Mod Post Community Guidelines & Advisory System

Upvotes

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.

In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.

We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.

These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.

If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.

If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail

EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

Thankfully he was in the other side of my mosquito netting so I didn’t have to disturb his meal to relocate. Fun to watch him do his thing!

Help! Found a Costa Rican Elegant Bark Scorpion in my luggage

Upvotes

We just started unpacking in Long Island and came across this guy. Earlier in our trip, about a week ago, we found one crawling above our bed (that’s the one in second photo). It was about 5 inches with the tail curled, I caught and tossed it outside. Then a few days later, my wife was stung by something while rummaging our luggage. He looks like the same one, possibly made it back into our room and has been hitching a ride since.

I’ve got him in a jar now and provided water and a cricket. Not sure what to do next. If i find somewhere to drop him off in LI or NYC, we’ll do so, or we’ll dispatch humanely. We live in Texas, are at our family’s home, and he will not be driving back with us.

Her previous owner said he thinks she's a girl. I don't know much about scorpions yet and would love to know, if my girl Elke actually is a girl 🦂

Help! What kind of sand or substrate is suitable for Parabuthus transvaalicus?

At first, I was using the silica sand in the first picture, but it looks a bit too coarse. Would it be better to switch to the Exo Terra sand in the second picture? And would you recommend mixing it with clay or coco peat?

Help! Emperor scorpion set up

She’s in a 30gal with 8 inches of substrate. I really love the look of planted enclosures (I have frogs galore) but is it safe? Ik that the like to destroy and uproot plants, which I don’t mind fixing at all, I just want to make sure that the plants aren’t gonna cause any issues. I was thinking of maybe gluing some to the hides and glass that way they don’t fall in, but idk if that’s a solution or a bigger problem 😭
She has plenty of burrowing room, and the substrate is a mix of coconut fiber, soil, and ex sand so it doesn’t collapse in. Plants are pothos, Juanita , and dragons grass, I checked and made sure that they’re safe. Her heating pads on the back of the glass
Is there stuff I should add or take out, she’s my first scorpion and I’ve always been a reptile guy and I just want to make sure I’m doing her right.

Help! Preparing for a scorpion!

I wanted the mighty Reddits opinion on my Asian forest scorpion tank, still missing a few things, water dish with stones in it to avoid drowning and some more hides, heat mat on the wall, anything else I’m missing? It’s a 10 gal, does it look ok so far? Any tips would be great I’m really excited for a scorpion, I can add more pics if those aren’t exactly clear

Note that I won’t be getting the scorpion until I have it completed and safe for my new baby, first time scorpion owner

Hi everyone! I’m not an expert by any means, but I’d love to learn more about this scorpion. I was walking my dog near my house and came across it. It was at night, so I know the pictures aren’t the best. If anyone knows what type of scorpion this is or has any information about it, I’d love to learn more!
