mod post Israel/Palestine discussion
After some mod discussion…
Posts about IWI guns, or accessories from Israeli manufacturers (or sometimes even posts about completely-unrelated topics!) quickly become a discussion of Israel/Palestine politics. There are plenty of more appropriate places to have those discussions on Al Gore's internet. Comments stronger than "I'll never buy IWI" will be removed, and users will potentially be banned after repeated offenses. Stick to talking about the guns.
This will be folded into the "topicality" rule in the near future, but this sticky post serves in the stead of that change.

training Wife's first range day with her own gun
Thanks to everyone who suggested 22s for my wife to get. She ended up buying a Smith and Wesson 22x and we went to the range today to break it in.
This is probably her third trip out in the past couple years (Including the safety classes the family took when I got my first gun) and she did really well!
There were a couple leftover targets on the backstop and she called her shots on some of the corner targets and hit them all!
She has the bug now. She's talking about going back after dinner

gear The problem with large safes…
You think you have plenty of room, and then all the sudden you don’t. Now I need an even bigger safe, and you know what’ll happen then…

guns “Load on Sunday, shoot all week…”
“Oh, I’m a big fan of the Litchfield. It’ll lay down plenty. Fourteen rounds, no fuss at all. Stop ‘em right in their tracks; sure comes in handy!” - Roscoe Brenner, Tumbleweed Gunsmith: Red Dead Redemption II
My Henry Repeating Arms New Original Model 1860 in .45 Colt…AKA, the Litchfield Repeater from RDR2 for those lovely nerds out there.
166 years later, Benjamin Tyler Henry’s legacy lives on with these centerfire conversion rifles in .45 Colt (Also offered in .44-40.)
Cimarron, Uberti and some others also produce these rifles but I settled on the Henry for its immaculate flair and polish. I wanted a statement piece. A year or two ago, for my birthday I ordered this and I’ve been so impressed since that I switched from shooting .38/357 western guns to .45 Colt outright.
It is more expensive and the OAL/casing length has to be shorter than some modern .45 Colt for this particular rifle, but honestly? It’s so worth it.
Shooting this rifle is truly an absolute pleasure. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.” This won’t win a speed-shooting medal, but it is an experience unto itself.
Shot some benched and standing today, about 60 rounds or so. I had so much fun. My girls in my shooting group joined me and we all did some groups at 50 yards, just for fun. Holdover was about 3-4 inches high at that distance using the combat irons (ladder folded down,) groupings were reasonable.
Next time, we’ll try for 100 yards! I need to make time to take her out more often, honestly.
This rifle reminds me that sometimes? We just need to have fun! We can still challenge ourselves and have a good time with old school guns. I had such a good time yesterday, I love my second family in shooting sports so very much and I am truly fortunate to have met them all, to have them in my life!
Oh, and yee-haw! 🤠

guns New(ish) gun day! Walked in looking for a .357 snubbie, walked out with this instead.
First Glock I've owned in a few years. What can I say, it just spoke to me.

gear First build is back from coating and I love it
Posted a while ago that I had the urge to learn gunsmithing and I just got my first build back from coating!
CrN on the slide/frame and AlTiN on the grip and small parts.
Please excuse the machining marks on the serrations, I did not have access to good polishing equipment and the mill I used to cut them wasn’t the best. Not bad for $2300 right?
Next build will be a hybrid (island) barrel!

guns Primary 90%, Secondary 100%
My late-stage capitalism set up. Currently saving up for a YHM Turbo K RB suppressor. After that I’ll pick up an H2 buffer weight, Sprinco Blue, & a partisan disruptor. Projected to be complete my year’s end. They’re definitely not top tier, but they’ll go bang.

guns The Spare Parts Race Gun
Knowing that I am an obsessive competition shooter that is getting close to 100,000 rounds through her main competition pistol a family member came to me awhile back and tasked me with building them the best possible Steel Challenge gun that I could given a budget of $300 and whatever I had laying around and this is the resulting Ruger Mk IV build.
The "Spare Parts" Gun (pics 1-3)
- Upper: GunBroker Sourced cheapest possible Barrel + Rail: $50
- this could have been cheaper, VQ sells factory Ruger pencil uppers for $30 but woulda ended up spending more mounting a rail or milling for an optic
- shipped and transferred to me by my club's FFL (free)
- Bolt: Original Volquartsen Bolt from my personal build: FREE
- retails at $320
- has some wear on the handle and VQ sent me a new Lite one when I complained
- Lower: Original Polymer Lower from personal build: FREE
- basically impossible to buy anywhere
- Internals: Volquartsen Accurizing Kit: $108
- Trigger Free option at Midway
- Trigger: Volquartsen Trigger: FREE
- spare from personal build
- cracks at about 2.25lbs
- Optic: Amazon Crap ($20)
- family member picked it
- i face palmed but its working
- 6 used mags: $100
- not pictured
- club friends had
Total Spend: $278
She's an ugly little thing but 1000000x nicer shooting than a standard Ruger Mk IV, although obviously being able to throw $550-600 retail in spare parts in free definitely helped with keeping that budget down... but she'll race alright! and keep up, too!
Can def pull Grand Master times with this gun, but it's a hell of a lot easier and more consistent with Volkraken for obvious reasons haha
---------------------------
Bonus Stuff:
- Volkraken, Ruger of Theseus (pics 4-6)
- Potato, Kiefy's Pig (pics 7-8)

discussion My backup to my backups backup.
I love shotguns. Started with a Taurus GC3 couple years ago. Up to 7 guns now and my two shotguns have a special place. They are funnest to shoot IMO.

question Leave No Trace: What's the best portable backstop to retrieve slugs?
I was going to shoot in the desert and I was thinking what's the best portable backstop to retrieve the slugs?
I was going to shoot on a blanket to catch the shells. I'll be shooting into a remote hillside so there isn't a safety issue with any strays.
I was thinking sandbag or piece of wood. Or even foam rubber. Any suggestions?

training Looking to put together a mutual aid group
Hey comrades. Looking to put a mutual aid/prep network in NYC’s northern suburbs. I’m part of a Signal group of like minded folks but we are spread a bit far and thin. NNJ, Rockland, Westchester is ideal. DM if you’re interested in discussing.
Also, and “fed” accusations will be lol’d at.
Just looking for folk I can count on.

guns Finally……I can tell them to GTFO my lawn
I’ve been wanting a double barrel for literally no other reason other than they look cool af for years. I’ve never owned a shotgun either. Actually I’ve never even fired a 12 gauge anything before either. Hopefully it doesn’t kick too much but I’m usually ok with pain.
Anyways I color-coded my shells. Clear for buck, red for bird, and green for slugs. Got the polymer version in case SHTF and I have to walk outside in the rain. There’s a tree stump outside my house, I might finally be able to get rid of it.

question After a day at the range ...
My newbie question of this week. Spent the day at the range with a club group. The 9mm casings were flying all over the place, there were 30+ shooters at all the outdoor lanes. The organizer had a bucket of D-Lead wipes that I used, came home and looked into lead contamination.
- How concerned should I be if I am shooting weekly (I am trying to get over shooting weakly) about lead?
- What do you all do to protect yourself?
I want to do the right thing by my wife and me (no kids at home anymore) but do I have to keep separate shooting clothes and shoes? Change at the range before I get into the car? Toss all my stuff in the washer with chelating solution before I walk in the house?

Whitebox .22 LR 500 Round Brick.
…Not beating the allegations of quality control. Lol.
For $60 per 1000, I wasn’t griping but got a good laugh from this.

guns How's My Setup?
Actually pretty new to AR15's and got this at a pawn shop for (I think) a pretty good deal. Looks like someone put a lot of work into this. How's the setup? Should I change anything?

guns Steyr Modelo 1912 Chilean contract Mauser
Not sure how many non original parts are on it but it’s got a standard length original rear sight but it’s a short carbine. Turn down bolt. Still a 7mm mauser so not one of the 1912 conversions to 7.62 nato.
Neat rifle, needs a lot of work but the bore is solid. Will update with cute progress pics as we get my old shop back together

gear Solution for shitty red dot screws
I’ve lost count of the number of red dot screws I have stripped, and yes I am always using a torque screw driver and screwing to the correct specs.
To that end I reached out to some industry experts and was told the solution is Mcmaster screws which have a crazy shear weight.
For $50 I bought 4 of the most common screw sizes I’ve needed and started replacing them, and I think this is it. They went in perfectly and not a hint of any issues.
If you’ve had similar issues, this is the solution.
