Context hat:
During congressional hearings on violent video games in the 1990s, the president of Nintendo of America claimed “Night Trap will never appear on a Nintendo system”, also Mortal Kombat was censored on SNES. Oh, and Sonic was a SEGA exclusive, and for everyone under 20, SEGA used to make their own consoles.

Night Trap was a game for the SEGA CD (an add-on for the Genesis that allowed users to play CD-based games). It uses live action footage that can change depending on user input (switching camera feeds, activating traps), and follows some sort of group of vampire hunters - well, hunting vampires at a young adult woman’s sleepover. A common misconception was that the goal of the game was to hurt the women, when in fact you’re meant to save them.
Also, yes, SEGA Genesis was priced competitively with the SNES, and actually launched first in the US so it had more time to build a library of games, and SEGA allowed more mature titles.

Sega always ahead of its time , i remember the sega cd just not night trap but if it wasnt at the video store to be rented i wasnt playing it . I didnt own a sega cd though we got a ps then an xbox . Good times though all of those systems were awesome and living on top of a mountain with no arcade . Came in handy
Dreamcast was super ahead of its time as well it was a shame when it didnt sell better . It was expensive from what I remember its been a while . Games were expensive too but yeah that whole system had a lot going for it .

One of the reasons you may not have heard of Night Trap would be because it was pulled from store shelves after the 1993 Senate hearings on violent video games. Mortal Kombat and Lethal Enforcers were also mentioned due to their violence and the latter having a light gun shaped like a real gun, but Night Trap was totally misrepresented. (That's where the "common misconception" the other poster mentioned came from.) It's pretty hard to convince major retailers like Toys "R" Us and Kay-Bee Toys to continue carrying copies when everyone believes that you're doing deplorable things in it, and the game isn't popular enough to have people speaking up about how BS that statement was.
There were loads of reasons why the Dreamcast didn't sell better, but its price tag wasn't one of them. It was roughly $200 for a base system with no pack-ins—roughly the same cost as other new consoles around that time. (The one exception would be the PS1, which cost $300 at launch; the PS2 followed suit with the same price.) One of the major issues were that people were still burned on the Saturn (and 32X and Sega CD), so even though there were people that were high on it, there were a lot more people that were wary about history repeating itself. People also realized that you could burn video games onto regular CD-Rs, which cut into its profits a decent bit… though I don't know just how much, given that this was 1999–2001. I know my mom got some burned copies from a retailer, but it would be insane for people to download games using a 56k modem, to say nothing about finding a site to host the image files back then. But the biggest death kneel was the PS2 launching around a year later… and given that it's still the best-selling console right now, that should say something about how huge that was. It was just a mess for Sega all around, with some being its own fault, and some being outside of its control.

Also FF7 was supposed to be for the N64 Disk Drive but becuase it flopped in Japan, all future plans for it were scrapped and FF7 become a staple of the PS1

The N64DD didn't come out until years after FF7, I believe they just realized they wouldn't be able to fit the cinematic production value on a cartridge-sized storage capacity and couldn't convince Nintendo to consider using CDs.

I think it’s both? Because the original Nintendo CD project was what became the Phillips CD-i, also known as the greatest own goal in gaming history, and that burned Squeenix enough to make them go with Sony. The only detail I’m unsure of is whether the CD-i alternative was the N64DD or just its own disc-based console.

Well Phillips was brought on to make a CD addon for the SNES after Nintendo chose them over Sony, not the N64, this was many years before. I don't know if there was any plans for them to do something for the N64, I've never heard of that.

As a 19 year old, is the Genesis/Mega Drive really that obscure to the rest of us now? I mean, I can see someone my age not knowing about the Dreamcast or the Saturn, but I don’t think the MD’s existence is news to anyone older than maybe ten. There’s still tons of merchandise depicting it and references in new Sonic games/compilations

Final Fantasy VII would have the opposite effect than in real life (people in the early 90s would expect that on a Nintendo console, rather than it being a big deal that it released on the switch)

Someone in the 90s would have a heart attack if you showed them the complete Smash Ultimate roster.
Imagine showing someone back then that Sonic, Cloud, Ryu, and Solid Snake could all duke it out exclusively on a Nintendo system.

Heck yeah, Night Trap. This version is way more playable than the original, and I like that it has a documentary about the game's reception at the time
