🔥 A leopard seal and a southern elephant seal seem to disagree on who should keep the resting spot.

Two tons of pure stubbornness battling for prime beachfront property.

u/xxxmechashivaxxx 21h ago

Sounds like a typical day at a public Cali Beach.

u/Psychedelic_Jedi 17h ago

2 tons? Nah that's Florida Alabama territory

u/xxxmechashivaxxx 4h ago

I thought there was some black chick out in Cali called two ton. Want she the one who sure Uber?

u/StaredAtEclipseAMA 5h ago

Nah this definitely applies to cali as well

u/Repulsive-Visit7443 18h ago

wonder if they ever get exhausted mid-battle and just take a nap in the middle of the fight

u/Head-Growth-523 22h ago

The elephant seal is like "just roll away skinny" 🤣

u/M7A1-RI0T 21h ago

“We’ve been over this Bill. You get nights and weekends and I get whenever I want”

u/xxxmechashivaxxx 21h ago

They got that ozempic neck too.😂😂

u/cesam1ne 22h ago edited 22h ago

Lol, the way leopard seal rolls back while still trying to act tough, after realizing the elephant seal is completely unfazed.. cinema

u/MaMaximillian 22h ago

Elephant seal unbiased of what?

u/cesam1ne 22h ago

..oops. I mistyped without noticing. Thanks

u/MaMaximillian 17h ago

Got you fam

u/untoldletters 22h ago

Deeply unserious creatures

u/GandalfVirus 22h ago

I wouldn’t say that, Leopard seals genuinely terrify me.

Elephant seals though, I mean. Honk honk.

u/lia-delrey 21h ago

Leopard seals freak me OUT and I dont know why I'm so glad I'm not the only one

u/Own_Guarantee_8130 21h ago

It’s the teeth for me. They have the face of a CGI dinosaur.

u/TheJurri 21h ago

They look oddly reptilian for a mammal. They're almost serpentine in the water, yet larger than you'd expect. And that grin with their large, black voids pf eyes don't help.

I love them.

u/Ancient-Mating-Calls 20h ago

They look like a modern day gorgonopsid!

u/Montymisted 19h ago

Gizzentight. Or bless you in English.

u/annabananaberry 21h ago

Happy Feet really did a number on me.

u/egomanick 17h ago

For me it's the "seals" contradiction. You hear the word and think left, and then there is mf on the right

u/12Fox13 15h ago edited 14h ago

Fun fact: They both aren’t true seals. 🤓 I was absolutely wrong and shouldn’t comment when I’m high!

u/egomanick 14h ago

Elaborate. Wiki says both leopard and Weddell seals belong to true seal tribe Lobodontini

u/12Fox13 14h ago

See my edit! Thank you for correcting me!

I’m not going to elaborate where I went wrong

u/egomanick 14h ago

Hey its alright man you got me curious. Its a finicky thing when the distinction between true seals and likes of fur seals is just that one family has ears

u/lia-delrey 17h ago

This deserves a trigger warning 😭 holy fuck

u/NightBawk 21h ago

They're basically furry water dinosaurs. They're also very fast and deadly hunters, and one drowned a marine biologist while she was out snorkeling.

u/GalDebored 21h ago

Because they have what amounts to alligator mouth!? Other than orcas, they're the the main apex predator found around Antarctica. There have even been a few recorded attacks on humans - one which resulted in the death of a biologist. They can absolutely be intimidating as hell!

u/Ubeube_Purple21 20h ago

Because all it takes to turn this blubber butt into Antarctica's polar bear knockoff is to give it legs.

u/Seagull_Slapper 5h ago

Freaky mouths

u/AccurateSimple9999 20h ago

Leopard seals are basically useless on land, apart from threat gestures. They really don't want to bite you either way. Neither do elephant seals, but look at them, they're like whales that don't die when they strand.

u/koolaidismything 21h ago

The ones I grew up with in the Bay Area are like a really annoying rooster that never shuts up. But you won’t find a single person who acknowledges that after they become an adult cause after you see them and how they just sunbathe and play it’s like.. go for it guys.

u/jackalope268 21h ago

Elephant seals are much scarier to me. They might accidentally squish me with all that weight and leopard seals are kinda smart so if they attack you its probably on purpose

u/hymntastic 21h ago

I mean if you just walk slowly you can outpace an elephant seal on land. If you're getting squashed by the beachmaster it's probably on you.

u/Nyko_E 18h ago

If you're getting squashed by the beachmaster, where else would it be but on you?

u/Fanastik 11h ago

Butt on you?

u/oily76 18h ago

Unless one falls on you.

u/Redqueenhypo 19h ago

It’s not the leopard seal’s fault that we think their food is cute

u/ajabernathy 18h ago

Casual Geographic did a video on them https://youtu.be/QyLYAB5zk7E?is=JbkDhVnwsGpigkjU

u/Hexbug101 16h ago

Counterpoint though, they’ve tried to feed divers penguins, which is just so adorable, they would bring them mostly alive penguins at first and would grab them again after the diver didn’t take it to try again

u/GandalfVirus 13h ago

Ok that is in someway very cute and cat like although I think it would also be terrifying.

u/WinterWontStopComing 20h ago

Have you not seen the bloody mess that occurs when two male elephant seals fight?

u/black-knights-tango 16h ago

Yeah, an elephant seal is just a giant mancubus. Leopard seals are nightmare fuel

u/BonsaiOnSteroids 16h ago edited 13h ago

Elephant seals can move faster at a beach than the average human can sprint. You should totally be afraid of them as they will just kill you because you exist nearby. Not even for food.

u/GandalfVirus 13h ago

Good to know!

u/ButtNutly 11h ago

According to a quick Google, elephant seals can move around 6mph on land, while the average human can run 12-15 mph in short bursts.

u/BonsaiOnSteroids 10h ago

Yeah, on asphalt or hard ground. Try doing that at the beach in sand

u/ButtNutly 9h ago

That's a great point I hadn't considered.

u/Betray-Julia 21h ago

These are two of the most violent and brutal creatures on earth.

Leopard seals are also up there on the intellgence scale.

u/MaynardButterbean 20h ago

Someone has never seen Pebble and the Penguin

u/Semblance-of-sanity 22h ago

Yeah elephant seals are probably the only kind of seal that can win against lepord seals.

u/LosToast 5h ago

u/Octavian_202 21h ago

Leopard seal looks like he’s missing a fin.

u/Acceptable-Glove5054 20h ago

Oh yeah didn't even notice

u/MorningMushroomcloud 22h ago

I'm....just...gonna...roll...over...here. There, ya happy now?

u/radlah_ateem 21h ago

Why they are on mute?

u/TenLongFingers 21h ago

For real I unmuted and was surprised they weren't screaming lol

u/radlah_ateem 21h ago

Yess, is they like communicate using brain?? Or some other energy? Or waves?? Omg thats so awesome

u/Smiedro 21h ago

I was also disappointed but I think it’s just cause the camera / mic is too far away. I bet they are screaming quite loudly.

u/radlah_ateem 21h ago

Maybe or maybe not

u/User7453 22h ago

u/User_Says_What 21h ago

Leopard seal:

I don't like it. I don't agree with it. But I accept it.

u/eltoratio 21h ago

The leopard seal seems smart enough to avoid losing its second flipper. Maybe it learned from another conversation.

u/NinaCR33 21h ago

Leopard seal is casually rolling away lol

u/TehluvEncanis 19h ago

Sometimes I roll away wailing dramatically, too, to give my husband space in the bed, lmao

u/WineAndDogs2020 22h ago

Sure it's not a yawning contest?

u/xxxmechashivaxxx 21h ago

u/meister_reinecke 17h ago

I keep forgetting that leopard seals acutally exist... kinda terrifing beasts - but also a bit cute?

u/Quirky_Reply6547 15h ago

Size matters.

u/gpnemtb 15h ago

Idk, it looks like the leopard seal rolled over.

u/asdf0909 15h ago

Are these creatures just clear evolutionary inbetweeners that show us how sea creatures once dragged their asses onto land?

u/yeeeteeey69 15h ago

“Barrel roll away, I’m outmatched”

u/burgonies 13h ago

It seems like they agree by the end of it

u/zakupright 13h ago

u/Kindly-Might-1879 21h ago

Love it when animals are named after other animals

u/compleximago 20h ago

The leopard seal unsettles me. It's just an evil seed on this earth.
