Film/Television The Lamentis-1 Nexus Event completely breaks the apocalypse rules established in Pompeii

Hey everyone,

I’ve been rewatching Loki Season 1, and the logic behind the Nexus Event on Lamentis-1 makes zero sense based on the exact rules the show established two episodes prior.

The Pompeii Rule

In Episode 2, Loki explicitly proves to Mobius that you can do anything in an apocalypse—release goats, shout about the future, throw candy—and it will never create a timeline branch. Why? Because everyone dies anyway. If the future state of the universe remains completely unchanged, no ripples can form, and the TVA monitors register zero variance.

The Lamentis Contradiction

In Episode 4, Loki and Sylvie are sitting on Lamentis-1, waiting for a giant moon to crush them. They have no TemPad, no escape plan, and are seconds away from complete annihilation.

Then, they hold hands, form an emotional connection, and suddenly the TVA monitors spike wildly into a red-line Nexus Event.

Why This Logic Breaks Down

A lot of people defend this by saying, "It was a cosmic paradox! A Loki loving another Loki is a fundamental anomaly in the timeline!"

It doesn't matter how paradoxical or crazy their connection was. If they turn into space dust ten seconds later, that emotional connection has zero physical impact on the future timeline.

An emotion doesn't alter physical reality. If two people die in a guaranteed apocalypse, their feelings die with them. The rest of the universe proceeds exactly as scripted, meaning no future ripples exist. By the TVA’s own hard logic set in Pompeii, no future ripple = no branch.

Unless we write it off as He Who Remains artificially faking the spike on the TVA monitors so Mobius would pull them out, the writers directly violated their own rules just to force a dramatic scene.

Am I missing something here, or did the show completely hand-wave its own established sci-fi rules for the sake of the plot?

There's many interpretations but the one I like is that the event was them dying not the holding of hands. The timeline was laid out in a way so that they reach He Who Remains.

Two emotionally healthier Lokis also change the math equation on what they can do with their magic and luck…like suddenly getting rescued.

Yes it’s circular but that’s part of the show.

I think it needs to be read as: all the laws and rules of the TVA exist solely to allow He Who Remains to manipulate the timelines and the multiverse as he desires. If he needs the TVA to notice something happening even during an apocalypse, then they'll notice it, even if it SEEMS to be a paradox in their understanding of how the system works. Because that's all we're shown, how they understand the system to work, not how it actually works.

This is basically what happened. B-15 even asked Mobius if he had ever seen a line like that before. They didn’t create a nexus event he who remains made sure they found them at that exact moment

While it can be called somewhat lazy, He Who Remains does in fact say he wrote it to be this way.

I always thought this was the moment Loki became self accepting through his love for Sylvie, and that this particular event was large enough to have ripples throughout the entire Sacred Timeline, not necessarily just this branch of the timeline.

Loki would be groomed to take over for He Who Remains, so you would think he would theoretically have the ability to create this large of an impact on the entire timeline.

We see that in the finale Loki and Sylvie have to join forces to tame alioth. Perhaps, even if they didn’t know it, them embracing in an emotionally fueled moment amplified both of their powers enough that maybe subconsciously something was happening that would’ve caused a branch.

Even if that doesn’t work, the argument could be made that HWR intentionally flagged that moment as a branch because he “paved the road” for them to get to that point, which would have included that moment.

There's a couple ways to look at it.

1) Their death was itself a timeline anomaly that could not happen.

2) Their combined powers and the pressure of their impending room would unleash ultra strong magics that could alter the outcome of that apocalypse.

3) HWR or Ms Minutes triggered a false alert

First you must understand the rules. It's built off of What IF something happened. A lot of apocalypses no what if's can happen. That is fine for tva and one dude form anther timeline to visit one and screw off and leave before they die. It says no branches happen.

What happened later is proven that theory wrong. You have 2 beings the same beings from 2 separate timelines. In a place that is dying. In a universe of infinite what if's two trickster gods who have escaped death many times. It creates the off chance of possibility.

No matter how finite their deaths would have been. All they had to do is create a situation that would trigger a possible splintered timeline. They did and it worked. They singled a strong energy beat that said a branch was going to happen. What that means is something was possible that we do not know.

I kind of hate how inconsistently the show treats time travel but the way I've reconciled it in my head is that the rules as stated are actually tva bureaucrat rules, not literal mechanical rules, and also he who remains is kind of making up the rules to shape the timeline how he wants

So the rules are a little arbitrary to begin with, and are based on ulterior motives as well, so ultimately the logic behind them isn't real

You reconciled the actual plot and canon in your head there’s nothing to be upset about. That’s exactly how it works

I don‘t know why everyone thinks that the Event was them falling in love/connecting/having a cringe moment. Why would it be if they would be dead a few seconds later.
The Nexus Event was them almost dying.
Because HWR has planed to meet them.

That’s a good point, the stakes were way higher than just a romantic moment. The way they handled the Nexus Event really does make you question the established rules.

Look, if you Reeally really think about it. The ending of the loki series makes zero sense. Even with all the knowledge we know about timelines, the tva and how HWR died and timelines were unraveling... that ending scene looked hella cool... but... it seem to make sense when you look at it from very very far away. But if you really think about it, that room, that machine, the timeline.. how it manifests into that thing.. and then it becomes strings that latch on to Loki... it makes... zero sense.

Or even pruning a universe. Why does it only drops little tidbits of the universe into the void.... and not the..you know.. entire universe?

But writing time travel is hard. Because.. it creates problems if you think really hard about it. Like how steve rogers returns stones. How the avengers travel back in time to change things, without changing things. What sets off a branch timeline.. what doesn't.

So. i think... you really have to let some of these things go.

It actually makes perfect sense.

The entire universe is pruned.

The NexUS Event between Loki and SyLV was Love, their eternal souls entangled, this changes the eternal flow of both of their souls, creating chaos, and new future timelines throughout the reincarnation cycles.

It’s the thing you disregarded. Two Lokis messed everything up.
