Admin [META] Kind Friend Updates / Chat GPT and Yo[u]

Upvotes

Hello Community,

I hope you are all doing well, or atleast a little better than yesterday. I wanted to put a post up around some recent changes and behaviour in the sub.

r/KindFriend has been privated.

Kind Friend was originally created as a sister sub to Kindvoice to handle more friendship orientated requests while Kindvoice focused on emotional support. Recently it seems to have caught to the attention of a number of bad actors. The posts had been gradually trending to a younger audience and I was becoming increasingly concerned that it was facilitating people looking to take advantage of these members. As such the sub is currently privated to prevent access and any further risk. I would encourage those seeking purely friendships to try more established subs such as r/makenewfriendshere or r/needafriend. This behaviour has thankfully not transferred over to r/Kindvoice.

Previously friendship posts had been against the rules of KindVoice, although not strictly enforced given that a lot of the time a good friend can make a world of difference to someone's current state. We intend to continue the current status quo in this regard and deal with friendship posts on a case by case basis as it makes a minority of posts. I would highly encourage users to use more focused subs for this if seeking purely friendship. If you are reaching out for a friend because you feel lonely or want to improve social skills, that post still has a place here. Just please be aware many offerors are volunteering their time when they can and should not be considered a permanent support placement or lifelong friend.

Chat GPT Usage

Over the past few months ChatGPT started recommending us as a place for lonely users or those who were feeling down to seek human contact. Alongside this we saw a dramatic increase in the number of bots, monetary requests and ChatGPT generated posts. We have literally gone from a few bans a month to a few a day.

- Accounts with less than 5 comment karma or less than 3 days old will now be caught in a filter for approval. I appreciate some people don't want to post here on main so a mod mail will be raised for each submission caught in the filter so they can be approved.

- Chat GPT is NOT against the rules currently HOWEVER PLEASE BE AWARE that many people come here looking for a human voice. You may believe that in writing an answer via Chat GPT you sound more articulate or better at supporting. In reality the message it often conveys to the looker that they can't find someone who is even willing to use their own words. Comments may be removed if they feel too robotic when the person is looking for a connection.

Final Notes

I would love to hear any community feedback on these points.

A huge thanks as always to the people that donate their time to help others. Look after yourselves where you can.

-AJ

[META] Seeking C[o]mmunity Feedback on Rule 2

Upvotes

I hope all of the Kind Voices out there are having a wonderful day and that my message finds all of the Lookers slightly better than they were yesterday.

This post is to gather some feedback from any willing community members around rule 2. Recently I have been rather lax on it's enforcement given r/KindFriend isn't hugely active (although it's had a surge recently) however I am aware there are a number of other very popular subreddits that fill the same niche so I want to ask your thoughts:

- Do you mind friendship based posts on this subreddit or would you rather keep them to other spaces?

- Do you feel requests asking for daily supports fall into this category?

- Any other thoughts you may have.

Looking [L] 22F, just want to lament about life with someone

Upvotes

I went through something deeply traumatic a year or so ago that I think completely reworked my brain chemistry. It feels like my default setting now is complete numbness and boredom, possibly anhedonia. I think what helps is talking to others, I realize I really enjoy other people's company. Recently graduated, unemployed, but the future doesn't feel too bleak. I'm interested in language learning, beautiful scenery, hiking, working out, writing. Let's just talk and vent casually about how life has been going.

OFF LIMITS: don't even think about messaging me under the pretense of anything romantic/sexual.

Looking [L] 23F I’m in residential treatment after my 7th suicide attempt

Upvotes

Hey Reddit. So what do I even say? I recently got out of the psych ward for my 7th suicide attempt. Since then I’ve been in an amazing residential program and now a php. Some days I miss home but most days I have a lot of fun and I am learning more and more about myself everyday.

I don’t want the title to alarm you. Since being in treatment I’ve been compared to a cupcake, bubble gum and everything in between. Basically I’m a big cuddly sweetheart that just happens to have a background of trauma and a silly brain, but I try my best to keep my troubles to myself and put a smile on as many faces as I come across. I’m really a big kid at heart

I believe my strengths are my openness, kindness, creativity, love for learning and being extremely self reflective and excited/willing to admit when I’m wrong.

I have been working on finding reasons to stay on this floating rock and letting myself accept help when I need it.

My new mantra has been “Be passionate about your purpose!!” I’ve beat death 7 times!! I’ve decided it’s my sign to stay. This new mantra has really been keeping me going.

When I’m not in my therapy-based classes I like to explore, dance, listen to music, practice my drawing, color, do puzzle books, and most recently; do grade school workbooks to brush up on my math skills (who knew simplifying fractions with no calculator would take so much brainpower??)

So where do you come in? I’d love to make connections from people all over. I am open to pretty much any questions. My goal is to connect with someone who would like to voice chat because I prefer that wayyy over texting. Despite the title, I refuse to make anyone my “online therapist” and try to always stay positive in my interactions. I’m not here to be a sad blob. I’m here to share the highlights and cheer you on for each and every accomplishment. Big or small! Let’s connect?

If you don't have something to get off your mind, I can talk about anything from astronomy, sociology. philosophy, geopolitics to penguins practicing prostitution, Romans using urine as a mouthwash, dolphins getting high, and why the office is better than modern familly (community tops though)

What's a song/artist that's stuck in your head currently? I'll go first, Fade into you by mazzy star and I'm only sleeping by the beatles.

I don't feel like myself anymore [l]

Upvotes

I don't know if what I'm feeling is stupid or silly, but lately I just don't feel like I'm doing well anymore.

I've cut off a lot of people because I've been way too sensitive these days. Everything feels darker, and I feel like there's something building up inside me, but I don't know when it'll become too much.

I'm just tired. I can't even sleep properly anymore.

Looking [L] I scream and yell a lot due to abusive parents which made my voice sound disgusting on calls/audios. How do I fix my voice now? Is there any surgery for fixing voice?

Upvotes

I always wondered why my voice sounded so ugly whenever I heard a recording of my phone calls from someone or if I listened to my sent voice chats. From the past few days, I have realized it might be because from time to time I have had to scream out of frustration whenever my abusive parents abused me or tested my patience. Due to which, I had been promising myself these days that I won’t scream anymore no matter how harsh these circumstances get around me, all upon realizing why my voice on calls might sound so ugly and so off. However, I had to scream my life away after a long time just now after my patience was awfully tested again and now I feel like my voice has now gone through irreversible and irreparable damage. What makes it worse is that I was still recovering from a mild throat coughing from an allergy that I caught from few days ago, which naturally made me not even want to talk so much as my voice was still recovering from sore throat. But I ended up losing my patience once again because I was being wronged and ended up screaming, and this time screaming as if I didn’t care if I was going to get a heart attack or my lungs were going to fail and I would die. I screamed my chest away just now

I want to know if there is any hope for my voice anymore as I have a feeling I have done irreversible damage by this point and I could never sound like a normal person on calls now anymore. I’m a girl by the way. So my voice will never sound like a normal functioning girl anymore

Looking [L] I need a virtual hug and some reassurance after my 45th (F) birthday.

Upvotes

I turned 45 yesterday and it was nice, I felt loved by friends and family. Today though, I am angry with myself for my past self-sabotage. I spent my thirties and most of my forties (so far) being morbidly obese and avoiding the pursuit of a relationship because I felt that no man would want me. I did try to lose weight, but I was unsuccessful and I loved food more than myself. Over the last 2 years, I finally was able to lose over 100 pounds and I’ve rejoined the dating pool and that feels good!

But here’s the issue: through social media, I see old friends (plus a man who I really cared about) who were able to fall in love and get married and start families and it’s too late now, I’m 45 and I won’t get to experience getting married and having children with the love of my life. It feels like I wasted all of what were supposed to be my good years and now the only thing left to do is just exist unhappy until I die one day (don’t worry, I have no desire to end my life).

Now I’m just incredibly angry with myself for not trying hard enough during those years when I should have been in my prime, and consequently, losing out on some life-defining events that a lot of my peers were able to experience. Can there be happiness and pleasure in the second half of my life?

[L] [20y] [male] I feel lost, numb, and uncertain about my future after a heavy childhood and a sudden breakup. Just needed to get this out.

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I just really need a safe space to vent and maybe hear some kind words because I feel completely lost right now.
I had a very rough childhood. I grew up mostly with just my mom. Most of her partners were abusive—they beat her, and one of them almost killed her. At one point, she ended up in prison for six months. After that, we didn't even have a stable place to live for a while. We eventually found an apartment where we still live today, but my mom has become a heavy alcoholic. She doesn't work, so money is constantly a problem, and our fridge is often completely empty.
Growing up in this environment made me an introvert. I turned to video games very early on as an escape from the pain and reality of my life.
When I started high school, I got a job alongside my studies, which helped financially. Around that time, I also met my girlfriend. Our relationship wasn't perfect, but I loved her deeply and ignored the red flags because she made me feel truly happy for the first time in forever. I wanted to build a real future with her. But after a year and a half together, she broke up with me out of nowhere—literally overnight. Just the day before, she was texting me about how excited she was to be together, and the next day it was over. No real explanation.
It hit me extremely hard. Right now, I don't know what to do with myself. I have a job and I’m trying to find hobbies outside of gaming, but I feel completely directionless. I tried putting myself out there again, but I realize I don't even know what I want. I feel numb, unsure of who I am, and uncertain about everything in my life.
I guess I'm just looking for some perspective, encouragement, or just a friendly word from anyone who reads this. Thank you for listening.

[L] Just need to vent about this friendship breakup because it’s been hours and it still hurts like hell

Upvotes

Hi to the person reading this,

I’ll try to not make it long.
So basically, I think I just lost someone who had become really important to me and I honestly don’t know what to think anymore.

I had an online best friend, we got really close pretty quickly and talked basically every day for a whole month. He was affectionate with me in a way that honestly wasn’t always what I’d consider completely platonic. He’d call me things like “babe”, “honey”, “princess” and more, would reach to me every morning, send me pictures of himself, mostly of his gym improvements, make little flirty/innuendo jokes, ask if I found him attractive or if he was my type, and even joke about having a crush on me once when I sent him a picture of my face.

I never really thought of him romantically though, or at least I didn’t think I did until recently.

When I added him on instagram, I looked at his Instagram following (because I was simply curious, wanting to know what kind of guy he could be based on that. I tend to do that for everyone, not really out of judgment. Just amusement and boredom lol) and saw that he followed quite a lot of girls.

Well at first I genuinely didn’t care, I mean I thought I did but I quietly wondered why he followed that many considering how they all were different and probably were not family.

I just wondered, and tried to forget, thinking I was crazy for that. But the day after, right after he added me, I noticed that a new girl had appeared, and something about it just got into my head. Her account was private and she was in his followers (his account was in private too, so he accepted the request obviously). It didn’t mattered at first, thought he just accepted to have, like, more followers.
But my overthink wouldn’t stop and the day after, I saw that she accepted him back. I know I might sound insane right now… haha. But I started wondering if the way he acted with me was actually special or if he was just like that with a bunch of girls. I think the idea of being just another girl in the pile really bothered me.

Instead of talking to him about it like a normal person, I withdrew. I have a tendency to shut down when I feel unsure about someone and try to figure everything out by myself, so that’s what I did.

And eventually he kept asking what was wrong and I told him after a long day of ghosting. And honestly, I was way too harsh. I made assumptions about him based on his following and said things that were unfair. He explained the context behind some of the girls, I admitted I had judged him and apologized multiple times, but by then he was already really hurt.

He also became convinced that I must have romantic feelings for him because otherwise he couldn’t understand why I cared about his following. I kept saying that I genuinely didn’t think I had feelings for him, but after everything that happened, I’m honestly questioning myself now….

Maybe I was more emotionally attached than I realized. And maybe I liked the attention and the way he made me feel more than I realized.

…I genuinely don’t know.

The conversation got worse, he told me he felt disrespected and that part of him regretted considering me a close friend, and then he blocked me.

I apologized and I know I handled things badly. I’m not trying to excuse that. I just really wish I had communicated instead of withdrawing and making assumptions.

What hurts the most is that I already miss him so much, and I have this horrible urge to fix everything even though I know I need to respect the fact that he blocked me.
I guess I’m just trying to understand what happened and what I actually felt before I completely spiral over it. I know it’s only been a short time, so maybe I’m expecting myself to have answers way too soon, but I still can’t get over it and my heart hurts so bad thinking about it.

I know everything was my fault. I know that. I guess I was in a too confusing time of my life, and having many failed talking stages and a complicated relation with men… It made me ruin everything.

And the thing is, when we were arguing last night he kept telling me if I felt something more then friendship and that if yes, it could change everything and we could do something about his followings... I was in denial. I still don’t know if I just liked his attention or there was more. I hope and pray we could sort things out. I seen him looking at my profile on a different social media this morning, but that again… I don’t know.

Anyway, I feel so lost and empty everyone :(

Looking [L] What do people actually do after making mistakes at work? I need help.

Upvotes

I 23rd F made a mistake on 2nd Sept. I work at a hotel front desk and I'm in my second month of whole career experience. And that day was a hectic day with a total new system and a group check in. One of our guest checkout earlier than his actual departure day but I forgot to check out in the system not realizing until two days later on. It resulted me in some financial discrepancy that I might need to pay back. And just right after I informed my manager about it last night because today is my off and I wanted to feel a little lighter, my coworker called me this morning and says there's a in house guest in the system with balance that needs to be collected and when I check the reservation, it turned out the guest checked out yesterday. The reservation was made by someone else and departure date was set to today so he was not in the departure list I was clearing yesterday. But his room was checked in by me and for some reason I can't remember, I collected only four nights payment while the reservation was 5 nights. So his room picked up one night charge again. I just don't understand. How am I so stupid to make the same mistake twice in a week and I have no idea how to deal with the anxiety and the situation itself.

Hey! You want someone to actually listen to what you have to say? You can tell me anything you want. You can get that thing off your chest. I'd happily listen to what you have to say. I love hearing people's stories so I do care when someone rants/vents to me. This could be a short term chat or something long term and we can become friends too. Open to voice calls. 29M.
