This checks out with my personal ratings. Season 2-3 are simply the best science fiction television out there, IMO.

Two and three being twice the length of six probably helped their ratings. Gave them time to develop stories and characters and not have to rush like s6.

As I understand it, part of why S6 is shorter was because of the budget that was chewed up or set aside for the large set piece battle.

I've always felt like it wasn't really worth it.

Like it was still great TV, but not as satisfying as the rest of the show.

That and it was the covid season, so some of the budget also got consumed by whatever extra difficulties that caused, like longer shoots with smaller crews. From what I recall from Ty & That Guy

Mid Season 2 into end of Season 3 is just non stop, it's so good.

Also Home being top rating, not a shocker.

Same.

The show has its weak points, and even the occasional series of episodes that are substantially weaker than others, but having just rewatched the series, just about the entire plotline in S4 involving Avasarala is incredibly weak. Arjun's recasting is commonly pointed out, but her entire character feels Flanderized.

S5-6 are too human. I know people love Marco and they also love NG/BA but to me the entire premise is on the strange alien stuff and how it affects humanity.

Macro was just another 'series bad guy with insane plot armour', someone with ability to get out of any situation that would have killed previous characters because it wasn't his time to die .I've seen that hundreds of times on any old tv show. It's still good, as are the books but they are no S2-3 and books 7-9.

I feel like maybe people didn't have the patience for the first episodes that set up everything that's gonna happen, it's still good scifi. better than 7.5 that's for sure

I think inevitably as a show goes on the people who aren't so interested will drop out and you're left with an audience that will be more likely to rate episodes higher.

I've been on this subreddit for a long time and it's a nearly universal experience that most of the fans here were not too impressed by the first few episodes. There's a lot of world building and our characters are not really a crew yet. There's so much to absorb. A lot of people that are huge fans now bounce off the show at the beginning. I'm one of them.

As a big fan of the series, I also think the first episodes are a bit dry. They take a while to get going, we don't really understand the stakes, and the half of the characters introduced in the first episode die by the end of it, so we're left thinking "who should we care for, again?". And at least to me, the detective thing is quite confusing at the beginning.

A friend told me to watch The Expanse. I watched 2 or 3 and quit. Later he asked me, and said I NEED to continue. So glad I did, of course, but yeah, the first time viewing of those first few episodes were slow and boring. After finishing the series, a rewatch of those episodes and they are MUCH better now! :)

Hard Vacuum being ranked the worst episode is a fucking crime. It's one of the best episodes, with THE BEST reveal during the credits.

I’ve seen ( and heard) a lot comments that pillory Naomi’s exhausting ordeal aboard the Chetzemoka. IMO, many people’s expectation of a “badass” is someone who is always stern faced and calm under pressure (Drummer does fit this mold). They see Naomi’s tears and cries as weakness.

Naomi lets all that emotion out in her desperation to find a way to redirect the lure of her own voice so it doesn’t murder her new family, while being certain she won’t survive to know if it worked. And god damn, does Dominique Tipper deliver the goods. Space is the cruelest character in the series and Naomi shows she’s one of the true OG Belters to MacGyver a solution with a stripped and crippled ship.

Happy to see S3E8 “It Reaches Out” scored a 9. It’s probably my fav episode.

Also…the Y-axis of that graph should cover the full 0-10 range… unless the scoring system ranges from 7.5-9, lol.

On my first watch, I enjoyed ep 1 and 2 but it was a bit slow. I am a scifi space enthusiast so I can imagine other people may find them a bit of a drag. By the end of episode 3 though? Fully hooked and it did not let go.

There's a lot of exposition, it's hard to take it all in on a first watch.

It took me 2 or 3 attempts of getting into this show before it finally clicked.

I almost gave up on the show for season 1, it just felt like it dragged for no reason. Then you get to the last 3 episodes that explains everything that happened in the episodes prior to those last 3. It gets complex, when you have to remember Julie Mao, Lionel Polanski, the Socpuli, and the Anubus. The last 3 episodes explain why they're all linked. I had to rewatch season 1 after watching those last 3.

I feel like S3E7 should be rated higher just for Maneo activating the ring. The scene was so well done, and you spend so much time wondering WTF this kid is doing out there.

Even in the books it's a heart-stopper of a scene, and they put it together so well on screen.

Seriously, my jaw was on the floor during that scene. Also the part where he pushes the throttle and slingshots around Saturn while the highway belter song was playing is one of the sickest things I have ever seen.

Seems generally reasonable but I’m honestly surprised 2x12 isn’t higher. Season 3 is my favorite season by far but I think that might be my favorite episode of the entire series.

Errinwright making you think he might off himself and then making his move instead, the “52 people” scene on Ganymede, “this is the warship Rocinante” and the ensuing reveal of the hybrid catching a ride on the ship. Just an incredible episode from beginning to end.

I can understand that, but there's some truly amazing stuff in that season that keeps it afloat. Some of Amo's best moments, and Naomi with the suicidal colonist is one of the better speeches in the series.

Books 2 and 3 are also kind of the best ones. Though the back end trio are really good as well. 5 was a slog for me. 4 i like a lot more than the seeming consensus.

I liked that one. I mean, it wasn't pleasant because it was a whole hour of Naomi suffering unimaginably, but I liked that it made me suffer as well.

I remember Ty Frank getting really upset about people not liking that episode in particular. I don't dislike it as much as others but it makes sense why people reacted so negatively. It's an entire episode of one person banging on pipes and repeating the same phrase over and over endlessly.
