It's surprising to me that Giuliani is a literal ghoul who most would never leave alone in a room with their children, yet he's still fighting for relevancy. It's pathetic how low someone like him can sink.

Boomers really don't live in the same time as us.
My dad, who lived in NYC when Giuliani was mayor (and we still are here) says he reduced crime and that NYC was much safer than it is now (despite NYPD statistics literally contradicting this).
He still says stuff like "he really did numbers on crime. No other mayor made it as safe!"
•
u/smthomaspatel 2h ago edited 2h ago
He saw a drop in crime for a bit. It was consistent with the same drop in crime that happened around the country. But being NY they were able to make a big deal about it and get national attention.
His Police Chief got a lot of credit for it. They put him on the cover of Newsweek. Rudy didn't like that the chief of police got credit for successful policing. So Rudy fired him.
•
u/Mr-MuffinMan 2h ago
Not to mention the reduction of crime falls in line with the ending of the crack epidemic.

And with the legalization of abortion (1973) and easier access to birth control through Planned Parenthood in 1970s.
I worked in a hospital staring g in 1980 and “D&C for bleeding” (abortions) were on the OR schedule every day. At least 6 a day. This was before anti abortion nuts got powerful. Average people were fine with abortions - only a loud tiny minority were agitating against abortion. When Reagan got into office he made anti-abortionism a big deal. (Pat Nixon had been pro-choice).
•
u/elebrin 1h ago
And the generally better quality of life that people were experiencing at the time. He was mayor through the late 90s, and everything was steadily getting better for everyone during that time. Yes, there was some bad shit going on, but people were just in general doing better economically during that time.
•
u/dsmith422 1h ago
The drop in crime also corresponds to the generation that grew up without leaded gasoline polluting everything with lead. That phase out began in 1975. The US had legalized abortion in 1973, so the effects overlap in the USA. But in other countries with legalized abortion, the phase out of leaded gasoline also corresponds to a decrease in crime in those countries a generation later.

Crime had started dropping under Dinkins. I lived in NYC at the time. Dinkins stated Take Back the Night and gave us a card that gave us 15% off restaurant prices on either Tuesday or Wednesday night, I can’t remember which. So restaurants ran specials on that night and people would go out. It started a change in the city.
But NYPD’s own statistics show a drop in crime staring under Dinkins.

All Rudy had to do was shut the fuck up after he left office and he could have ridden on the 9/11 coattails forever but he tied himself to Trump and fell into disgrace
•
u/CharleyNobody 1h ago
Rudy had a radio program in NYC after he left office where he ranted and raved over his rightwing agenda.
Did you know he forced Fox News onto cable when he was mayor?
Time Warner Cable refused to allow Fox News a spot on their lineup because at least 20 other stations were awaiting approval and TWC already had CNN, MSNBC, CNBC and NY1 on their lineup.
Giuliani threw a fit and took TWC to court. Giuliani lost and we all cheered. NYC knew Rupert Murdoch was a POS. It really seemed like we won at the time.
But there was a job called “Cable Czar” in NYC. A guy who ruled cable tv. Giuliani somehow got the current cable czar to resign (at the time it was said he was blackmailed) and Giuliani got a former law partner in the position of cable czar and the guy immediately overruled TWC and put Fox News on the air.
Giluaini was playing this game of blackmailing people through lawfare and other means to get what he wanted way back in 1990s. We hated him.
When he tried to run for senator from NY his numbers were so low he had to drop out and claim he was dying of cancer.
It’s amazing how people outside of NYC idolized him. We hated his dirty guts for so many things, like putting the Office of Emergency Management in WTC when he was told not to by FBI, NYPD and Secret Service. He also gave Motorola a no-bid contract for radios for FDNY that were never field tested and failed on 9/11.
Giuliani made NYC worse on 9/11. His actions killed firefighters. But since then, FDNY has turned MAGA (NYPD was always a MAGA force, but FDNY was different. Not anymore)

Funny how the people so worried about a Muslim mayor have no problems with the Muslims that gave Trump a plane, the Muslims that the US military will welcome for a fighter training squadron, Mohammed "bone saw" bin Salman and Ahmed al-Sharaa, a past ISIS/Al Qaeda fighter visiting Trump at the White House, or the Muslims that gave his son-in-law $2BN to "invest" for them.

"Outraged? I'm barely surprised. This is a country where women aren't allowed to drive a car. They're not allowed to be in the company of any man other than a close relative, they're required to adhere to a dress code that would make the Maryknoll Nun look like Malibu Barbie. They beheaded 121 people last year for robbery, rape, and drug trafficking, they've no free press, no elected government, no political parties, and the royal family allows the religious police to travel in groups of six, carrying nightsticks and they freely and publicly beat women. But "Brutus is an honorable man." Seventeen schoolgirls were forced to burn alive because they weren't wearing the proper clothing. Am I outraged? No, Steve. No Chris. No, Mark. That is Saudi Arabia, our partners in peace." - C.J. Cregg - West Wing Season 3, Episode 18

•
u/wefarrell 2h ago
Idk that it was more racist than we have been the last decade. It takes a lot of racism to elect someone like Trump, twice.
•
u/TrulyOutrageous42 1h ago
I think the distinction is that almost everyone in national-stage politics was racist to some degree in 2001. The national hysteria around islamophobia is hard to impart to people who didn't experience it, but it was pervasive. Now we certainly have more virulently unapologetic racists with no national trauma event to fall back on to justify it, but the majority of the liberals (actual leftists are rarely racist, let's be real) aren't on board with racism these days, while conservatives and regressives seem to have made it a policy choice because they think they can get away with it and also see this as their "last chance" before they lose the majority. (read: majority control of Congress, they've literally never been the majority, they're just good at looking like it because they refuse to back down and will lie cheat and steal to win)

I'm just saying, what if we went ahead and followed this logic. Muslims were involved in 9/11, so no Muslims at the ceremony. Christians were involved in SO many tragedies, let's bar any Christians from showing up such as, you know, the parents of those who died, just like there were muslims who died in 9/11 and their parents might be there to mourn them.
I know we shouldn't stereotype people, but racists sure are deeply fucking stupid as a rule.
oh. OH. It's the hypocrisy as a flex, how could I forget, they know what they're doing because stupid doesn't mean "isn't clever when it benefits themselves".
→ More replies (2)•
u/chinmakes5 2h ago
Oh please, as an old guy the 00s were nothing. We elected a black man as president. Yes it drove the racists crazy and they got louder, but most of us were good. When I was a kid in the 70s, the N word was used casually. I think I was in a pretty liberal area, we told ethnic jokes. Hell there was a sausage company in my town called Polock Johnny's.
Ethnic jokes were everywhere. We were on the East Coast. I kid moved in from Iowa. To tease him all the ethnic jokes became Iowa jokes. We realized that we didn't have to talk about the ethnicity, we all knew. I had a neighbor who proudly said that when a black family moves onto our block (probably 60 houses) he would move, happened not long after and sure enough he moved and he was a younger guy.

I especially love how we are gaslit today about how no one was racist towards Muslims in the wake of 9/11. I remember Bush Jr. getting on TV and hearing the snippet from his press conference telling people to not be Islamophobic to American Muslims.
And every year, there was an annual event of some racists shooting and killing an Indian/Sikh for wearing a turban because apparently only Muslims/Arabs wear turbans.

Can you imagine if it had happened until Clinton or Obama? They’d still be running off Dems allowing it to happen. Ever notice how every Republican administration causes some disaster and we all collectively act like it was unavoidable?
9/11 happened on Bush’s watch. He spent most of decade failing to get Bin Laden. It took Obama less than a year to get him
