I was on a jury last year. We didn't actually choose a foreman (who ended up being me) until we started deliberations. Also, my job paid me for the work time I missed but not for the day off of work that I spent at court.
Probably a day they would not have been scheduled to work, but still had to go into the jury duty. I’m assuming their regular schedule is like Saturday-Wednesday with Thursday and Friday off so when they had to attend jury duty of Thursday, their job did not pay them for that day.
