Saw the shot of him being captured by the camera guy walking in front of him. I thought he was just processing not winning possibly his last world cup game, I didn't realize he was looking at his teammates make complete fools of themselves.
Argentina is designed around him to accommodate the fact he doesn’t run.
The narrative is that Messi dragged Argentina through to the final, it’s ridiculous and false. The truth is that they sacrificed a lot to allow Messi to play to his strengths.
For any other team they simply wouldn’t build their entire strategy around him, it’s just not worth it.
There are stats available to show how much each player runs. The narrative he doesn't run much is way over blown.
Also, they just got to the finals, "simply not worth it", what? He would start on any world cup team still aside from maybe France. You're telling me they replace Messi this world cup and they still get to the finals and they beat Spain? Nah.
That was absolutely expected from everyone on Argentina at that moment. He did briefly cover his mouth (not enough to send off) and Messi and the others knew the game was immediately over after the red card. They couldn’t even get a shot w 11 men, never was gonna happen 10v11
What he did was shithousery. But it's also something plenty of others have done, especially against him. Use the letter of the rules to find a loophole. It just shows the weakness of that particular rule in FIFA rather than Messi's own dishonour or something. Especially when it was when Argentina was dying and everyone was desperate for something
Let’s not pretend we haven’t seen Messi spit on people, grab people by their throat and even shooting a ball as hard as he could towards the opposing team’s stand.
Messi infamously spat on Duda, a Portuguese player while winning 4-1 vs Malaga. Guardiola who was Barcelona’s coach at the time went as far as calling the behaviour unacceptable and said he would be dealing with the matter himself.
Now if you know your football, you may recall what Andy Robertson (Liverpool) did to him in 2019, and it being very much tame in comparsion and the uproar. Robbo got spammed all sorts of threats to him and his family for daring to wind up Messi after that with Liverpool embarrassing Barcelona that day.
There's always been stan culture. But social media stan culture has numbed my interest in so many things. Hopefully somehow in football it never gets as bad as Ronaldo vs Messi stans for the last 16-17 years. People's fandom and even entire personalities built on their two success.
I mean yeah, he knows refs are soft on him so he abuses it as much as he can. Same with the obvious red card fouls he's made or the hand play that he hasn't been punished for.

This is something the U.S. is good at, though. There is an implied consent when playing a sport that you're going to get hurt doing usual sports activities (e.g., tackling in football). However, when you go beyond that usual activity and intentionally inflict harm that goes outside of the parameters of the game, you can be held criminally AND civilly liable in tort.
Some level of implied consent for getting hurt would be the expectation in Europe as well.. but I think we can agree getting grabbed by the throat without cause would not be considered as covered by implied consent.
In this case, I think the Spaniards would have to „press charges“ - which will not happen - and I also do not believe the US administration would want the finals overshadowed by this, so nothing will happen..
ETA: I was traveling and on mobile so I put „press charges“ in wuotes, hoping people would understsnd what I meant - apparently not…
You can‘t „press charges“ but you can lodge a complaint with the police, which can investigate based on that, or on their own, or as indicated by the prosecutor.

The thing thats so stupid is that it wasn't close. If it was a controvercial win where they'd had an equaliser dissallowed i'd understand a little more, but they had 2 shots on target and frankly should have been at least 2:0 down by the end. Spain played completely clean the whole game and Argentina were never close to them.
Remember that this is a field of grown men getting paid multiple millions of dollars a year to play this game.
This is how they act at the end the world cup.... the pinnacle of FIFA, zero sportsman ship, zero integrity and zero respect on that field. Disgraceful.

Emi Martinez is great. One of the few bright spots in this Argentine team. He’s a shit stirrer for sure but in the funny way, not in the “I’m gonna punch this dude on the other team after the game” way.

This is the most important point in the thread. There is a responsibility that comes with being captain. Too many teams just automatically give the band to their best players. Obviously, you want your captain to be good and respected by the other players, but they also need to be level headed and a good leader.
The whole 120 was a demonstration in a lack of leadership.

He’s not just the captain; at least half the squad worship him like a god. If he had at any point told them to cut it with the shithousing they would have. Immediately after the game, Miami's players start charging at Seattle's players, starting fights. Sergio Busquets punched a kid half his age. Luis Suarez got in the face of a staffer - not even a player - and spit on him. It was chaotic and disgraceful.
He failed as a captain yes, but it's probably not an easy moment for him, as it is his last world cup game, losing in an embarassing way too. Going through hard emotions and trying to control your moronic teammates is not an easy task. Also i have never seen messi as a leader type tbh, im not even sure why he is the captain, just because of name really, as you said.
Argentina was so outclassed that even with the ref’s help and all the antics they didn’t manage one single shot on goal in 90 minutes. Spain even had a goal taken away by the ref on field, and all the replays, VAR and commentaries couldn’t find what the reason was. A third Spanish goal was offside by mere inches. Argentina was completely outmaneuvered, outplayed, outsmarted and in the end acted like a bunch of entitled, racist, teenagers.
Funny how they can get tripped, shoved over and even punched and just bounce back to their feet after the match, but the merest touch during it has them rolling about like they were shot.

Do not care for the downvotes on this one - I think Argentina are one of the scummiest national teams out there. Almost no class to a vast majority of their players and the way they play, with fans who are some of the worst out there.
