Sharing / Insight 💡 Meditation is the greatest life cheat code I've ever found

Upvotes

It's wild to me that it's not a common practice in western culture. One 20-minute session and immediately I feel lighter. My mind isn't racing anymore, I feel like I'm actually here, colors are brighter, everything is more interesting, and at least for a moment the weight on my chest is gone. I need to do this every day, multiple times a day. It's so incredible.

Question ❓ Getting startled by loud or sudden noises when meditating

Upvotes

This has been an issue for me for some time. Whenever I am meditating, I get startled really easily by loud or sudden noises, and living in the city, this is usually unavoidable. Furthermore, I usually have to set an alarm when meditating, and when my alarm vibrates, that would often startle me too.

I feel that when I get so absorbed into the meditation, anything sudden would jolt me out of that frame of mind, and it is extremely unpleasant and as a result, this would also make me feel less relaxed towards the tail end of my session because I anticipate the alarm coming.

Do any of you have any similar issues and if so, how did you cope?

Thank you.

Question ❓ Meditating help.

Upvotes

I’ve seen it said that meditation is about quieting your mind and finding peace in the silence. I’ve also heard that it is about observing your thoughts as they come and let them go. Which is the proper way or is there another way?

Upvotes

So i was talking my walk outside and i have pretty bad health anxiety and this fear came over me i could feel it rise from my stomach to my hearth to my brain from my nick and i could feel all my body tingling like i had an aneurysm or something (thats why i have health anxiety i am afraid of having an aneurysm ) so most days when this comes over i run home and i begin to worry and check my self but lately this past week i have been meditating alot like alot and trying everything so there i was panicking and i started breathing and repeating the manta in my head and my mind would ask question and make me feel so afraid, questions like are you still aware and headachs and stuff so i just sat on a bench and when i catch myself not focusing on the mantra i label what i am thinking about which wach hard because i was panicking for like 30 min but i only noticed my self drifting into bad thoughts only five times and when i labeled and didnt fear those thoughts i felt this great feeling of relief i still didnt manage to beat the entire panick attack

I have never expected to say this but i am hoping for the panic attack to come again so i can practice more

Now i am totally fine 😁

Question ❓ Its much harder for me to meditate at the end of the day. Any tips?

Upvotes

I find that the best time for meditation for me would be in the morning, after a light breakfast and some coffee. On many dyas (not everyday), I feel that I am able to relax well, focus well, and get that occasional blissful feeling.

On the other hand, if I try to meditate in the evenings, especially after a day of work, I find it really difficult to get into the right state of mind. I feel like I have to go do my stuff after 5-10 minutes of sitting.

May I know why this is so, and if there are any tips to work with my state of mind at the end of the day?

Thank you.

Sharing / Insight 💡 Meditation in Tea

Upvotes

When I was feeling bored, I began studying the Way of Tea—from brewing methods, water volume, and temperature to the choice of tea, utensils, and ways of tasting. The deeper I went, the more I realized something fascinating: initially, I only chased after flavors or beautiful techniques shown online. But as time went on, I came to understand that enjoying tea actually begins the moment we prepare the utensils, all the way until we wash and put them away.

For me, brewing tea makes gathering energy and spirit feel completely natural. The stillness that arrives during tea tasting is always deep and long-lasting.

Recently, anger flared up inside me when a seller sent the wrong package. Even though I observed my own mind and body—aware that anger was arriving and understanding why I was upset—it remained there, still burning within me. That feeling of frustration is never pleasant. Bringing that discomfort to brew tea, anyone might think the tea session would be far from enjoyable. But things unfolded in an unexpected way.

Throughout the process, I simply gathered all my energy and spirit into every movement. As the aroma wafted out and the sweetness seeped into every cell, the anger quietly dissolved without me knowing when. By the time I snapped back and noticed, the irritation had long passed.

Perhaps, I have touched upon the Tao of a tea drinker.

Question ❓ Tipps to avoid derealization?

Upvotes

I've heard meditating regularly can induce states of derealization and depersonalization. As someone who has experienced derealization in the past I don't want it to come back but I definitely want to keep meditating as it has been really helpful, are there some precautions I could take that could help me avoid it? Are some forms of meditation more likely to induce these states of mind?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Question ❓ Can meditation ever work for me if I have allergies?

Upvotes

I have already tried to meditate to regulate my mental health, and most of the time it just leaves me more stressed than before. Why? Because I have allergic rhinitis, and every time I focus my attention to my nose, I feel it’s itchy and need to scratch it. So I try not to do it and focus on my breathing, but it just leaves me more stressed and anxious. I hate focusing on my nose

Question ❓ How do you stop yourself from thinking too much?

Upvotes

Hello,

So, I've been doing meditation on and off for a few years. lot of my therapists recommended it when I have a panic attack to help calm me. It wasn't until recently that I've been really trying to meditate along with stretches. However I've found myself in a struggle

Normally in the guides that I follow online. They always say to clear your mind. But the moment there is any sort of silence I go off on a thought tangent. Either a song will get stuck in my head, or ill get lost in thought about somthing that's coming up or bothering me

I've tried forcing myself to focus on my breathing, but I still drift away. I've tried counting, and somehow I still end up thinking about random things. Because my brain goes on this tangent I'm never able to actually relax or go into a meditative state

Help would be appreciated on how to stop thinking so much

Sharing / Insight 💡 Practice meditation just enough so you get into the ballpark

Upvotes

Not everyone needs to dial in meditation by every nuance that meditation has to offer. Practice meditation enough so that you arrive in the ballpark of meditation. Meditation will then catch ahold of you and begin to create its own momentum in your life. Then, if you want to fine tune your practice you can look into the technicalities. But the foundation remains the same. Coming back to yourself. Coming back to the breath. Coming back to the anchor of the present moment.

Question ❓ My experience with mindfulness meditation

Upvotes

I am an absolute beginner. I'm a depressed emotional trainwreck and I'm looking for anything that might help me. I decided to try a guided mindfullness meditation, specifically "Mindfulness Daily with Tara Brach & Jack Kornfield" and I did the first 3 days without any issue. Some of it was a bit confusing and wishy-washy for me but it wasn't bad. But the 4th day meditation "Attitude of Friendliness" made me extremely emotional and about halfway through I was just crying uncontrollably. It just made me realise the extent to which I hate myself and don't want anything good to happen to me. I'm not sure I can really continue at this point. Maybe I just need to get therapy or something first.

Question ❓ Returning to meditation after years of failing … advice?

Upvotes

Hello everyone! I have a lot of questions so feel free to only answer the ones you’re inclined to.

A bit about my background: I’ve struggled with intense anxiety and nervous system activation for my whole life after struggling with a very difficult childhood where I had to take care of my very sick, emotionally abusive mother and had to be very hypervigilant from a young age. I struggle with thoughts of mortality daily as well so I’m trying to come back to the present.

This childhood history has had me gripping to life/control in a way where I have developed social / moral OCD and now at age 27 I cannot live this way anymore in constant fear and addicted to my phone. I also am a teacher and musician in LA so I feel a daily break from the hustling city would help. I cannot move to nature right now although I am excited for the day I can.

I always knew meditation would be good for me. However there are so many types it over complicated it for me. How do you know which method to pick?

I practiced TM since I was 17 learning at a school. However, whenever I would do TM, I’d be so concerned with doing it “perfectly” and for the required two 20 minute sessions per day, that I would stop doing it all together.

Not to mention, I was always in the “clearing the gunk phase” which was uncomfortable. So I’d stop.

Long story short, I know meditation would benefit me so I’m going to start again today with 20 minutes using my mantra letting my thoughts come and go like they’re on a river and try to do this every day.

I wonder if 20 minutes is the right amount? When should I increase the amount? Do you agree with a mantra? I am resisting guided meditations because I think they’re a way for me to maybe not fully let go and I’ve done many of those over the years.

I think I know how to meditate at least in a beginners way. My problem lies in the letting go of it has to be a certain way? How do you allow yourself compassion to return when you skip a day or more?

How has meditation changed your life, the way you relate to it?

I remember one time I was meditating and I just got this feeling of bright white light around me that freaked me out and so I jolted myself awake from the meditation. Any advice with that? I’m almost afraid I’ll leave my body sometimes. Was letting go of control / surrendering hard at first? My ego is afraid.

I love the way meditation in the past made me suddenly so present, when TM was going well and I was in the “honeymoon phase.” But how do you continue after the novelty wears off?

Sorry for so many questions! Feel free to just answer the ones that you’d like.

Question ❓ Need the benefits as soon as possible.

Upvotes

I know it may sound immature and desperate but I want the benefits of meditation sooner not 2-5 years down the line.
All the beautiful people here talking about how they have been mediating for 5, 7, 12 years and it feels a little demotivational.

My mind is a chatterbox, 90% of my life problems would get resolved if I could calm my mind down.
I have been mediating for 10-15 minutes since the last 2 weeks but for some reason it doesn't seem enough.

Question ❓ Is meditation just not bringing your subconscious thoughts into your awareness?

Upvotes

Is meditation just not bringing your subconscious thoughts into your awareness?

Is it not the normal experience to have a silent mind as default and live as the observer pretty much all the time? I dont have that thing where you don't have an inner voice or can't visualise either as I can do both of them.

Question ❓ Pressure in jaw and pallet

Upvotes

While meditating I often experience intense pressure on the roof of my mouth, especially behind my back teeth and radiating up into my jawbone. It feels like my mouth is made out of metal. This started during self reiki but I now experience it outside of meditation.

Im not too disturbed by it but just wonder what it is and if theres a way to "clear" it or should I just accept it?

Edit: I just released tension throughout my body in meditation and this tension in my jaw has expanded up into my head. There were also weird pulling sensations and now it is localized in my left cheekbone. It feels like a giant brace that extends down into muscles in my body as well. Im afraid to allow it to do what it wants in case it is Kundalini.

Question ❓ Binaural beat meditation?

Upvotes

Did you try Binaural beat meditation which trigger your alpha, theta, gamma brain waves mimic formal deep meditation state?

Did you find it helpful?

Did you combine it with your formal meditation session?

How did you practice it? What is the product you use?

Spirituality Not asleep but not conscious?

Upvotes

I’m a fairly new meditator and have recently been doing meditations where I’m setting the intention to tap into the akasha. I’ve noticed in some sessions that im leaving my body??? I don’t really know how to explain it but it’s like I’m blacking out. I am not asleep I think but not awake? Time is definitely going by then I just come back into my body. Again, doesn’t feel like I’m waking up but coming back into consciousness. I don’t remember anything during those periods and when doing normal meditation I can remember things. Has thing happened to you? What phenomenon is this?

Spirituality What level of meditation do you think I may have reached?

Upvotes

I experienced a very deep state where ordinary thoughts seemed to disappear I got kind of absorbed, along with a strong experience of radiant light/energy.

Radiation especially through the center of my forehead. I felt a strong sense of peace and stillness, however I still had a littlebit of awareness of I’am and what’s happening like I witnessed it.

I still repeated the mantra inside but very subtly.

Once I had ended my meditation and returned to my normal waking state, my worries came clinging back to me. I was unable to bring about a liberating transformation, although I did experience it briefly.

Would this be considered savikalpa samadhi, nirvikalpa samadhi, or something else?

Discussion 💬 What's "Wrong" With Your Meditation? You're listening to a "Crazy Karen" and you keep believing her stories... 🎭

Upvotes

So many people get completely stuck trying to meditate. They find themselves trapped in a frustrating loop: fighting the mind with the mind. They feel overwhelmed by an unstoppable torrent of thoughts, experiencing anxiety, guilt, or the feeling that they are "doing it wrong" because they cannot achieve absolute silence. They try to observe, but they feel sucked back into the noise, believing that their awareness is being tricked.

If you feel this way, what you are "doing wrong" is simply believing the "story" around it. The "madwoman of the house" —as the mystic Teresa of Ávila beautifully called the mind— loves to identify with stories. In this case, it’s the story of the "poor soul overwhelmed by thoughts they cannot stop." By feeding into this, the mind simply strengthens the character (the ego) in the play of life.

Shifting to this new perspective will naturally cause those thoughts to lose their power —effortlessly, without you even realizing it. The mind loves to gnaw on these stories like a bone; stop playing its game.

Think of a tree in autumn: when it loses its leaves, it doesn't create a tragic story around it. It doesn't grieve, it doesn't get sad. It just is. The goal is not to have zero thoughts —which is biologically impossible— but to change how you relate to them. This isn't just about having more or less concentration, although this shift in perspective will naturally improve your focus and concentration.

As Eckhart Tolle famously writes in The Power of Now, "The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive." The problem is that you aren't using your mind —it is using you. It has taken over your identity, and you end up serving it instead of it serving you.

Stop believing the stories of the madwoman of the house. Free yourself from the tyrant and crazy Karen. Why do you keep believing her stories? Stop letting the "Crazy Karen", your mind, ruin the present, Here and Now.

Conclusion: What's "Wrong" With Your Meditation? You're Listening to a "Crazy Karen" and you keep believing her stories. 🎭

Question ❓ How long to get the deep floating feeling?

Upvotes

Hiya, I’ve mediated before and I’ve had two feelings. One is a light floating feeling where it feels like I’m kinda floating and the other one is a deep floating feel where I fall into it. I’ve gotten back into it and I need the deep floating feeling because then I feel like I hear voices and I’ve been told that is psychic and I need to talk psychically with folk for a task.

Question ❓ How do you observe your breath without automatically controlling it?

Upvotes

Most meditation instructions say that you should simply observe your natural breathing without trying to change it. However, as soon as I pay attention to my breath, I seem to influence it automatically.

If my breathing feels shallow or too short, I instinctively try to make it deeper or extend the exhale. If it feels uneven, I start trying to make it smoother. At that point, I find it difficult to tell whether I am still observing my breathing or deliberately controlling it.

Does this happen to you as well? Do you simply accept that observing the breath will initially change it, or have you found a way to remain aware of it without trying to “breathe correctly”?

Question ❓ Breath sensation problem

Upvotes

During breath meditation, what did you do if your breathing sensation is too subtle and light to notice and focus? I normally slipped into thought and thinking because my breath sensation is not vivid to maintain awareness.
