Film/Television Destin Daniel Cretton reveals that including Bruce Banner/Hulk in ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’ wasn’t a mandate from Marvel Studios. “It made sense to our movie to have Hulk ... We had to request and Kevin [Feige] let us do it.”

This was the best looking Hulk of them all.
•
u/GreyBeardEng 1d ago
It was great, he was actually kind of scary, as he should be
•
u/SpyroESP 1d ago
I haven't honestly seen Hulk that scary since the Helicarrier scene in Avengers.

BND was a great example of how to tell a story within a shared universe; you don’t include everyone (or even name-drop them all), you merely include those characters from the vast toy-box who compliment the story, and accept that other characters are merely off doing their own thing while this particular emergency is happening.
•
u/Antrikshy 14h ago
I’m so glad Frank had such a major role in the movie. From the trailers, I was convinced he’d only be there for the opening scene with the tank.
•
u/EnjoyTheMovie_You2 19h ago
I will agree with that, well said, but tbh the entire thing seemed forced to me. Like there were way more pressing things I wanted them to spend time on, namely Ned and MJ. (Like the three of them together) Again, I agree that it wasn’t bad by any means, it just felt like they thought the movie needed more action or something, which I don’t think it did. One man’s take.
•
u/Over-Analyzed 15h ago
But that would’ve felt forced too. You can’t overwhelm people and cling too tightly to them because you remember how things used to be.
•
u/StableLopsided8919 7h ago
Yes, using characters important to the story of the previous movies is forced. Let's use the killer Spider-Man should want nothing to do with
•
u/TheCapybara9 1d ago
It's not like Hulk was doing anything. They took all his leftover plotlines and gave them to Sam so might as well give him a cool scene with Spidey instead.
•
u/Bar-Cold 1d ago
Not all of em. There’s still she hulk and his son, which it looks like they banished to the shadow realm
•
u/ChildofObama 1d ago
They can’t follow up on that story cuz of CGI budget required and cuz it was a “throw it at the wall and see what sticks” plot line in a Disney+ show,
at a time Disney is reportedly not happy with Marvel Studios’s spending, might’ve cancelled Wonder Man for tough talk about Marvel Studios budgets.

Kinda bummed they decided to introduce skaar that way. That could’ve been its own movie with Skaar crash landing in earth and going on a rampage, Bruce stressing out thinking how to defeat this new hulk, introduce the hulk busters that Bruce helps create, they capture skaar and he turns back into a child, Bruce realizes he’s not a monster jsut a scared kid, Bruce becomes the hulk once again to protect the kid, etc.
So much potential just thrown away from a 3 second cameo gag

Yup, its just sad that Hulk wasn't there in Hulk: Brave New World starring RedHulk and the Leader ft. Falcon America and his wingman: Falcon
•
u/TheCapybara9 23h ago
I always wonder about that. Would it be really that impossible to get Hulk a movie? Or are they just planning on trying to get the rights back to Hulk eventually so they don't wanna make the IP too successful?
•
u/frockinbrock 18h ago
I thought Marvel/Disney actually had the Hulk usage rights fully back now? As far as I know they can do whatever they want with movies & shows at this point. Except they maybe can't use actors/characters from the Bana Hulk movie, and there's some theme park stuff they can't do.
I could be wrong, but that's how I thought it settled. Maybe it's a gray area enough that they're afraid to make another true Hulk movie?
I just assumed they don't know what to do with him for a movie.•
u/One-Hat-9764 16h ago
Universal Studios also get like most of the profits for movies or something. I forget what it was but I know they get money from something if they ever make a hulk movie.

The cameos were all satisfying for me as they all drove the narrative.
I like the line where she said “Hulk and Spider-Man are quite similar.” Then Banner says “trying to fight a war within” regarding their dual personalities. Trying to suppress one over the other.
This movie felt like the story came first and the cameos came second. Really liked this a lot.

The cameos were all satisfying for me as they all drove the narrative.
Yeah that's the part that really surprised me. This movie has like four major Marvel guest stars and only one of them felt like "gotta have that MCU synergy" (Yelena). Hulk, Punisher, and especially Jean felt like they were here for THIS story and not to set up future stuff, even if I could see the seeds being planted. I was really impressed.
•
u/Over-Analyzed 15h ago
Especially with Yelena, I feared she would get involved and overwhelm the story. But nope, she was just a resource.
•
u/ChildofObama 1d ago
I think Marvel Studios decided Smart Hulk wasn’t sustainable, is too much of a finale to Banner, that there’s no story to tell there besides him cameoing for a few science jokes,
so they’re ushering back in Savage Hulk, probably will explain it in latter projects as Banner did the merger without Hulk’s consent.
•
u/Redmangc1 1d ago
I think hulk was fine with basically everything until "now". In she hulk banner still had the inhibitor, but it seemed minor as all of banners things were also Hulk accommodating. By the college nothing is hulk sized, and its implied that even when banner talks about not needing to control, he clearly is controlling.
Banners character in these films has all been about control, he controls when hulk comes out, he controls when hulk goes away, hulk took control then never leaving and then not coming out. By end game they work together but its still banner in control, and he takes and takes and takes until hulk got his chance
•
u/GreyBeardEng 1d ago
I'd say it definitely worked, that scene played really well for both Spider-Man and Hulk.
•
u/Cultural_Comfort5894 23h ago
Making Banner & Parker the creators of the tech to control mutants is crazy work
And I’m here for it
Giving Jean her own story independent of Charles and SCOTT!!! is genius too

While it was cool to see Hulk again, this plotline did feel kinda like they wanted to do Lizard originally but couldn't for whatever reason (translation: Licensing Issues)
•
u/UnseenTardigrade 1d ago
I'm pretty sure there's no licensing issue. They probably just didn't want to introduce a new Dr. Conners and Lizard in a movie that already ended up being almost 2.5 hours. Especially when Lizard was already one of the antagonists in the previous Spider-Man movie.
I totally understand what you're saying, and the Lizard could have filled the same role, but I think using the Hulk was the better call in this case.
•
u/PayPsychological6358 1d ago
I somewhat agree with this. I was just saying how it kinda felt to me, not that it was actually the case.
•
u/Altruistic_Eye_1157 20h ago
That’s true, but I think there’s a detail suggesting Destin actually intended to use Hulk from the very beginning.
He had already worked with Mark Ruffalo on Shang-Chi; in fact, that was the scene where the concept of the inhibitor bracelet—which would later be expanded upon in She-Hulk—was introduced.
Plus, according to Holland, his version of the script (which apparently ended up being the final one, featuring the "spider-puberty" idea) was quite similar to Brave New World, and that movie included Hulk.
So, I do believe there wasn't any sort of replacement involved; it was just Destin wanting to follow up on what he started with Bruce in Shang-Chi (not to mention that introducing Connors would take up time the movie simply doesn't have).

•
u/Sesspool 1d ago
Still dont understand why or how bruce down graded, how he healed his arm, and why the bracelet. The hulk felt very added in with random retcon. Peter could of learned what he needed by almost any plot device you could make up and you chose this.....
•
u/Cultural_Comfort5894 1d ago
She Hulk was where the arm got fixed
•
u/Sesspool 23h ago
The what?
•
u/Cultural_Comfort5894 22h ago
“ how he healed his arm and why the bracelet “
I think it was using She Hulks blood that fixed his arm and he’s always been working on tech to control the Hulk
She Hulk show did a lot of world building for the MCU
NOT NECESSARY VIEWING
But some good stuff
•
u/Sesspool 19h ago
I guess, too bad they put it in a bad show.
Still doesn't make sense in the slightest if baner thought he couldnt go hulk again so he combine them, then what later decided this wasnt a good idea and went back to normal banner who cant control the hulk? It was a poor plot device never the less.
•
u/PraiseRao 23h ago
Cameos and special things like this work the best when they work like this. They wanted the Hulk for a plot reason the chip. It's not only core to the progression of Peter but core now to the future of the MCU as Peter fucked up by inventing the version he did. So for a narrative purpose the scene works. jean controls a rage monster. The chip based off his work helped Peter till Peter discarded it not destroyed it. It also plays into Damage control hyper analyzing tech and using it.
This movie was tightly crafted things that don't seem like they connect all connect. It was well crafted.
•
u/Altruistic_Eye_1157 20h ago
Well, this puts an end to the belief that Hulk was a replacement for Lizard.
After all, according to the writers, the only change regarding the villain was swapping Chameleon for Jean—and that was because Kraven was still in development.
Plus, Destin had already worked with Mark Ruffalo on Shang-Chi (in fact, he came up with the idea of Bruce having an inhibitor), so it makes sense that he would go straight to Hulk rather than considering Rhino or Lizard.
•
u/TheRealBenReilly 20h ago
The hulk could have been the lizard and dr Connors instead, not that I disliked the hulk in BND, but it could have worked without him too

Hulk's role would've been better suited for Lizard or Doc Ock. Thats what makes me upset about NWH. It was nice to see the previous versions again but it ruined the chance to have genuine MCU versions of those characters. And going forward we will notice more things changed that would've suited the characters used in NWH but they were used for nostalgic cameos for a cash grab rather than saving them for better stories.
•
u/NeverSettle13 18h ago
Just make the goddamn Hulk movie, they still have these goddamn ip rights problem?
•
u/Various-Push-1689 10h ago
Yep. Universal still owns it
•
u/NeverSettle13 10h ago
Why won't Disney just buy Universal, 🙄 It's so easy and simple, how did no one think of that
•
•
u/quirkymuse 1d ago
Translation: having an OG Avenger in the movie (and therefore the trailer) was a Sony mandate.
•
•
u/Scar-Excellent 1d ago
Why would it be a Sony mandate? They want full control of Spider-Man. Having Hulk there means Spider-Man movies can't focus purely on Spidey's own characters. The audience will feel it needs MCU synergy.
•
u/TrafficLegitimate937 1d ago
According to the contract with marvel they have to have a mcu character in there in order for tom hollands Spider-Man to stay in the mcu. This is also why homecoming had Tony stark, far from home had nick fury and no way home had dr strange
•
u/Scar-Excellent 1d ago
True but Punisher already fits this criteria. It's more believable to me that it wasn't a Sony mandate to have Hulk originally. Purely Daniel's.
•
u/ElricDarkPrince 1d ago
Made no sense because spider still didnt deal with issues of the black eye and loosing control stuff
•
u/ChildofObama 1d ago
I heard Sony begged for Star Lord, argued that the movie wouldn’t be profitable without Pratt, and they were convinced to accept Hulk as a compromise.
•
u/metrichustle 1d ago
How would Starlord fit in this? He’s in Missouri.
•
u/JTtheLAR 1d ago
I wonder if he still had a ship on earth? Maybe he would see Spiderman dealing with all this crazy shit on tv and feel obligated to check in on him out of respect for Iron Man. The reasoning would likely need to be convoluted.
•
•
u/JTtheLAR 1d ago
Sony just needs to shut up and let the checks come in the mail. They have proved time and time again that they dont know what audiences want. They just look at the selling power of big named actors. Hence, wanting Pratt. Im not saying Star Lord wouldnt have been cool. But still.
•
u/vivvav The Thing 19h ago
I'm convinced Sony doesn't give a rat's ass about making good Spider-Man movies. As long as they continue to put out SOMETHING they get to keep the rights and Marvel has to keep dealing with them and giving them money to make actually good Spider-Man movies audiences will go see.
•
u/MAKs_Brick_House 18h ago
I read that marvel has to use hulk every so often so they don’t lose his rights. Someone is lying. Shocker

u/unitedfan6191 1d ago
I wonder which of the established MCU big hitters will appear in a major supporting role the next live action Spidey movie? We’ve had Iron Man/Stark, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange and now The Hulk/Banner.
Thor? Deadpool? Ant Man?
