASIAN 100 and replace ASIAN 100 with an easy biological science course instead. I need a bio science course anyway if I don’t get into the business school and use Economics in L&S as my backup major. I’m considering ANTHRO 105 or Hearing Science.

Next semester, I’m planning ACCT IS 100 + an easy INFO SYS elective. I already need the INFO SYS classes for my OTM requirements, so I’m mainly trying to decide whether 322 is easy enough to take now or whether I should take the bio course now and save 322 for later.

Also, my DARS says I only need 49 more credits to graduate. If I end up taking only around 12 credits per semester junior/senior year, do people usually just take extra classes to reach the 120-credit requirement, or do the required courses usually fill most of that?

Basically: should I take INFO SYS 322 now, or take an easy bio class now and save 322 for later OR keep Asian100/Music 113 (1 credit)?
