Postpartum psychosis can have ongoing impact, iirc it does in up to half of cases. That seems like it may have been the case here, from the suggestion Clancy has bipolar - it can effectively act as a trigger for it.

But the alternative is also possible. Which is exactly why the plea is generally unsuccessful.

The insanity plea doesn't depend on ongoing mental illness, but the point at which the killings took place.

That's incorrect, it's when doctors and courts determine that your sanity is restored. That doesn't even make sense. Just absolute nonsense.

If that's your position then you must agree that she deserves to be in jail rather than taking away needed mental health resources.

What do you mean? Someone's mental illness could already be controlled by the time of a court case, and their functioning could be good. That doesn't mean them having been suffering from a mental illness at the time of having committed a killing, can't be taken into account in determining their responsibility for that killing any more.

Confinement to a hospital is not supposed to be a required punishment. It's not a punishment at all.
