I've always been confused by this too. Back in the day when cameras were cumbersome I can see it being your only "proof" you met a celebrity. But with cameras in every pocket, with the exception of sports memorabilia, you'd think autograph hounds would have disappeared.

I lived in New York a long time ago and would run into artists all the time. I would just say “hey. I enjoy what you do” and move on. The idea of having proof I did it is the part i guess I don’t understand.

Yeah when you start to think about it for a second it's like, what does it even do for you? Prove that you met them I guess? Except not really because theoretically you could have bought it from someone else who has?

Buying an autograph from someone just seems weird to me. I’m glad these artists have a revenue stream. I’ve been a Trekkie for years and some of those actors live off the convention circuit. Honestly I might pay to meet them and tell them I’ve enjoyed their work, but an autograph (to me anyway) isn’t necessary

Redditors regularly comment on how they don't feel like autographed albums from the artists online stores are meaningful to them because they don't have a story.
They like to talk about how they got the album signed by the band before or after a show, or how they carried a record sleeve somewhere, saw the artist, and got it signed.
I'm adjacent to the music industry in such a way that I regularly deal with artists and acts in an incredibly off the record sort of way (think of me being the guy who knows what available produce and ingredient options are for Gordon Ramsey when he wants to create a menu at a new restaurant. I have nothing to do with the food, or making it, but I am going to be able to say what will or won't be available regularly for the restaurant based on my city's distribution availability), and I know FOR A FACT that most musicians and acts do two things:
- They call their fans customers, and 2) they view their work as work.
Because of this, I will regularly comment that 99 out of 100 acts that have been around for more than a handful of years (once the shine wears off) have no interest in signing customer's records, and more than that, they really just want to be done for the night, get back to the bus, and be done after a show.
I get downvoted every time for saying that.
I'm glad that artists are starting to speak out about this.
Hopefully it encourages people to just chill out and leave the acts alone.
They dont want to sign your record. They don't know who you are. They will never remember you. You're SUPER interesting story about how you waited for 9 hours or saw your favorite act in a diner and decided to be brave and ask them for an autograph is your side of the story. To them, you're some asshole who interrupted their lunch to get an autograph and they may have smiled, but inside they were super pissed because now their salad mixed with their Cole slaw and ruined it. You are just an obstacle in between them and their after-work plans.
EDIT: as mentioned, I get downvoted for typing it out, but the reality is what I said... which is the whole reason for the post.

Funny, I always thought they called their fans “normies”.
It’s kind of crazy though, no? When an artist hits a certain level of fame, it changes. You crave this type of interaction when you’re doing local pub shows.
But when you’re a struggling artist and you have people who like your music for what it is, that feeling is irreplaceable. I can see how signing stuff whenever and where ever is cool in the beginning, but I’m sure it fades very quickly.

I believe famous people shouldn't have to interact with fans in the street if they don't want to. They deserve just to be a regular civilian just like everybody else. I beleive an artist's job can more or less be just as hard as the average job and they can be just as tired or wigged out as the rest of us.
