How to Celebrate First Birthday?

Looking for ideas and suggestions on how to celebrate my kiddos first birthday. We're hoping to do some sort of smash cake and get some cute pictures, but I also want to do something to commemorate surviving this first year and I am coming up blank. I feel like we didn't celebrate anything in his first year and I don't want that to be the status quo. He was born in early October 3 days before my birthday, so nothing happened for that. We were still exhausted at Thanksgiving. Our 11 year old lab died 4 days before Christmas. I don't remember New Years. Mother's Day was bogarted by Grandpa.

Father's day we actually sort of celebrated. He got gifts and we all attempted an outing in our new car.

So now we're coming up on his first birthday and I want to do better. I want him to look forward to these celebrations like I did when I was a kid. The main issue we're running into is we don't have any family to celebrate with and no friends really either. I have no family on my side and his family is 2k miles away.

So how do you make holidays and birthdays special for your family? Are you able to make it special for yourself too? How much do you include the spouse on planning? Or is it mostly just telling them when and where to show up? lol

When our daughter turned one we did family photos and a smash cake of course. But we’ve decided instead of parties, to do family vacations. Over her actual birthday we celebrated as a family of 3 in Disney. We continued that tradition for birthday number 2 and have things booked for birthday number 3. While we travel a lot as a family, her birthday trip is really something special. It celebrates her but also us as a family. When we have another, we plan to incorporate the same idea.

Usually favorite foods. You pick a birthday dessert. And we try to do something fun that week. Beach or nature center.

We don't have family near us and I don't like the extravance of birthday parties. We do a homemade cake of the child's choice, their di ner choice and their requested gift on their birthday. Near that date we do a "birthday experience" as a family to celebrate. Past examples have been: Disney on Ice, horseback riding, snow tubing, behind the scenes a the aquarium, manis and pedis at a kid spa.
