They could afford five if everyone got their defence spending on track

edit: I half considered not posting this as I knew someone would take it far too seriously. I'm just a cheeky Brit making a joke

u/Flesroy 4d ago

as of right now everyone pretty much seems to have their defence spending on track.

The average of the european members + canada is now firmly above the 2% agreement and the only country that I can't find numbers on (but seems to not be meeting the goal?) is iceland.

no, i understood the joke. I just thought it was an important enough topic that real information should be provided.

u/steelcity65 4d ago

I bet you're a blast a parties, too...

u/Flesroy 4d ago

i would like to think so.

people can be multifaceted.

I think what he was trying to say, or at least should be trying to say is “you must be fun at parties.” That is, you are specifically OBLIGATED to be fun at them.

u/breathingcarbon 4d ago

My party crew has a very strict fun enforcer. “Dancing is compulsory” was a sign they took to our most recent gathering. It was very good and lots of dancing was done.

You're welcome at my parties any time.

(They're a bit shit and usually consist of me drinking some beers, but anyway, you can come too.)

Do you remind everyone that people who live in Phoenix are Phoenicians? If so, Louis C.K. talked about you once.

u/Flesroy 4d ago

why do you keep trying to insult me man? was my comment really this offensive to you?

u/KHS__ 4d ago

Ignore that clown. There're always a bunch of them who can't seem to handle real information pouring through their porn app.

I, for one, am glad for that lil tidbit of knowledge you shared. So, thank you.

People like you are so tiring. There was no need to inject politics into a perfectly good joke. It ruins the fun.

u/Flesroy 4d ago

the joke is inherently political, it also doesn't make actual sense as it is based on misinformation. if you can enjoy it regardless of that, surely you can enjoy it regardless of my comment.

in any way badgering me about it is not gonna achieve anything. throwing insult after insult while i have been pretty cordial this whole time is not exactly a shining personality trait either.

Jesus dude take the stick out your ass

u/Punished_Lexi 4d ago

my guy the joke is political in and of itself

u/steelcity65 4d ago

Jokes don't have to be true to be funny. While many truths are said in jest, not all jests need be true. The correction was unnecessary and added nothing to the joke. In fact, it was a blatant attempt to ruin the joke and to ruin the fun.

Don’t let facts get in the way of MAGA propaganda being turned into memes on Reddit.

Hanlon’s razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

(Not calling OP stupid here, just that it’s a joke and therefore by its nature a somewhat stupid statement).

Relax liberal, it's called dark humor.

They have their defense spending on track, and yet are still lacking because the military stockpiles they're supposed to maintain aren't there. They sold them. It was so some politicians could make themselves look good by bringing in the money from the sales and cutting the costs of maintaining those stockpiles.

They were working under the idea that the US had so much stockpiled that it was enough for all of them. Then Trump came in and showed them why it's so unbelievably stupid and irresponsible to put all your eggs in one basket.

So, yeah - their spending is where it should be, but it's still not enough because stockpiles are what you lend or sell to allies when there's conflict - like maybe a large European country getting invaded.

They're also used to give yourself enough time to ramp up manufacturing when your country gets into a prolonged conflict.

They're super freaking important and most of European NATO just got rid of them because of stupid politicians.

So, they kind of need to spend even more to fix things because Russia is absolutely taking advantage of the fact that Europe was so militarily unprepared for long term conflict.

u/Beragond1 4d ago

“On track” would have been 2% a decade ago. We’re parked on the edge of WWIII and the whole alliance is short on interceptors and ballistic missiles.

u/BigRedS 4d ago

Hey in the UK we're also short on surface combatants and IFVs! We're doing this way more completely than a lot of NATO.

We hope soon to be able to be able to refuel our own aircraft. Imagine that!
