They did the same with the Gulf of Mexico.

They just cling to their “policy” of showing each region whatever their government tells them to.

So anywhere outside the US, you’ll still see Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.

u/iCowboy 8d ago

We get Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) in the UK despite literally no one here using the Trump name for it.

Why we have to be reminded of his idiocies is a mystery - presumably something to do with Google Execs sucking up to Trump.

u/SaintUlvemann 8d ago

...presumably something to do with Google Execs sucking up to Trump.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, fired 28 workers for protesting their company selling cloud services to assist with the Israeli genocide. He is presumably going to remain a conservative long after Trump is gone.

u/Krissy_ok 8d ago

Same in Australia

u/hennell 8d ago

We speak and read English here though. If you read a US article about the Gulf of America you might want to look it up.

They do the same with things like Bannau Brycheiniog which has the official name first then the other name you might know it as after (Brecon Beacons). I don't think Google are trying to suck up to the Senedd though.

u/Tardisgoesfast 2d ago

They also speak English in Australia.

u/Hairydone 8d ago

Right. I don’t understand why so many seem so shocked when this is exactly what happened less than 2 years ago. Of course Google was going to change it, regardless of how dumb it may seem.

u/The_Majestic_Crab 8d ago edited 8d ago

I'm in Canada. Says Gulf of America and Lake America for me

Edit: my phone and I are both from the US. Changed my Google account to Canada when I moved here, but I guess Maps didn't get the message. My Canadian phone says "Lake Ontario" and "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" so disregard original comment

u/KiwiObserver 8d ago

Canada should rename the lake to Lake Fuck Off America on their side.

u/CaptainZippi 7d ago

Lake Epstein Files

u/boku111 8d ago

I'm in Chile - it says Lake of America 😡

u/toadphoney 8d ago

That’s rough. Chile isn’t even a lake!

u/joeefx 8d ago

They were just following orders.

u/Actual__Wizard 8d ago

Okay, that's fine, then they can go to bankruptcy court and get that settled with those people.

Obviously we're no longer going to tolerate their internet search monopoly that is operated by tech fascists.

Their evil schemes should have been blocked by regulators a long time ago.

People are getting tired of Google's "Nazi view of the internet" where only their buddies get any visibility.

u/DudeB5353 8d ago

It’s still pathetic for them to kiss his pedo ass

u/Sofiasunshine86 8d ago

This will age like milk when this shit is finally over

u/pearljamboree 8d ago

u/s1ugg0 7d ago

I just installed Here We Go to replace Google maps app. So far I'm happy.

Im not going back. I have no time or patience for these idiotic games. If Google maps wants to humiliate themselves thats their business. I need accurate maps for navigating.

u/rgregan 8d ago

Knew they would. They wasted no time getting Gulf of America up there. Asskissers.

u/joeefx 8d ago

Those spineless traitors

u/SeanyDay 8d ago

They just do what the nation says. If Portugal renamed a lake in their territory, they would update it too.

It's really an American government problem

u/joeefx 8d ago

Naming lakes is the jurisdiction of the US Board of Geographic Names. Not the president of Epstein Island.

u/SeanyDay 8d ago

I'm not a fan of the Cheeto in Chief but that doesn't have anything to do with company policies for a map database

u/joeefx 8d ago

Can anyone just say start calling something something else ?

u/SeanyDay 8d ago

No the executive branch of the US government isn't "anyone".

Regardless of the clown in the chair

u/joeefx 8d ago

King Trump you mean?

u/SeanyDay 8d ago

You're living proof that being anti trump and being slow af aren't mutually exclusive...

u/Journeys_End71 8d ago

You LITERALLY just said “they just do what the nation says” but when reminded that jurisdiction for naming conventions is the US Board of Geographic Names, you somehow ignored that critical fact and say “has nothing to do with company policies”

Pick. A. Lane. Stop moving the goalposts

u/SeanyDay 8d ago

Way to misuse debate tactics....

My comment actually conveyed that thoughts on the president don't change the policies of private companies.

Trump's team almost definitely sent a request. He's known for circumventing legitimate systems and laws to please his own ego and goals.

If a request from the executive office of the us government hits google offices, they will comply.

Ensuring the president is held accountable to proper checks and balances has been failing for two terms and an insurrection as well as dead American citizens and war crimes.

You think the name of a lake is where people are going to draw the line?

You sounded so smug in your comment while being as stupid as a fox news host the entire time.

u/msb2ncsu 8d ago

They use the naming services of governments across the world for localization. There is no action from Google (or Apple & Co) for this. It is simply an API call to the USGS Geographic Names Information Service. Trumps executive action changes the name with the USGS and the API calls at mapping providers automatically get the names.

u/quad_damage_orbb 7d ago

It was via an executive order, that only applies to the US government, it does not rename anything on behalf of the entire US.

u/SeanyDay 7d ago

Someone literally went through it with exact detail in the thread of my original comment.

He is able to update via a specific component of our government and that database is what Google's API is hitting so it goes into effect.

And we already discussed how it's hysterical to think he will get checked and balanced here as opposed to all the other way worse stuff he's gotten away with

u/Jay3000X 8d ago

Things have been going downhill for Google since they got rid of their "Don't be Evil" motro

u/impy695 8d ago

They'd been going downhill before that happened

u/Leucurus 8d ago

Yes, I suppose logically, they'd have to - you have to be evil already to get rid of a "don't be evil" motto

u/Sad_Eggplant_5455 8d ago

Wait. You’re telling me google had the motto don’t be evil? And now they’ve greased up their cheeks and make it clap for daddy?

u/pearljamboree 8d ago

I totally forgot about that!

u/m1j2p3 8d ago edited 8d ago

There was a time when I thought Google was an ethical company that genuinely tried to do the right thing while also offering a superior product. I no longer think any of that is true.

u/ApplianceHealer 8d ago

Their maps product was the best for a while. I use Apple Maps mostly now, despite its lingering faults. Time to give MapQuest another try.

Google also deserves scorn for going all-in on AI search results, and contaminating Google Earth with generative AI images.

u/Diz7 8d ago

"Don't be evil" was a company mantra. They were in tech for the love of the game, the oodles of money they made was just a means for them to pursue that.

That changed after the restructuring under Alphabet inc.

Now it's about quarterly returns like every other company.

u/Shakewhenbadtoo 8d ago

They removed the " do no harm " clause from their charter many years ago.

u/jcoddinc 8d ago

I'm tired boss

u/IAFarmLife 8d ago

I sent an customer complaint when they changed the name of The Gulf Of Mexico. I'll do it again for this.

u/hereandthere_nowhere 8d ago

I tried earlier. It has been made a pain in the ass to do it.

u/J_P_Freely 8d ago

Fuck right off, sincerely, a Canadian 🇨🇦

u/VariousOperation166 8d ago

Cowards. Just wait it out. An executive order is not a legal obligation

u/nixtarx 8d ago

Toadies

u/UTtransplant 8d ago

Apple Maps show Lake Ontario, but the label is north of the border line. I have heard Map Quest has a good app, and they have publicly stated they aren’t going long with this foolishness.

u/msb2ncsu 8d ago

Apple Maps will show it as soon as they get their automated API pull from the USGS’s GNIS. They aren’t changing the names on their own. Same reason they show Gulf of America in the US.

u/pistoffcynic 8d ago

This is what happens when you pay for access.

Bye bye Google. Fuck your products.

u/RoachIsCrying 8d ago

It's Lake Ontario (Lake America) for me but still these inbreds are a bunch of asslickers

u/LightVapor 8d ago

And as inconvenient as it is, it's time to delete all my Google shit. I would encourage you all to do the same.

u/soopirV 8d ago

Been meaning to switch to Duck and Firefox anyway, good as time as any!

u/Bowling4rhinos 8d ago

Google? SuckSuckNo! I just deleted it and now I'm on DuckDuckGo!

u/Bowling4rhinos 8d ago

Google? SuckSuckNo! I just deleted it and now I'm on DuckDuckGo!

u/LaSerenita 8d ago

It's so embarrassing to be a US citizen now.

u/worldscollice 8d ago

Bad choice to go along with Trump’s madness!

u/ghostofstankenstien 8d ago

Fucking disgraceful.

Shame Google.

u/MasterNemm 8d ago

I was on a Disney Cruise and the captain announced we were sailing through the Gulf of America and I damn near stormed the bridge. Disgusting.

u/LeftHandedBuddy 8d ago

Cowards!!

u/PALOmino1701 8d ago

I am outside the US and mine says “Lake Ontario (Lake America)”.

How embarrassing.

u/msb2ncsu 8d ago

That’s standard naming convention for when different governments have different names for the same place in their respective government naming APIs. Google and Apple aren’t doing anything but showing what the government services say.

u/LeftWingTexican 8d ago

Only a worthless MORON will call that lake anything other than Lake Ontario.

To do otherwise shows that you are a congenital IDIOT.

u/gustoreddit51 8d ago

Billionaires deep throating Trump.

Yeah, I know.

u/obamawonthepeacepriz 8d ago

Fuck them. Now when we mention Google, it will only be in bad terms.

u/damianp67 8d ago

Can confirm, stupid news. Can't wait to see it changed back in a few years.

u/External-Emotion8050 8d ago

Disappointing

u/greenlantern2929 8d ago

Fucking stupid. The fact that anyone bends the knee to this pedo rapist warmonger is beyond me. Anyway, Lake Ontario and Gulf Of Mexico it stays for me.

u/Hugh-Jorgin 8d ago

Only other ones do

u/artful_todger_502 8d ago

I used AI to ask "Why does Google capitulate to the juvenile reactions of a raging man child who changes names of geographical elements for the sake of retaliation?"

And the Ai told me it's apolitical and had always used a governments "GNIS" department to name regions according to that regions countrys' methodology or some such nonsense, but then also bright up a lot of articles about Google being party of the problem, etc ...

u/Gargravars_Shoes 8d ago

Fuck Google Maps then.

u/Catkillledthecurious 8d ago

Only. In. The. US. It's still correct elsewhere .

u/msb2ncsu 8d ago

Because it is only changed in the USGS’s Geographic Naming Information Service. Google and Apple aren’t changing the names, simply reflecting government data as done for pretty much every country..

u/sfled 8d ago

My goto for search is https://duckduck.go. I don't use google much for anything, other than some subscriptions via gmail.

u/Sad_Eggplant_5455 8d ago

It’s okay I just changed the White House wiki to “the run down crap hole where incest brained pedo lying narcoleptics sometimes lives”

u/redwbl 8d ago

Well, time to update default search engines and use different Map apps.

And oh by the way. Fuck Google.

u/Krissy_ok 8d ago

This is my red line. I have begun the De-Googling. I know I should have started ages back but it's a hassle. Goodbye Maps, hello Waze

u/kend2121 8d ago

Way to stick it to the man! Of course, Google owns Waze, so…

u/Krissy_ok 8d ago

What‽ Seriously fucking hell. Thanks for heads up though

u/mathpat 8d ago edited 7d ago

Goodbye google maps, hello mapquest app.

Edit to add: If you need one that works with Android Auto, use the Tom Tom app.

u/SaltyInternetPirate 8d ago

Lake Epstein is more accurate

u/SomeOkeByTheSea 8d ago

at this stage google is just bending over whenever he opens his trap

u/Zetavu 7d ago

All tech executives have been bought and paid for by this administration. Hopefully the next one will take them ti task for it.

This is how they keep from having to pay higher taxes.

u/DeviationConcession 8d ago

Cool. I just changed the name of Google to Gargle.

u/RexCarrs 7d ago

How about gargoyle?

u/TerrakSteeltalon 8d ago

I really wish that Mapquest didn’t suck

u/shibby5000 8d ago

Do they give bad or inefficient directions?

u/TerrakSteeltalon 8d ago

Yeah, it’s just really not good. I tried it after the Gulf of Mexico.

A friend just tried it the other day and it sent him to a gas station/convenience store that wasn’t there

u/Actual__Wizard 8d ago

New search tech is coming: Tech fascists monopolizing the internet must come to an end and it has become intolerable.

u/nobody-u-heard-of 8d ago

That's sad. Course. I assume that if you're in Canada it's still called lake Ontario because half that lake belongs to them.

u/ProfAsmani 8d ago

Yes big businesses always yield to fascist dictators.

u/glindadc 8d ago

I Am in California and looked up what Google Maps would show me a few minutes ago and I saw Lake Ontario

u/LilacHelper 8d ago

I looked it up yesterday and it still said Lake Ontario. I looked it up just now, entered Lake Ontario and now it says Lake America. It lists the Great Lakes on the side and at the top is Lake America.

u/Wide__Stance 8d ago

Freedom fries, Lake America. The stupid never change.

u/AreYouItchy 8d ago

Hey, Mapquest?

u/Jim-Jones 8d ago

Pathetic pussies.

u/Polyxeno 8d ago

As if Google Maps is "official" in some way . . .

u/JPGinMadtown 8d ago

Switch to MapQuest.

u/LilacHelper 8d ago

Time to leave Chrome and Google.

u/Couchman79 8d ago

Google can't move away from the Federal government There are billion$ of reasons in government contracts as why they will placate the octogenarian in DC for 27-28 more months.

I keep moving away from google. Created one new email for access to YouTube on line. Moved my Gmail accounts to Proton Mail and use Proton VPN. Safari in main browser backup is FireFox and use duck Duck go and Startpage. It's a chore t escape Google. I've had healthcare providers and state agencies help desk personnel tell me I'd have fewer issues if I'd just install Chrome. Not gonna happen.

u/Coolcoolcool1515 8d ago

Google donated a lot to the campaign

u/DeerOnARoof 8d ago

They did it with Gulf of America as well. This is the least of our problems right now.

u/foundtuna 8d ago

Is there votes for changing names of things or places? Or is it as simple as a president deciding it has a new name?

u/No-Cup-8096 8d ago

Google maps needs to change it back! Trump is not the king of the world! He’s a malignant narcissist that Google is feeding!

u/Misterr_Joji 8d ago

Cucks.

u/Bokth 8d ago

Google's old motto was: Don't be evil.

They couldn't live up to that standard apparently

u/snooplarue 8d ago

Bitches

u/InternationalAnt4513 8d ago

Just delete Google and quit using it. It sucks anyway. You can’t trust them. They pull up biased information on most searches by those who pay to play. Just use Brave or DuckDuckGo.

u/AdditionalBat393 8d ago

I am disowning Google

u/epired 8d ago

Well, i guess im using waze from now on

u/Rungk4d 8d ago

they can push it globally, since 90% user using google anyway

u/Leucurus 8d ago

Insane. He has not even really changed its name!

u/RexCarrs 7d ago

He'll rename the Atlantic to trump Ocean and the Pacific to Ocean trump. I imagine Davey Jones' Locker will remain untouched.

u/RexCarrs 7d ago

Another rabbit hole.

u/Lopsided_Weird_3293 7d ago

Never using Google again willingly

u/Full_Rise_7759 7d ago

Lake of the Orange Pedophile - sounds more appropriate.

u/DangerousBill 7d ago

Not on my tablet. It's still Lake Ontario.

u/Donmiggy143 7d ago

"Evil-R-Us"

u/nativenorseman 6d ago

Today I uninstalled Google Maps and switched to Apple Maps.

u/kittypaws4all 4d ago

Uggggggh! Just because this entity desires special treatment doesn’t make it official. It furthers the idiocy of this entire term of presidency by which kissing ass keeps you in favor. It makes me sick!

u/DrSendy 3d ago

Weak as piss. Once an amazing company, now churning out medicocrity.

u/Tardisgoesfast 2d ago

We don’t even own half of it.

u/CarrieWhiteDoneWrong 2d ago

Fuck you google

u/rolyoh 8d ago

My unpopular opinion is that they are doing this solely for the sake of accuracy because Google Maps is one of their biggest service offerings and they need to live up to and maintain their brand reputation among their customers. I don't think they are doing it to please anyone in the White House. Someone who doesn't know the history or geography of Lake Ontario will inevitably search for "Lake America" and want to know where it is.

u/pichael289 8d ago

Easier to just smile and nod and change it back later.

u/bomb3x 8d ago

They should change the name of this sub to 'News for the Stupid'. Do you people actually expect them to decide which name is more correct every time 2 countries call something different names? It is their policy now, and always has been, to use whatever name has been chosen by the country you are in. It still says 'Lake Ontario' for me as I live in Canada. Use your brains before raging over every stupid little thing.

u/Informal_Process2238 8d ago

Do you honestly think that the name of a lake is something the president decides? That shit stained dictator wannabe gives himself new powers daily and were all supposed to play along ?
