To think that probably around the time you posted this gif I was literally watching THAT scene. Been binging BB as I clean and stopped what I was doing to watch this scene, one of the funniest of the whole series IMO.
This behaviour (tv-as-radio) is incidentally why script writers feel the need to overexplain everything that's happening on screen. We're almost back at radio plays, but with visuals.
All the non-verbal clues like emoting and blocking go out the window, because people aren't paying attention/are only half-watching and miss any subtleties, which producers are starting to cater to. To them only retention matters and if spelling everything out keeps people playing the content, so be it. Not to say anything about people watching series scene by scene on tiktok.
I kind of want the radio to come back then. Not that I'd listen to it, I'm just tired of everyone looking at their phones during even slightly complicated movies and saying they don't get it.
Seriously, I'm relistening to some of my favorites right now and they're just perfect for entertainment while doing stuff. Idk why more people don't do that instead of putting on movies they haven't seen yet.
Oh god, when you show your mate a film and they have their phone out, especially just before crucial plot points/amazing shots. I've basically lost friends over this haha
I used to listen to BBC Radio 4 and World Service quite a bit in the car, something about the voices... and the Shipping Forecast was always fun to try and decipher!
I love tv as radio! I do it alot with judge judy and old hollywood movies🥰and bb definitely works if you have watched it a few times you cab “see” the scene in your mind

That's tiktok/shorts,mobile phone obsession and deteriorating attention spans.
This behaviour is about comfort shows/films. This has been around a lot longer. Favourite show that absolutely could have had nuance and were so good they became favourites. Shows to go to sleep to, to watch when doing something else, to watch when tired.
They've been around a lot longer and served this purpose far longer than the laziness that is the overexplanation.
I'm old and have had comfort shows for over 30 years.
It's also part of the reason for re-runs/repeats, especially late at night.

BB definitely wasn’t written for TikTokaholics, I get that some shows these days are but there’s a huge difference between being glued to your phone while some new show is playing in the background, and what I’m doing - BB while I deep-clean my house (Mom’s visiting for the first time, wanna impress her!) Even though I’ve already binged the series at least 5 times Netflix has been like “hey, we think you’ll love this show” so instead of playing music, I put on a show I probably already know all the details of. I like shows running instead of music because as someone else said, you can kinda see it in your head, plus it gives me an excuse to sit down and take a break - OH gotta catch this scene! If only I had a second house to deep-clean - Six Feet Under would probably be next.
Damn. I am really guilty of doing this too. As much as I like to sit and actively watch tv I also love putting on junk that almost narrates whats happening while doing house work
Step one for me: having ADHD lol but seriously, when I take my meds, I clean more efficiently when I’m half-listening to a show I’ve seen before. Then, I can mentally tune it in and out, stop and watch a short scene, and keep going with my productivity.
The major rule is never sitting down. All executive function halts when I sit down.
3 days late to the thread but you just gave me a light bulb moment. It's 6 AM, and still have shit to do before bed. I fucked up and sat down at my desk "for a minute". 247 minutes later... you have a point.
Haha - Step 1: watch the entire series at least 5 times. Step 2: let the show run as you clean (because music would be too easy). Step 3: run into the room whenever you hear a good part coming up - rewind a bit as needed.
Aw thanks! And to add, Step 3: running into the room gives an excuse to take a break from cleaning - ope, can’t miss this scene! Music’s great and all but a show where you already know there’s at least one good scene every episode gives you an excuse to take a break. I keep my water bottle on the coffee table facing the TV so I can sit, hydrate, and re-focus. You gotta try it!
Haven't got a tv but I never need an excuse to take a break. Go make myself a pot of joe and get the treat I give myself after cleaning all prepared on the kitchen counter. Once I can smell the percolator aroma wafting through the flat, I know I gotta hurry up and finish cleaning or the coffee might burn.
Smells fantastic and makes cleaning faster, too. :)
Coffee’s a great reward! I’ll definitely use that tomorrow, I’ve got “one” last room to clean and it’s the most daunting - primary bedroom/bathroom/closet. Well, that, and pressure-washing the entire exterior of our 2-story house!
For a month now we’ve been deep-cleaning, getting ready for my mom to visit for the first time since we moved out of state 8 years ago - she’s finally fighting her fear of flying and she’ll be staying with us for a week. Since Covid, we’ve kinda let things go, bit of a “hoarder” situation to be honest. Feels amazing to be getting things in order, last night my husband said “maybe after this I can have friends over for a movie or something.” Yeahhhhh NOW he gets it! (I love a clean, organized house, here’s hoping it stays that way!)
