Dumb factoid that’s been misunderstood and misconstrued more every time I see it. 5-10% have no inner monologue. 30-50% have an inner monologue some of the time. The remaining have an inner monologue frequently or most of the time.

I’m not sure if the share not doing that is any different in the aforementioned 3 groups though.

I'm probably just splitting hairs here because of what people think "functioning" means but you can function in society without having a role or a job. I'm honestly not trying to be a dick, but dehumanizing people isn't going to solve any issues you have with the homeless/criminals, or unemployed people. They are functioning in society. A very few number of people exile themselves from it. Homeless people are functioning in society. Unemployed people aren't necessarily excluding themselves from everyday tasks. Just because they're not doing it the way most people think they should doesn't mean they're not a part of it. And at risk of sounding like a "wokey virtue signaler" a lot of people can't fuckin help it. i.e. a person with extreme developmental disabilities isn't "not functioning in society" they are literally a part of it. You either treat them that way and suck up the cost or you dehumanize them.

One of the vlog brothers doesn't internally visualize things and that dude wrote at least one book. I don't think anyone would accuse him of being dumb, but because he's not able to visualize things in his mind, apparently a bunch of people think they're better/smarter than he is.

Those of us with an active inner monologue may have trouble imagining how someone thinks without one.
Doesn't mean it's not happening, of course. It's just hard to fathom. It also brings up the question of to what degree our monologue is actually creating the thought process, vs. merely documenting it?

An internal monologue is one function of the mind, not the ultimate truth of who/what you are, nor a measure of one’s intelligence.
Often, the same people that totally identify with their thoughts, are the same ones who get caught in constant anxious/negative thoughts.
…There’s really 50%+ of the population out here walking around with EVERYTHING going on in their head??… /s

It’s not a lack of internal conversation. It’s just a different way of thinking. I have barely any internal monologue but my head won’t shut the fuck up. I just experience my thoughts visually most of the time.
Stressed about work? Visualise having a fight with my boss. Forgot the laundry? Suddenly visual image of my clothes in the basket. Excited for vacation? Imagining myself at the pool. No words needed.
I can talk inside my head, just like most people can visualise things inside their head. My brain just defaults to the second for most things.
