Just a mini yap post by me as a (nearly finished) DevOps apprentice engineer. Sorry if I misappropriate your microcosm of daily function by being an all-aspiring ^\w Engineer$ (this is the way).

Before you ask, No this is not an AI bot speaking. I am genuinely real (just read the essay) - All jokes are original and help me cope (even the devops worm, so cute and tiny) - If i was a bot, what even is the end goal of this post, Convince you in favour of devops? Hell No, I dont even know what im doing here, This is the most right and wrong place at the same time for my inevitable mental breakdown. Anyway dont want to ruin your attention span - onto the presentation.

Anyway, r/ShittySysadmin —I’m on three cans of Monster (how caffeine is not classified as a scheduled narcotic still baffles me), speed-writing last-minute apprenticeship documentation (go you, girl!), and blasting Nine Inch Nails in an empty office. I figured this is the best place to burn off the energy of two impending heart attacks and ignore the daunting, lifelong misery of the IT field.

Who knows, though? Maybe my imaginary DevOps role might make it more interesting for me. At this point in time, I’m genuinely not sure if taking this job was the right move or a catastrophic error in judgment.

Tech has always been interesting to me. If you know anything about me (or are a professional stalker, and I am somehow interesting enough to be your professional victim), you are aware I foolishly took this role thinking the flexibility of the "DevOps mindset" was enough to set me free from the narrow, rigid bounds of Infrastructure Engineer, Software Engineer, Tester, or Solution Architect as isolated silos.

None of you know me, which is wonderful. Here is my relevant life story: two years ago, I was mentored by decade-experienced sysadmins who actually wanted to see change in their fields. They told me I should become an evangelist—someone who takes charge and starts the conversations to get the DevOps worm burrowing into everyone's brain. (I also operate a painfully expensive homelab)

Okay, now you know so much about me it’s a risk to my safety. You can tell I’m not entirely serious. Maybe I was built for blog writing, where posts get revised a million times instead of just instantly publishing the first draft. (Stop reading, ping RemindMeBot, and check the inevitable update after I am flooded with messages telling me "you're wrong here," "you are out of your mind," "stop talking," and such.)

Right—now to the point, which has taken me exactly 1,737 characters to get to. I’m not so unhappy in my role that I want to permanently deform my face with a desk sander, but I also don't want to run away from it, start a new life in the woods, and forage for berries. Turns out, as an ^\w Engineer$...

—get it? It's regex. If you don't know what DevOps actually is, well... maybe I should explain that.

Alright, I should probably define what "DevOps" actually means to me. I did mention a brain-worm earlier. Here it is, so tiny and cute -> ..--...--...*

DevOps is a conglomeration of multiple roles. You could probably blow a project manager's mind by throwing them into a regex like ^\w Engineer. Regardless, the entire field of DevOps—well, it’s not even a field. Get a hundred people into a field who know what DevOps is and try to apply it to their work (like a solutions architect taking a crack at coding), and there you have the "field" of DevOps.

Okay, jokes aside (they aren't), DevOps is not a field you can tangibly assign a job title to. It’s a stretch to even call it a job function. It’s like autism; technically speaking, it has features that are ideal and have formed up from years of incorrect thinking in the sysadmin, infrastructure, and programming fields since their inception. DevOps is supposed to be a lingering mindset. Think of a loitering munition that obliterates anything anti-status-quo-agile. (I take zero legal responsibility for the obliteration of archaic project managers).

Think of it this way: DevOps is a mindset hellbent on amalgamating the responsibilities and knowledge of a dozen distinct roles. It’s the be-all and end-all of any ^\w Engineer$. Think about it for a moment. Continue thinking. This sounds suspiciously like a 10x startup engineer trying to keep a ship from sinking—except the ship has no bottom and the founders are actively drilling speed-holes in the hull. And yeah, if you read it to the letter, DevOps really requires some exceptional voodoo to properly emit. Maybe this is why the evangelical route is easier: all you have to remember is praise DevOps, praise DevOps, praise DevOps...

The cycle of evangelism is exhausting. So many people have "DevOps" plastered all over their LinkedIn, yet how many actually can write a post like this? Hell, I haven't even got much professional experience. Just two years. I actually have more experience at home doing personal projects, coding, and cloud infrastructure than I did at work!

Fine, I’ve learned how to talk to the C-suite without sounding like an insufferable snob. I’ve learned how to navigate office diplomacy. Those are good skills to have (+w for apprenticeships). I don't think, however, that the actual word "DevOps" in my job title holds any real weight. If anything, when I apply to other companies, what are they going to think? God forbid they find this post! (I would be toast). Or worse, they find my actual blog...

Regardless of the circumstances of my deeply unprofessional choice of profession, I’m standing at a crossroads. The fourth Monster is cracking open, the NIN track has looped back to Closer, and my documentation is still staring at me like an unpatched production server on a Friday afternoon.

Day 15: "WHY CAN'T I LOG IN?!"

Apparently the 14-day grace period was interpreted as a 14-day waiting period before reading the instructions.

Obviously this was IT's fault.

As the person responsible for security, I naturally concluded that the correct technical solution was a T-shirt.

Path mods keep deleting the post, probably the very ones defending the culprit in the video.

So, i does it mean that i will need to reboot my server? Last 10 years it’s runing without any issues.

I mean they're a bunch of different usernames, all with the same flair tag, all just spamming the board with new posts which complain about people who don't know wtf the board's about when they post or comment. Pretty clearly deliberate spam from one guy using multiple accounts. Why is it being tolerated?

Why doesn't anybody complain about the guy who posts a real-world IP Address (tracing back to a VPS host in Germany) on every boilerplate-inspired post? I'm pretty sure that violates Rule #2 even though the credentials he presents for that system are most likely bogus (I haven't tried them). His jokes don't even track half the time.

I subscribe to this sub because it usually amuses the Hell right out of me. That is all the Hell the end-users inspire when they call me up at 8pm with a question about "the new Edge" and then refuse to discuss it further until business hours the next day, just leaving me thinking they have some kind of malware that introduced an imitation browser into the mix, only to get to work the next day and find out the EU is asking me about the link to the product name "The New Edge" which they found on some website they use every day on the job.

I am not at all amused by seeing the same post day after day for the last three in a row, whether they come from the same user or different accounts run by the same spammer. Should I just mute the sub or are the mods going to get to work on the spammers?
