Can someone please recommend laptop till 50k which are actually worth buying ?

I'm entering my first year of engineering and am thinking of getting a new laptop. Im wondering what the best ones under £1000 are, or if it's even worth going above £1000, though I'd rather not. Is it possible to get by without an expensive laptop for my course, and if so, does anyone have recommendations?

I'm mainly going to use the laptop for university work and light gaming (if possible). The university suggests a minimum of atleast 16 Gb ram and 512 SSD for all students, but I would like one that could better run all the necessary applications an engineering student would need.

The best one I could find myself was an Asus A14 with a ryzen ai 7 processor. I'm not great at identifying good computers by any means but learnt a bit of what the different parts could entail.

My dad's 6 year old dell laptop is on the out - I'm surprised it lasted this long but he essentially needs a new one for work and all he really uses today is word/excel/outlook/browser(youtube) and have a bunch of no doubt govt spyware/firewall shit running in the background that sucks as much ram as it can. We used to play halo CE together and for whatever reason he liked to watch me play diablo 3. For reference, this is my PC, it's the first I ever built after months of research and I wanted to do a build for him but he is 100% adamant against a tower and it's a battle I know isn't worth fighting (mom's rules).

I know there's a bunch of easy zenbook recommendations etc. that can be given but I want him to have more. He's entrusted me with his next laptop purchase "for work" with a budget of around $800 - I think there's a reasonable world where I can get him something decently powerful that can play older games (he's in his 60s, he's not playing the latest call of duty) but first and foremost will help him work with super low load times and just enjoy what a decently powerful computer can bring.

My thought is he gave me a ~$800 budget, I'll buy it and he can pay whatever up to that amount. Ideally I keep it <$1200 and not bulky/heavy. Not something marketed to gamers but with specs people like us can respect. I do need longevity in mind and if it can get my dad another 5-7 years that would be great.

I know I'm asking for a lot all in one package, I'm willing to take some tradeoffs and would just like to see some real options. Thank you!

I don’t have a preference for any particular OS. I have an iPhone and iPad, I use a Pixel phone, Chromebook, and MacBook for my day job. I’ve messed around with Linux on my Steamdeck. So I’m not fixed on a specific OS.

I do want the screen to be OLED, they just look nicer and if I’m going to make an investment in a device I want it to look good. Also, I want it to feel good, I love the aluminum feel for some of these.

The one thing I’ve been seeing a lot is software bloat on windows laptops, making them run slow or unusable in a couple years.

I have had a macbook for about 6 years, and the simplicity is great. I only really use it to store music and photos, and the occasional banking and paperwork type of things. I dont use it for school or gaming. Screen size and battery life are not huge concerns. I'd like something with a cd player (most ideal but I can manage without) and a usb port. This isnt an urgent need, but I'm slowly replacing the electronics I use with more sustainable options. Bonus points for smaller companies.

Looking in the US but no strong feelings about it coming from elsewhere, willing to spend around $800 USD but can be flexible for the right option. Also open to refurbished or used goods.

Like 75% of my job relies on microscope image analysis. I take the images elsewhere, but I need to open multiple of them at once. The program I use for this is notoriously hungry for RAM, so adequate RAM is essential as is a good display. I've been recommended to get a laptop with a decent GPU for what I do as well. I'd like something thats pretty lightweight since I walk to and from the Uni. It might be a big ask but something under 2k CAD is most feasible for my budget right now. I'm willing to pay more for something that can hold up, but only if it actually really can hold up.

Im currently between tbe HP Omnibook ultra, Dell 16S and HP omen transcend. I have had terrible experiences with Lenovos, so I will be staying away from them. I have had good experiences with Dell and have never owned an HP. I like the Omen transcend but have some concerns with noise and battery life. I also wonder if a gaming laptop will be "overkill" with the games I play. Though I worry the Dell 16S and Omnibook would struggle to run them. I am open to other suggestions though.

I need it for uni, priority is battery life and I'd also like for it to be able to run some games (mostly Paradox Interactive titles like CK2, HOI4 and Stellaris). I don't particularly care about the display, speaker or even webcam quality.
