This Wirt Rowland designed clubhouse started construction in 1928 and was left unfinished due to the Great Depression, with only the exterior shell being completed. It was left windowless and empty until 1953, when the building was finished and much of the lower facade was stripped down and modernized for use as an apartment building.

This was for college photography in the early 1980s. I would load my car with school equipment and just drive down from upstate, with no idea how to navigate Manhattan or even where to go. I'd set up wherever I saw an opportunity; things were more lax back then.

This was shot in 4x5, yielding a nice 16x20 print on Portriga Rapid. On the original print, details as fine as the street sign are nice & sharp.

The temporary harbor section in the old photo now forms the foundation of the pier.

The beautiful structure you see was Hazle Hall which was built in 1866. It was the first auditorium in town. It was on the second floor. In 1868 Hazle Drugs filled its first prescription in the first floor corner of the building, and the drugstore still operates today across the street. In 1905 a balcony was added and the auditorium became the Family Theatre which lasted until 1955. In the summer of 1964 Hazle Hall was torn down for the expansion of a
Bank which today houses several other businesses.

Charlotte, N.C.

The Island House in Bellows Falls, Vermont, around 1900 and the same scene in 2026. This hotel was built in 1851, and it was a popular summer resort for southern visitors prior to the Civil War. The war hurt the hotel’s business, and it never fully recovered, although its prominent postwar guests included President Ulysses S. Grant and General William T. Sherman, who both stopped here in the summer of 1869.

The hotel ultimately closed in 1887, and the building was later used as a warehouse until it burned in 1907. The site of the hotel is now an abandoned gas station, as shown in the bottom photo.
