i put my lip gloss through the dryer HELP

guys I tumbled this load of laundry 4 times total because I kept putting off getting it out over the span of 48 hours. I am so lucky this didn’t explode. HELP 😭

do we think this could be salvageable? I am of course just throwing it away but I was wondering if I happened to do this with like a really expensive lip gloss if I would be able to part with it even under these circumstances… I have to believe I would be strong enough to just toss it instead of giving myself a deluxe microplastic lip mask

It’s like the bottom expanded to make up for the body of the container shrinking but I’m confused as to why the bottom expands and the top shrinks while the lid does nothing but still screws on perfectly 😭😭😭

the container is made of a thermoplast, and these are made with a mold and the plastic bottle blanks, which are usually small cylinders with equal thickness throughout the walls and the screw which is usually the same size as in the finished piece. the blanks get screwed onto a machine, they’re heated and the machine uses the pressure and the heat and shapes the blanks, basically blowing the bottle up like a ballon, and the mold gives it the final shape. if the bottles get heated, they often return to a shape similar to the blank, which is what happened here! the bottom is bigger because the product had nowhere else the go and the bottom is usually thinner than the walls.

My guess is that when the lipgloss melted, the high heat caused it to pool at the bottom and the heat transferred to the plastic making that specific part expand. I hope I’m making sense bhdhsjjs

from engineering class, my understanding was that some plastics "thermoplastics" can be heated and reshaped, some plastics thermosets, cannot. Hence why a lot of recycled plastic looks like plastic that's been shaved down and bonded together.

When he was little he went through a phase where he wanted to whack everything he could get his hands on with a hammer to see what would happen (while wearing safety goggles of course). If I remember correctly croutons were the most fun, raw potatoes were very disappointing.

I had this happen to me a few months back. Same butter gloss and it actually exploded and got on all of my clothes. Luckily they were house clothes that I lounge around in but it still sucked. I ALWAYS double check the pockets now

You need to thank the laundry and makeup gods! You are so lucky that it didn't rupture, and the container isn't so mangled that you can't read it, so replacing the gloss will be easier. I have been fortunate to have only washed a lip gloss or two, they fell out before the dryer but not after removing the color label lol which sucks because I take forever to choose colors

As someone who tragically killed her iPod nano by drowning in the washing machine, instead of considering whether a heated makeup product is usable or not (it’s not), my advice for you is to simply develop the habit of checking the pockets before tossing the clothes on the laundry bin, and again before putting them into the washing machine.

Don't use it if you're not comfortable but no risk of exploding! The plastic used for the container is a thermoplastic so it's easy to mold (and remold) when it's heated. So because of the way the container was made, when it reheated in the dryer, the container went back to a "lower stress" state which is the shrinkage you see by the lid/applicator, that was likely the shape it was originally extruded/molded at. The bulging at the bottom is likely because that's where the product pooled and took longer to cool down so it stayed warmer and more moldable for longer, so it took the shape of the product!

Most plastics are really stable and don't like breaking apart unless under REALLY high heat so the deluxe microplastic lip mask is unlikely. :)

I would kinda be interested to see what it looked like but too afraid to apply it after than many cycles. Only cos the packaging is not meant to go through heat that high and I worry of chemicals that leech only at high temp
