Question How can we interpret Waheguru to be personal (in sense of caring our personal needs) when Gurbani says otherwise?

Upvotes

ਗਉੜੀਮਹਲਾ੫॥

Gauree, Fifth Mehla:

ਮੀਤੁਕਰੈਸੋਈਹਮਮਾਨਾ॥

Whatever my Friend does, I accept.

ਮੀਤਕੇਕਰਤਬਕੁਸਲਸਮਾਨਾ॥੧॥

My Friend's actions are pleasing to me. ||1||

ਏਕਾਟੇਕਮੇਰੈਮਨਿਚੀਤ॥

Within my conscious mind, the One Lord is my only Support.

ਜਿਸੁਕਿਛੁਕਰਣਾਸੁਹਮਰਾਮੀਤ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥

One who does this is my Friend. ||1||Pause||

ਮੀਤੁਹਮਾਰਾਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ॥

My Friend is Carefree.

ਗੁਰਕਿਰਪਾਤੇਮੋਹਿਅਸਨਾਹਾ॥੨॥

By Guru's Grace, I give my love to Him. ||2||

ਮੀਤੁਹਮਾਰਾਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ॥

My Friend is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਸਮਰਥਪੁਰਖੁਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਸੁਆਮੀ॥੩॥

He is the All-powerful Being, the Supreme Lord and Master. ||3||

ਹਮਦਾਸੇਤੁਮਠਾਕੁਰਮੇਰੇ॥

I am Your servant; You are my Lord and Master.

ਮਾਨੁਮਹਤੁਨਾਨਕਪ੍ਰਭੁਤੇਰੇ॥੪॥੪੦॥੧੦੯॥

Nanak: my honor and glory are Yours, God. ||4||40||109||

In the entire Shabad, there is a deference and trust in Waheguru, but no claim that what I want is what will occur.

Not sure if my words are right (ie personal). But my point is that there is a recognition that Waheguru is carefree and acceptance of whatever Waheguru does.

Not only is this a reasonable thing that can be understood and logical thing that makes sense as one understands the world. Seems like so much of Kathaa ignores this platform (interacting with world based on reality) when discussing nature of Waheguru and what Sikhi means.

Question Need help celebrating my Sikh brother

Upvotes

Got a weird one for you, friends:

One of my best friends (a brother, really) is a Punjabi man, and we are part of a re-enactment group that recreates history prior to the year 1600.

For six decades, the organization has been focused on the European middle ages, but more and more POCs have been joining and wanting to celebrate and explore our own ancestral backgrounds.

He is, to my knowledge, the only Punjabi man, recreating a Punjabi historical persona, in our entire worldwide organization.

As he is a swordfighter, who has incorporated his Gatka training into his martial practice, and he is one of the most skilled and dangerous fighters I have ever been honoured to fence against. He is also a teacher, and a leader in our community, known for his advocacy for minority groups and his work in creating a safe and protective environment for newcomers of all backgrounds.

He will soon be honoured with the title of sword-master within our group, and I am hoping to incorporate his culture in a respectful way, like we did for our Chinese brother a few months ago.

To that end, I am hoping to get help with a few things:

1) would it be problematic to have a non-Sikh initiate the bole so nihal, so that he can respond with the sat sri skal?

2) is there any problem with using examples of manuscript illumination/decoration from the SGGS as inspiration for his award scroll?

Question Best Paath for someone to get to know about sikhi?

Upvotes

Where to start from? I was a sikh from birth. But pretty much raised secular, like never really got to know anything about sikhi. Basically i was just raised with the default settings. I didn't know much about sikhism, neither about hinduism or any other religion. Rn i am an athiest/agnostic.

But recently something happened and might sound immature and maybe it's even wrong idk. My dog got very sick and the doc was saying he might have a brain tumor. So i prayed please save my dog then i will look into religion with a open heart. Atleast give it a shot. My dog didn't have a brain tumor and made a full recovery(afaik).

So now it's time to fulfill the promise.

What should i look into first to get a general idea? What paath? Where to begin?

Question Why is there messengers of death Yamdoot and Azrael if Sikhi doesn’t believe in Heaven and Hell

Upvotes

If Gurbani explains to us heaven and hell are states of mind, for example doing Naam and reciting bani can keep you in a state of heaven and being unable to conquer your 5 thrives can lead you to state of hell.

i keep getting questioned why are messangers of death Yamdoot and Azrael mentioned in gurbani as punishing people who did bad deeds and send them to hell

The rebels will be called to account; the angel Azrael will surround them for punishment." — SGGS, Pg. 953

One who realizes the Inner Tutor attains heaven. Azrael, the Messenger of Death, does not cast him into hell."(SGGS, Pg. 1094)

Does this mean Hellfire does exist?

Question Sikh baby girl names

Upvotes

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh 🙏🏻

We’re expecting a little Kaur soon! We will take the first letter from the Hukamnama Sahib before naming her, but I’d love to gather some ideas beforehand, as I imagine we’ll have less time to research once she arrives.

We’re looking for short, simple names from Gurbani. We love names like Ganeev Kaur, Jind Kaur and Ajooni Kaur, but little Kaurs in our extended family already have these names.

Names from Sikh history are also welcome!

Please share your suggestions and, if possible, their meanings and where they appear in Gurbani or Sikh history.

Thank you! 🙏🏻

Discussion Rant about Sikh social media pages posting fake stuff for likes/followers.

Post image
Upvotes

Everyday I'm unfortunately reminded that many (not all) Sikhs are sheep with 0 critical thinking-skills who mindlessly believe anything that happens to be related to religion. Commenting religious words without any analytical contemplation on AI-slop or fake posts, as if that will get them brownie points or something. Shameless and embarrassing. And don't you dare say anything against it! Then you are being "disrespectful" nah man. I find this slop and manipulation the real disrespect. Someone needs to do something about these anti-Sikh social-media pages posting fake stuff for like/followers. Having a Sikh username or profile-picture does not make you panthic and give you a pass to make-up fake stuff to fool others.

So let’s breakdown this specific claim: This is a an “ORIGINAL picture” of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj from Nankana Sahib.

Hmmm, then why does it resemble the common-perception of what he looked like so much? No doubt formed partly from popular 20th century painters, like Sobha Singh and Kirpal Singh? Isn’t that a little bit convenient.

Okay, let’s put this stylistic choices aside and talk about scientific facts. Photography was invented in the 1820s, so which one of you invented a time-machine and went back in time to the 16th century to snap a quick photograph of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji with your Canon PowerShot camera?

Oh! Now you’re claiming it’s a realism painting and not a photograph, okay then explain why it’s not a miniature painting considering that realism oil paintings were first introduced to the Panjab during the mid-19th century?

No answers. Yeah, so we are to conclude that this is a fake image and post, made to deceive Sikhs and garner likes/followers on social-media from the less-discerning ones in our community.

Just wanted to say something against this because literally nobody else is despite how rampant this is. This is just one example but I’ve seen numerous others from this past week alone. Just a little PSA to not trust everything you see online, especially in the age of AI.

*For context, Kavi Sainapati was one of Guru Gobind Singh's 52 court poets and Sri Gur Sobha is an authentic contemporary account of the early khalsa, recognised by various scholars.

Question Guru Nanak’s travels - whats verified?

Upvotes

Ive heard it said he got as far as Iraq which is certainly plausible, given the trade routes at the time. And i have heard theres some kind of monument there to show his arrival

Ive also heard a story of him at Mecca where he proves that God has no direction to an onlooker. Thats also believable to me, but it is further than Iraq

But ive seen people here say he went to the Vatican?? Is this true

Question Our Guru’s Behaviours

Upvotes

SSA everyone. Growing up my mom always told me stories about our gurus and their bravery. Pretty much every story there is to be told about their bravery and sacrifices I have heard it from my mom or from Punjabi classes.

However I have noticed there’s no stories about our gurus joking or having fun. It almost seems like they were serious 24/7. How did they live their lives other than just being a guru ? Did they ever joke around or were they pretty much like how they were portrayed in stories ?

Thank you. SSA

My hairs a pretty long, the way i place them is by putting them around my head

Question Why is getting acceptance as a gay/bi/lesbian so difficult in our community?

Upvotes

We live in a judgmental society and because of same upbringing I'm not comfortable at all with my own self and I can't date because it feels so wrong! Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out the fun. Is there any way I can find a way out? By that I mean the judgement of people and not the religion itself. Don't wanna offend anyone!

Question What was Guru Angad dev Ji's first shabad

Upvotes

When I was younger I used to hear a sakhi of Guru Angad Dev jis first shabad they wrote after Baba Budha Ji had found them after Guru Nanak Dev Ji's joti jot. Since Guru Angad Dev Ji's gurgaddi diwas is coming up, I wanted to revisit the shabad. I believe the shabad was along the lines of there isn't any point of life without the guru, but I could be wrong on that.

I would really appreciate it if someone can tell the shabad.
