When you get into watching Chinese livestreams it’s a very bizarre and saturated market. I could definitely see this being a niche she found. When I lived in China I started watching some livestreams of what I thought were animal rescues. If you start reading up about the animal livestreams it gets really dark. China is dystopian as fuck.

I won’t write out all of it, but I’ll say that one issue was essentially animal hoarding and filming cutesy videos and asking for tips to feed/take care of them and then just stuffing them into packed cages. Many die due to neglect and they just get more and the cycle repeats. The stuffs that’s worse than that you can google. There’s definitely a market for torture.

Unfortunately, that's true the world round. There're a lot of people and even if only 0.001% of the population is truly 'evil' if such an objective thing exists, that's still over 8 million 'evil' people. It doesn't really say much about the average person, just how many people there are in the world.

Then there's cultural values or relative morality to consider on top of that. The internet just makes it easier to surface these things, and enables finding niche markets.

This exact type of stream is actually fairly common on Douyin these days. I believe they're an offshoot of the walking streams where some dude (who, apparently, used to be a bit famous) and like 50 other people walk a few steps forwards and then backwards, for like 12 hours straight.

living in japan and yeah it is known. pet shops are still a thing here, as well as animal "cafes". and zoos are barely trying to make the animals comfortable.
