TBH it pissed me off so much that they killed him off. His death is ultimately not a motivation for anyone. Joyce doesn't mourn him after this season. Will doesn't really acknowledge him either.

Sean actually called me a Goonie once and I damn near lost my mind with joy.
Story: Worked for a con company. In the lead up to an event where Sean was appearing we couldnt find any decent high res shots from the Goonies to use for the 8x10s we provided for people to get signed.
I decided that wasnt acceptable and busted out my photoshop skills to make one, combining a few stills from the movie.
At the event Sean asked someone where the image came from cos he had never seen it before. They told him I did it and he flagged me down to ask me about it. I told him why I did it and he said "That's the Goonie attitude. You are such a Goonie!".
And I spent the rest of the event on cloud nine.

I’m of the goonies generation as well. Rudy, goonies, he’s amazing….but he will always be Samwise the Brave to me. I didn’t see his other characters that entire trilogy.
Real question though, did you? Because at first I saw Mikey in Rudy but then got into it. But for some reason Sam was separate. If I saw Mikey that whole film in my brain, it would have really been hard to watch. Maybe I just needed a Goonies rewatch closer to the films. Sadly, we didn’t own goonies on vhs so that was for tv or friends houses.

If you haven’t, I highly suggest reading his autobiography, There and Back Again: An Actor’s Tale.
It’s about his acting career as a whole, but focuses mainly on his experiences filming LOTR. He comes across as a needy little pissant in a lot of his LOTR stories (like being upset with Peter for not allowing Sam to be an expert swordsman against the Nazgûl because Astin didn’t want audiences to think he - not the character - sucked with a sword).
But he’s very self aware about it all and acknowledges his mistakes and shortcomings in the book, which I respect a lot. He comes across as an almost painfully normal dude lol, complete with anxiety and confidence issues, and is earnest to a fault. But he never comes across as anything other than well intentioned, even when admitting his most obnoxious behavior.
Most people wouldn’t include such stories, or would paint them in a more appealing light. But Astin fully embraces the “here’s a story where I was dumb and how I groan in embarrassment when remembering it but also learned from it” angle. I finished the book liking and respecting him as a person a lot.
