When I was a kid, my mom thought the sound they make was coming from the power lines being stressed and over used. Then, at some point, she started saying it was coming from "heat bugs". It wasn't until I was in my 40's that I realized the sound was coming from a cicada of some sort.
All that said, for me, their sound was as much a confirmation that it was a "scorcher" as the sweat rolling down my neck was. I honestly can't remember when the last time I heard one though?

If that surprises you then you should see Maine's biggest, harmless fly, the dobsonfly. I've seen them clinging to my screens at night, they're terrifying the first time you see one.

Ooh I’ve seen those. And yes, they are terrifying 😆 can’t they lay eggs under your skin if they bite you? Pretty sure. Could be wrong tho… 🤔

Skin yes, but usually only as a last resort. They prefer mucus membranes, eyes, ears, nose

You guys are mistaking dobsonflies with botflies. Dobson flies are completely harmless, adults don't even eat, they only use their big mandibles to mate. If they do bite it's too weak to break skin. They lay their eggs near clean water, sort of like mosquitoes do, but more picky.

My 3 year old sang a near-unintelligible love song to a resting cicada last weekend. It was the cutest moment. We all love these guys

I’m a transplant from Chicago. We had the 17 year brood a couple two maybe tree years ago and my favorite part was my dogs constantly wanting to be outside munching on them. I haven’t seen one yet here but I hear them alright.
