Portals vs. Pathways: The Real Work After Psychedelics | Jonathan Schecter

There’s a big difference between having a psychedelic experience and actually doing something with it.

Jonathan Schecter, host of Vital Point: Pathways to Integration and founder of Pathways Integration, joins us to talk about what happens after the breakthrough. Drawing from his own experiences with psychedelics, meditation, Buddhism, breathwork, somatic practices, and integration coaching, Jonathan explores the gap between having an insight and actually changing your life.

We talk about why the biggest psychedelic experience is not necessarily the most useful one, the role of trauma and nervous system regulation, when psychedelic insights should be questioned rather than followed, and Jonathan’s distinction between “portals” and “pathways”: the dramatic experiences that can suddenly move us somewhere new versus the slower, less exciting work of learning how to live there.

Because eventually the trip ends. You go home. Your relationships, habits, job, and problems are still waiting for you. The question is whether anything actually changed.

In the extended Patreon conversation, we go further into the uncomfortable side of psychedelic integration: whether integration itself is becoming a product, whether some people would be better served by stepping away from psychedelic culture entirely, the medicalization of psychedelics, and why the obsession with heroic doses may sometimes get in the way of the work.

how often is too often?

Upvotes

ive been consuming plant medicine for nearly a decade but these past 3-5 months ive been consuming weekly sometimes multiple times a week. i usually work with ayahuasca (mimosa+rue) but i also like throwing in san pedro and shrooms into the mix every few weeks. i havent really ran into any negative effects ever or at least in the way people would assume and ive grown an intense amount these past few months. quit gaming, quit cannabis, quit doom scrolling and focusing on my career more and on the track of getting married and moving to my dream city with my brother. i feel like everything in my life has gotten so much better since ive been drinking aya so frequently, i also am able to integrate my sessions fairly quickly. i dont take "breakthrough" doses all the time most my aya sessions sit around the intensity of 2.5g-3.5g of shrooms, i know drinking aya 2-3 times a week is def not what everyone should do but i feel like for me its done nothing but improve my life for the better. another thing ill like to say, ive noticed where ever i look thats talking about ayahuasca will say its "not recreational" i wouldnt say i consume it to have "fun" but most my experiences def have recreational value to it, idk if im just weird or ive grown fond of the fact ayahuasca tears apart your understandings but the experience overall feels like mushrooms but way more reality shattering.

why don't mushrooms do the same thing anymore?

Upvotes

My first few doses of shrooms were pretty intense, even at lower doses than what I can do now, It made me do a lot of reflection and was more of an intense experience overall, and I also, particularly one trip saw smoke in the corners of my eyes and looking at my computer, I could see multiple mouse's and my pages I could see more lines than there actually were. I'm just wondering why that has gone away, now when I do shrooms things are more wavy than they used to be but I'm not seeing stuff like those first trips. Not that I'm really looking for that too hard again but I'm just wondering why my body doesn't give me the same effect anymore? I was told if you wait 2 weeks it will give you basically the same trip as if you first started, and I wait much longer than 2 weeks in between each of my trips, is my body just getting more used to them and it's not as potent anymore? maybe I'll switch strains, that is one possibility, as I do not remember the first strains I did.

How to find people to trip with?

I’m 18 and I love my psychedelics. Me and my friends do trip sometimes but how do I meet other people who take lsd or shrooms? Everyone I talk to about it never has done it any help?

Possible ego death or delirium? Post: NSFW

Upvotes

It was my birthday, and I have been taking paroxetine for anxiety for a few months.

That night, I drank a few beers and one mixed drink at a party. When I got home, I also had some rum and smoked a small amount of cannabis. At the party, an unknown woman sold me cannabis brownies. She said there were three strengths: strong, medium, and weak. I bought the weak and medium ones, but at home I only ate about one quarter of the “weak” brownie.

I felt fine at first and went to sleep. Around 5 a.m., I woke up hallucinating. I saw moving colors, almost like a kaleidoscope, and my thoughts were extremely confused. At one point I felt like I might die, but strangely I was not panicking or afraid — it felt as if I was calmly accepting that it was the end.

My sister woke up and found me like that. She said I kept asking whether I was alive and said that I was worried saying that all my muscles felt very rigid.

I know mixing alcohol, cannabis, and paroxetine was not a good idea, and I will not do it again. I’m scared now because I do not know whether this was just an intense edible reaction, whether the brownie may have contained something else, or idk. Could this have been what people describe as an “ego death,” or does it sound more like intoxication/panic/delirium?

Help me decide if this is a good trip idea or not?

Upvotes

I have been thinking about this plan for a trip in nature for a while now. Tomorrow might be the last warm summery day where I live and I kind of feels like a last chance to do it.

I was thinking of taking a small but noticeable dose of LSD, like 1/3 or half a tab, and going to a forest area that is around 40 minutes away from where I live. It's very straightforward to get there. Just a bus ride. I know the forest very well and have done a lot of trekking there. I would be taking a blanket, some food, some fruits, lots of water and some coffee. I know the exact spots where I can setup camp and not be bothered.

I guess I have two main issues, the LSD that I have is legal analogue and it takes so goddamn long to kick in, like around 3 hours. And the trip takes so long. So even if I go there very early in the day, by the time I am going back home I will still most likely be under the influence, and I don't know if I am comfortable riding a bus under the influence with people around and stuff.

I definitely would have preferred to do this on mushrooms, considering the much shorter duration, but I wasn't able to obtain any.

So I guess that is what I wanted to ask, is it a dumb plan? Any suggestions on how to make it safer?

Try it for a few minutes on your next psychedelic experience. Perhaps you'll get a touch of the heaven too.

It is mostly minimal techno with some acid, ambient, hypnotic, and isochronic.

First human trial of psilocin since the 1960s reveals better tolerability than psilocybin. Psilocin, the active compound in “magic” mushrooms, might cause fewer side effects than taking psilocybin. Taking the drug under the tongue, finding it well tolerated though less intense at the tested doses.

Substances and SSRIs

Upvotes

Hi all,

I just started a low dose of SSRIs a month ago (25 mg Zoloft) for minor anxiety/ depression. Using substances to alter states of consciousness has been a meaningful part of my personal and spiritual growth, and I’m wondering if anyone has experiences or knowledge about using any recreational substances while on SSRIs. Which ones should absolutely be avoided? Which ones may be safer than others? Etc etc. thanks for any info you may have!

Why do i feel like I’m tripping even though I’m not anything?

Upvotes

Recently I’ve been feeling like I’m in one big trip even though I’m not doing psychedelics and it’s been 3 months since the last time (I’m experienced with them). Lately though, and I mean in the last week, I feel like I’ve been tripping.

Now I’m not seeing any visuals or anything but my heart feels so open and I feel sensitive and like something in my reality is off. Now, I’m a sensitive person already, but I feel extra open and sensitive to life. Like when you’re doing mushrooms or acid or mescaline.. I see right through the veil even though I know I’m still deluded on many other things

What’s going on?? Has this happened to anyone?

Feels like something's in my throat when I trip.

Upvotes

I try to cough, hack, and spit it out.

I get the sensation instantly after hitting a bub, still in this world, aware of my body and my surroundings.

When I hit the nector collector and break through to the other side (no body, no place, no time, no thing, no difference between the seen and the seer, in another dimension), it happens when I return, can see my surroundings, and start to become present.

Thank you for your insight🤘🏼

How many G of unknown mush strain should i dose?

Upvotes

Hi to all my psychonauts,

First of all, a little bit of background: I'm a 22M 67kg I've taken high doses of psychedelics many times, including heroic doses of psilocybin analogues like 4-HO-MET and others. I also once took 500ug of 1P-LSD. I consider myself an experienced psychonaut, I've done more than 50 trips minimum, and some of those were heroic doses, as I said.

Now, the situation is that I have 3.5g of an unknown strain of mushrooms. I know they are not Penis Envy (the really, really potent ones), and that's all. Statistically, I would guess they should be on the average side of potency. I will be tripping alone in my room, as I've done many times before. This time, I'm looking for a trip with an intensity similar to around 100 - 150ug of LSD.

THE QUESTION IS: How many grams would you guys recommend I take to achieve this type of trip?

TL;DR: Experienced psychonaut (22M, 67kg, 50+ trips) with 3.5g of average-potency non-Penis Envy shrooms. Planning a solo room trip and aiming for an intensity equivalent to 100 - 150ug of LSD. How many grams should I take?

2g of Inca Star Gazers made me realize what an anxious person I am

Upvotes

Externally, I am a very confident and outgoing person. I can strike up conversation with anyone, I've been public speaking since I was 12, I even worked on radio for a bit, but all that kind of feels like bluster. I fear that all that showmanship is out of fear of people peering a bit too closely beneath the surface.

Last year, I took 2 g of Inca Star Gazers and as I was coming up, I sat atop a hill with a Rugby field below. As the shrooms kicked in, the field doubles in length and width and the players looked so mesmerizing in their intricate ballet of sprints and catches.

"Ask to kick the ball". This desire bounced around in my head as I descended from my viewpoint. I walked up to them and sounding like the most suspicious person to ever live, asked if I could have a free kick. The boys obliged me and told me it was a good shot before they packed up their training equipment for the day.

As we parted ways, my heart was hammering away in my chest. I was convinced they hated me or thought I was foolish, and that any kind of social faux pas was an offense punishable by death. Now obviously I'm on drugs when this is happening but it was scary later realizing some form of this fear lived in me on the day to day.

Later on, I was sitting in a patch of under the trees up in the mountains. It felt like a convening of old friends, and out of nowhere I began to talk about this story. I have brewing this story idea in my head for years, but haven't spoken about it to a soul. Again, all this confidence but too scared to tell people the things I'm really thinking.

As I get back into psychedelics next year, I hope I can work on being more open and authentic with people.

I had a rather profound experience on GT Mushrooms

Upvotes

Let me set this up as to why,

I have extensive experience with various psychedelics. I have experienced higher dose LSD (over 250 mics) and Mushroom (well over 7 gram) experiences in the past and they have always been enlightening and insightful, sometimes heavy but never to overwhelming. Last week I tried some GT that I have grown on my own. They were picked a few days before and immediately dehydrated. I decided to take a larger dose than I normally do (4.5 grams) as I have grown APE's, JMF's and Enigma's and I have been told that GT's are more mild than all of those.

Things came on as I expected and after an hour I decided to retire to my bedroom with the lights off as I usually do when I feel them coming on quick. I usually can just chill out and after half an hour or so, I will move to my basement and watch a movie or listen to music. This time I had to stay put. It got visual quickly and after the first wave, I had visions of these creatures that, as best as I can describe them, were mechanical octopuses that were guiding me through chaos. They were always positive and comforting.

It was never negative and it was actually very cathartic. Towards the end, as I was going out of everything, there was almost a feeling of rebirth. I have never had an experience like this. I was in a difficult place mentally going in and came out feeling reassured and more comfortable. I'm guessing it was the right place, right time for me. Any experiences like this.

How to time a soul bomb?

Upvotes

Very experienced with heroic doses of shrooms. A handful but not as much with LSD.

I've come to be very in-control of my shroom experiences, making the most of them through meditation and reflection, but now have decided I kinda want to trip for fun again just this once. It's a special occassion and just want to do something new this time, comfortably in a beautiful space with people I trust.

Seeking advice, what's the best way to time a soul bomb so that the tolerances don't wash each other out?

Soaking Morning Glory

Upvotes

Hello, I’ve tripped on LSA several times with a handful of different extraction methods all done through just taking after others’ methods, so nothing weird or adventurous. However, this time I have seeds I’d let soak in cold ( fridge temperature ) conditions in the dark for about a week due to circumstances.. I was only used to soaking them for 1/&th of that time. How does that affect the extraction? Did I lose LSA from this, and / or should I still try to go for it?

Feeling like a dizzy rat in the sewers after smoking hash

Upvotes

Yes, as the title says. cause I'm a bit frustrated about this

I smoked hash two times at my life at this point and it's always the same experience : Nausea, headache, fatigue, bitterness, feelings of vomiting or vomiting already, sever anxiety and fear

Even though my mate never experience this and he tells me how everything feels so good and happy at the other side of the high I felt total shit like I was totally fucked up and I don't know why. is it because the joint is a cigarette tobacco laced with hash and my body has an aversion to the nicotine cause nicotine always makes feel like shit or this is just how my body work with substances

It's disheartening for me cause this is the only substance that I can barely put my hands on here but it just fucks me up.

Look at the sky on 🍄! Sometimes we forget the biggest grounding that we have on this planet 🌎

It's something that has helped my wife and some of our friends on their trips! Shrooms and lsd can get definitely get someone quite introspective but you can also take that altered and enhanced attention and awareness to sensation and do some absolutely incredible things!

Why does THC seem to amplify negative things for me?

Upvotes

Many people say that cannabis amplifies positive experiences and makes activities more enjoyable. So I'm puzzled by how cannabis amplifies negative experiences and ideas for me.

The most frequent issue was getting stuck in unpleasant analytical thought. This pointed out things about trauma and loneliness which seemed valid even years later. But it never seemed to help me improve. With THC and practically no CBD, only an exceptionally good set and setting or a low dose like 2.5 mg THC in an edible avoided this and gave me a good experience. Otherwise, the pattern may be that alarming negative feelings arise, and they lead me into extended introspection about related subjects.

This year I found that at least 1:1 CBD:THC avoids this. Negative thoughts and feelings may still arise, but that focus passes and doesn't result in endless analytical thought. I've repeatedly confirmed this effect.

But there is another effect, which remains even with CBD: amplification of negative aspects of present moment experiences. For example, based on what people say about cannabis, I would have thought that putting on sunscreen cream might become an especially enjoyable sensual experience. But it seemed like something unpleasant which I only do due to fear of cancer. Cannabis also amplified physically unpleasant aspects of staying up late and physical exertion, even making me worry that there was something wrong with me because of how I felt. I've also had cannabis amplify the unpleasant aspects of being outside in hot and humid weather. Furthermore, it seems that when stoned, physically unpleasant experiences can inspire negative thoughts, of the kind which can lead to extended unpleasant analytical thought when I didn't take any CBD.

Yesterday I went on a long walk, intending to go to a cannabis store and buy an edible for use on another day. But I started thinking about these things and decided not to.

During that walk, I also had an interesting idea about cannabis insight for the first time. I used to think cannabis was good for insight because of how a lot of it still seemed valid years later while sober. But maybe that kind of insight, which basically explains how things suck without providing inspiration or ideas for improvement, isn't really good.
