ETA: I went back and got his store cage mate. Yes I now realize I should’ve just gotten them together in the first place, so don’t come for me. We’re all living and learning and I corrected my mistake. Sunset is seeming much more comfortable and they’re cuddling so much it’s adorable. He hasn’t bitten since but I also have only opened the cage door and put my knuckles right at the door and he came up and sniffed me without biting. I think he’s more confident now that he has Twilight with him.
Edit 2: So I attempted resting my hand in the cage again, and he slightly bit, but as soon as I squeaked like a rat would, he stopped biting me and now just mouths softly. Thanks to everyone who was kind and gave me good advice!
My new albino rat Sunset is in quarantine and
I’m pretty sure he is almost completely blind. This morning I gave him a lickable treat on my finger and he bit my finger. Then when I tried to give him a rat cookie treat he bit me again instead of the cookie 🤣 I think he’s just a bit scared and also blind so he mistook my finger for the food. I am now going to give him the lickable treats on a spoon. I never feed any of my rats through the bars of their cage. Neither of my other boys have ever bitten me, but they aren’t blind. I have now just been sitting by his cage and talking to him in soft tones, not reaching in except to feed him etc. When I do decide to rest my hand in the cage and let him sniff, my hands will be washed beforehand so he doesn’t smell food on them. Just wondering if any of you know of ways to help stop the biting, or do you think that’s just going to happen because he’s blind?
