Fyi, this is a less successful 7six7, not the famous Le Mans winning 7eight7 B. It's still a piece of automotive history, but not the one most people think of when they see the orange and green livery.

Also, the car survived, it will obviously need repairs, but is otherwise more or less fine.

u/Cowhide12 29d ago

Was gonna say, unless the frame melts they’re rebuilding it

u/bobspuds 29d ago

Hopefully it was extinguished before it got too hot.

I'm no expert but I suspect its made of some funky materials, Aluminium or Magnesium of its age wouldn't cope very well and carbon fibre is worse for it.

You know well the guys in the garage would be thinking the same, so I'd suspect they got it quickly.

Its not the golden child 787b but it is like its older sister that set the groundwork, it was the crazy Mazda that people thought was nuts, before the 787b proved just how nuts they could be

u/Cowhide12 29d ago

Oh absolutely. The 767 is still an awesome car though!

u/Joyst1q 28d ago

How many other mazdas have gone up? I only recently found out about the furai, is this a common thing with mazda hypercars???

u/bobspuds 28d ago

Ah... erm.... hmmm??

I wouldn't like to jump to conclusions or anything, but I'd suspect if anything it would be rotary related, and even at that, when producing awesome power they are an excessively high performance engine, its not normal fuel, they produce crazy heat and require fuel and oil systems unlike a typical road car.

Rotarys are cool, but once you step into the 3rotor, and quad rotors- they are hardcore race engines.

I'd have a bit more faith in this old girl though- the Furai was a new car with new parts - this old slags been beating bushes and minceng tyres for decades now.

u/ponyboy3 28d ago

Hypercar going to hypercar

u/XchrisZ 28d ago

For under 2 million I'm sure mazadar would rebuild the entire car from scratch and make a new vin plate.

Korg: [Asgard is now in ruins] The damage is not too bad. As long as the foundations are still strong, we can rebuild this place. It will become a haven for all peoples and aliens of the universe.
[Asgard explodes]
Korg: Oof. Now those foundations are gone. Sorry.

Or the even more legendary 626

u/IllMoney69 28d ago

The one with the centre air vents that swing side to side?

u/obalovatyk 28d ago

The 787B has such an amazing sound.

u/ramillerf1 28d ago

The #203 Mazda 767 won the GTP Class at Le Mans in 1990. So that smaller rotary was a successful car.

u/ForsakenSun6004 28d ago

Thank you, I was confused for a second. 787b sounds amazing.

u/xdr01 29d ago

Sad, rare legendary car.

u/AtheistKiwi 29d ago

Do they know what actually happened yet?

u/7fingersDeep 29d ago

It caught on fire.

u/AtheistKiwi 29d ago

Oh dear, that probably won't end well...

u/jewrassic_park-1940 29d ago

The fire is fine, its the car thats fucked up

u/thekrone 29d ago

Unfortunately, the fire didn't make it either :(

u/jewrassic_park-1940 29d ago

Well, at least it died doing what it loved.

u/thekrone 29d ago

Being mowed down in a hail of bullets during a botched robbery?

u/moslof_flosom 29d ago edited 28d ago

No, Living. Breathing. Being a total dick to his roommates.

u/UndercoverFBIAgent9 29d ago

The front burned off

u/mangamaster03 29d ago

Yeah, that's not very typical, I'd like to make that point.

u/bchurcho 28d ago

Well how’s that untypical?

u/dsdvbguutres 29d ago

Oh wow. Does anyone know how much it was worth?

u/the_humeister 29d ago

At least $3.50

u/SinkHoleDeMayo 26d ago

Is that typical?

u/Good_Air_7192 27d ago

Apex seals /s

u/miatagaming 29d ago

The remaining 2 just got more expensive

u/gandablond 29d ago

Mazda might need to do a recall now.

u/sabotthehawk 29d ago

Right! Over 30% chance the burst into flames! Higher chance than a pinto! Lol

u/Zeraora807 29d ago

tried to go the way of the furai

u/Kurnelk1 29d ago

I feel like I know that car well from Gran Tourismo.

u/Im_still_a_student 29d ago edited 29d ago

Thats probably the 787B you're thinking of, the 767 (in the photo) is it's less successful predecessor

u/Splatpope 29d ago

damn yeah, I was like "wait isn't it supposed to be RENOWN in the center of the hood ?"

u/ramillerf1 28d ago

The #203 Mazda 767 won its class (GTP) at Le Mans in 1990. This was a year before the 787 won overall.

u/Tinyzooseven 29d ago

Reminds me of the furai

u/Styrlok 29d ago

Furai was based on the same platform...

u/Multipla_Orgasms 29d ago

Furai was built on a mid-2000s Courage LMP2 chassis

u/Personal-Fuel4166 29d ago

Idk who told you that, but that is completely false

u/Styrlok 29d ago

I was wrong, yeah. The other commenter already corrected me.

u/Dunesday_JK 29d ago

And ended on the same note

u/notcomplainingmuch 29d ago

What a wankel!

u/dmethvin 28d ago

What goes around comes around

Coolest sounding engine if all time.

In Japan they have a name for 787B engine note: tenshi no zekkyō, which translates to "Scream of an angel."

Edit: this is a 767, I saw the livery and immediately assumed it was a 787B.

u/OldieButNotMoldy 29d ago

That tiny fire extinguisher is a joke.

u/evileagle 28d ago

The guys are idiots. This is a private collector's car, and his own "crew" running it. They tried pumping it when it was still race hot, without a fire bottle near, with no supervision, and then when it started they didn't pull the kill switch so it kept pumping gas, and then had no extinguishers in their bay, and nobody trained on how to use them!

u/clumaho 29d ago

$2 million dollar car, $20 fire extinguisher.

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 27d ago

Some Harbor Freight shit.

u/MichaelW24 29d ago

Theres a 0% chance this doesn't have a on-board fire suppression system, however most of them in race cars are manual operation.

Meant for life safety in the event you're trapped in the car and can't get out. Because suffocating from halon is still better than burning to death

u/teh_herper 29d ago

RIP

u/ProJoe 28d ago

it's not dead.

this is a heritage car. Mazda will rebuild it.

u/teh_herper 28d ago

Hey at least its a rotary it'll be easy to rebuild amirite lol

u/evileagle 28d ago

Private collection car, which means it wasn't Mazda's techs on it running it.

These idiots pumped the tank right after a run while it was still hot, had no fire bottle near the car while pumping, and had no kill switch for the pump. Then had no extinguishers close, and then NONE of them were properly trained on how to use one in a motorsport context.

Rich guy nonsense as usual.

u/Rzeszow2083 29d ago

Car-B-Que.

u/dangledingle 29d ago

The sound that thing made was something else.

u/KatieTSO 29d ago

So the others are now 1 of 2?

u/on_spikes 29d ago

you mean the 2 of 2 $3 million car

u/TedMich23 28d ago

On the bright side it will burn less oil tomorrow...

u/Ourcade_Ink 28d ago

So how much did the other two increase in value overnight?

u/Nii_Juu_Ichi 28d ago

If I had a nickel for every rotary-engined, 1 of <10 in the world, Mazda car worth millions, I'd have two. Which is weird because it happened twice.

Not to vaguepost, it's about the Mazda Furai

u/IgDailystapler 27d ago

Can extremely limited production rotary Mazda’s please stop catching on fire?

It hasn’t happened a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice…

u/jsmith_92 27d ago

Car is fire bro

u/Waterfish3333 29d ago edited 29d ago

Grab Turismo 3 flashbacks

Edit: First, autocorrect strikes but I leave the typo. Second, I know it’s not the “exact” same car as GT3 but it’s close enough to bring back good memories of playing the game.

u/eugene-fraxby 29d ago

I lived that Carr in Gram Turisno.

u/santz007 29d ago

Don't worry guys, last Pic showed that it was fully working and in perfect condition.

u/russki516 29d ago

Just saw a video of that one firing up. Shame.

u/pukesonyourshoes 29d ago

What do you mean, there's several photos of it firing up right at the top of this post.

u/russki516 28d ago

I wasnt making a joke, actually, lol

The day before i had seen a short clip of engine start up on facebook

u/Cowhide12 29d ago

NOOO

u/NitemareFlareside 29d ago

Really sad to hear, lucky enough to see it person early this year, hope they car repair it and get back on the track soon

u/taco_in_the_shell 28d ago

Noooooo, my favorite car in Gran Turismo.

u/smakusdod 28d ago

They must have turned it on.

u/philharmanic 28d ago

Duh, it burned already while driving it!

u/IllMoney69 28d ago

I was worried until I saw that last image and everything was fine.

u/drivalowrida 27d ago

It's a hot wheels car

u/artifexor 27d ago

So next news is '1 of 2 Rotary-Engined Mazda 767...'.

u/Severe-Associate-455 8d ago

It's just a Mazda,so not a big loss

u/Razgriz765 29d ago

She got FURAI'd as in FRIED :<

u/ionlysurfontoilet 29d ago

There's a video of it going round the track with smoke coming out of it from something

u/Breaking_My_Shell 29d ago

All that money for a car and he has a little baby dick fire extinguisher

u/jojohohanon 29d ago

It was already on fire when it was driving in the 5th pic!

u/ramillerf1 28d ago

Not the same car. Also, the Mazda always spits flame when the driver lifts.

u/jojohohanon 28d ago

Yes. I was joking about the overrun.

u/No_Collection7360 29d ago

Now it's none of two.

u/leepyws1961 29d ago

What goes around...

u/No-Test2784 28d ago

Video would have been much more satisfying.

"Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

u/ramillerf1 28d ago

u/No-Test2784 28d ago

Fucking amazing... thanks. now I feel better👍😆

u/Boundish91 29d ago

Dude with the fire extinguisher is standing way too far away.

u/5mackmyPitchup 29d ago

Yeah, he's not crispy enough fr

u/ralo90 29d ago

It's probably electric. /s
