Quiet week closing out Summer break. Peterborough Public Health inspected 8 food premises in the city this week. Four locations received infractions — three had at least one critical infraction and one had non-critical infractions only. Four inspections came back completely clean.

Here's what was found...

🔴 China Chef Restaurant — 1079 Clonsilla Ave, Peterborough West

Required inspection September 2, Follow-up September 4 · 5 critical/1 non-critical, then 0 critical/0 non-critical

The worst result this week, but it also had a fast recovery. This is the location's 5th critical infraction on record since September 2024. A required inspection on September 2 found food-contact surfaces not cleaned and sanitized after each use, food not processed in a safe manner, food not obtained from an inspected source, food in storage not protected from contamination, and an inadequate number of hand-washing stations — plus one non-critical issue (inspection results not posted as requested). A follow-up two days later (September 4) found the location fully clean, critical and non-critical.

🔴 Rahman Biryani House — 25 Lansdowne St W, Peterborough South

Required inspection, August 31 · 2 critical, 3 non-critical

This is the location's 3rd critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: multi-service articles/food-contact surfaces not cleaned and sanitized after each use, and food in storage not protected from contamination. Non-critical: equipment not properly constructed/maintained, furniture/equipment not sanitarily arranged, and floors not kept clean and in good repair. No follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 Farmboy Market — 774 Lansdowne St. W., Peterborough West

Required inspection, September 2 · 1 critical

This is the location's 5th critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: potentially hazardous food not held at or below 4°C. No actions were logged and no follow-up has been recorded yet.

🟡 Tim Hortons - 157 George St. North — 157 George St. N., Peterborough Central South

Complaint-triggered inspection, September 1 · 0 critical, 1 non-critical

Pest control not adequately maintained. Food handler education was provided on-site.

🟢 Royal Paan — 3-1135 Lansdowne St W, Peterborough South

Follow-up inspection, August 31 · Clean, no infractions.

Good-news update: this is the follow-up to the critical infraction we reported here back on August 11 (August 10–17 report). Fully resolved.

How to read this: "Critical" vs "non-critical" is Ontario's own regulatory risk tier, not a severity score we assign — critical findings relate directly to things that can make food unsafe (contamination, temperature control, hand hygiene); non-critical covers maintenance and paperwork requirements (equipment condition, signage, sanitizer test reagents) that health units still require but don't by themselves mean the food is unsafe. 🔴 = at least one critical infraction, 🟡 = non-critical only, 🟢 = zero infractions of any kind. Me and my wife (both south Asian) were on our nightly walk on broadway blvd when a white SUV came from the subdivision and stopped at the lights before turning left on chemong rd. We paid absolutely no attention to that car. As the light turns green the guy who was driving the SUV lowered his driver side window and yelled the N word loudly towards us. Mind you there is no one other than us two and that one car in the area at the time. And then he peeled off and drove away. We turned around and got back home before incase he takes a turn and comes back to do something more. I know many people who live in this suburb and are kind and respectful people. I am making everyone aware that we have a person like this as well. Unfortunately because it happened so fast and at night we couldn’t get the plates or any major identifying information. Stay safe everyone.

Hello, my wife and I are thinking of moving with our two boys aged 8 and 6 to Lakefield and would like to hear about whether there is a community of families with young kids in town? What is it like to live there with young children? Our boys love sports and the outdoors so it seems like it would be a good fit. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Very random but Jack Innanen as Paul Baker wearing a Thomas A Stewart jacket on "Adults". Decent show IMO, filmed in GTA, was interesting to see this piece of Peterborough, not sure if a genuine/vintage jacket and/or if there is any other Peterborough connections here that I may be unaware of.

My G2 road test is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 11:45am and I don't have a car lined

up for it. The test itself is 30 minutes, so it's about an hour all in.

Do any of the local driving schools rent their car out for the test if you

didn't take lessons with them? I know some do and some don't, and I'd rather

call the right ones tonight than work through the whole list. Rental counters

look like a dead end since I'd need my own policy.

Since I'm still on a G1, whoever helps would have to actually drive me to the

test centre or meet there, which I know is more than just handing over keys. Happy

to pay for the time and the gas.

If you've done your G2 here recently and rented from someone, I'd really

appreciate knowing who to call. Thanks.

This happened downtown last night. A woman approached someone and asked if they could pay for her food order by debit, saying she only had cash. A man looking like a delivery driver was sitting in a car with the food.
The person agreed to help, paid for the order, and was given cash in return. However, the woman handed back a different bank card instead of the person’s own card and had stolen the original. This was not noticed until the scammers had left. Weirdly too the persons name came up on the “receipt” after they paid with debit.
Luckily, something felt off, so the bank was called immediately. While on the phone with the bank, they were already attempting to use the stolen card.

Hi!

I just noticed that my car has a large wound that looks infected on her ear. Assuming most vets are closed tomorrow, are there any emergency vets open late today or that might be open tomorrow?

Not sure who I'm able to contact, tried the non emergency line and they suggested the humane society, which is closed today, any other suggestions as I'm unable to take her home with my dog.

They were left tied with no water and no food by the tracks

Edit: Lady on street has taken dog to vet.
