Considering living in Rwanda as a non-Rwandan

Upvotes

I'm a software engineer working remotely for a US company. Recently, I started my own software business and decided to quit my job and start a new life.

I'm currently living in Ethiopia, and I hate it here. It's a mess, and I want to start a new, calm, and stable life somewhere else.

I initially considered Dubai, but I don't really want to leave Africa, so now I'm considering Kigali. I've heard that Rwanda offers residency options for investors and entrepreneurs, which could be a good fit for me.

What do you guys think? Is Kigali a good place to live and run a software business as a foreigner?

The clocks around Kigali city with incorrect time are driving me insane

Upvotes

If you work in town you have likely seen those clocks, it’s only once in a blue moon that they are correct but everywhere mu mugi wrong time, at Kimihurura wrong time, at Rebero round about wrong time. I just want to climb up there and fix them.

It then makes me go down a rabbit hole and wonder how thousands of people see this everyday and no one has done anything. Why? Then I think of technology, isn’t there a way to have cameras or have them tied to solar power so they never die. Isn’t there some form of weekly quality check? What’s happening? Maybe this is the reason people are late constantly! We don’t know the use and purpose of watch.

End of rant

Need help relocating

Upvotes

So I’m planning to relocate to musanze from kigali and since I’m a foreigner i am not familiar with modes of transport. My belongings are a bed, couch(L), table , mattress, gas, and few suit cases. I’d really appreciate if given student friendly options. Murakoze😊

Dog trainer needed

Upvotes

Hello Reddit fam,

I hope you are having a great weekend.

I have a six month old puppy. He does not poop or pee in the house at all. He is very energetic when he wakes up in the morning and at night from 7pm. I usually take him for walks on a leash three times a week and he loves it. He is very friendly and loves people but loves bite playing sometimes with his teeth, I want to correct this behavior. I am looking for a trainer to teach him some of the behavioral skills. The last trainer I had for two months claimed he was teaching him commands and some basic skills which I found out later that the puppy learnt nothing at all. I am looking for recommendations from a good dog trainer who can come to my house to train my puppy. If you know anyone reliable and trustworthy, please share the contacts and also the fees they charge per month or weekly.

Thank you.

Rwandan car culture needs to become better

Upvotes

I grew up in a huge car-loving family. All my uncles are into cars, and I grew up watching Top Gear and The Grand Tour so much that I still use them as background noise 😂.
I feel like there’s a big difference between car** *culture and luxury-car culture in Rwanda.
Whenever someone sees a G-Wagon or Range Rover, it’s automatically *“BROOO, THAT CAR IS SO NICE.”
But I feel like people sometimes appreciate the status of the car more than the car itself.
For me, car culture is being excited about a 30-year-old Japanese car that’s still running perfectly, an old car with unique designs you don’t see anymore, restoring something, building a project car, or even converting an old van into a camper and driving across East Africa.
It’s not always about how expensive or powerful the car is. It’se about the story, engineering, character and experiences behind it.
I feel like Rwanda has a luxury/status car culture, but not as much of an enthusiast car culture.
Am I wrong?

£3k budget to import lightweight goods from the UK to Rwanda — what actually sells fast and doesn’t get stuck at customs?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I've got about £3k saved up and I'm looking to start a small import side-hustle. The plan is to buy stuff in bulk in the UK, ship it over to Kigali by air, and flip it locally for a quick turnaround.

The main things I'm trying to avoid are heavy/bulky items (since air freight will eat all the capital) and anything heavily regulated that’s going to get flagged or tied up forever by the RRA.

For anyone who has experience trading or shipping between the UK and East Africa: what types of products actually move fast with a small budget like this, and what logistical headaches should I watch out for?

Open to whatever ideas you've got. Appreciate any advice!

Laptops

Upvotes

Hey,

I’ve got 15 refurbished HP EliteBook 840 G5 from the UK ( 350k each ), and I’m wondering if it’s worth importing them to Rwanda. The quality is solid and they’re properly tested ( way different from the Chinese stuff ). But I’m unsure: (1) would people actually buy them? (2) how fast would they move? I’ve got the capital but don’t want to sit on stock. Has anyone tried this or know the market?

I appreciate any information,
Thanks

I'm building a small platform connecting travelers in Rwanda with vetted local guides — would love feedback (and maybe your first booking)

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm Rwandan, based in Kigali, and I've been working on something called For-Local — basically a way for visitors to get matched with a local host/guide who can help with everything from airport pickup and itinerary planning to gorilla trek bookings, translation, and just generally showing you around like a friend would, not a tour bus.

The idea came from seeing how many visitors either overpay through big agencies or end up navigating everything alone with no local context. We handle the logistics (transport, park bookings, accommodation help, safety orientation) so you can just show up and experience the country.

We're brand new, so I'm looking for a few early travelers to work with directly — I'll personally make sure your trip is planned well, and pricing right now is very affordable since we're still building our track record.

If you (or anyone you know) is planning a Rwanda trip in the next few months, I'd genuinely love to help — and honest feedback either way would mean a lot.

Happy to answer questions about visiting Rwanda in general too, even if you don't end up using us.

Feel free to reach out for further talks.

Were our leaders always this…spineless?

Upvotes

After everything that has been happening the last few weeks, and seeing how ministers refuse to take a stance or think for themselves…it got me to thinking…were they always this cowardly? I used to look up to them now I only see spineless followers.
