Looks like they need the good ol brick

u/Nope-not-really 7d ago

Its super effective

(I've used this exact crosswalk it really does work)

u/QueenAlphabetties 7d ago

Omg me too! I used to just sprint it but now I don't have to have any panic crossing, Grandville really is super creative

u/Time_Seaworthiness43 6d ago

Carry one around with you when you're driving and hold it out the widow when someone's tailgating you.

u/ChaosRainbow23 6d ago

This just in! Man accidentally drops brick on interstate and causes massive 23 car pileup! More news at 11

Love the idea but change it to bright colored sticks for the bicycles.

u/Icy_Fish_2154 6d ago

Need the guy who wacks all the motorcyclists with a stick of they block the crosswalk.

u/AshingiiAshuaa 4d ago

You can say that again!

Yeah, carry a cane and jab it in the spokes

u/StandardUpstairs3349 5d ago

One of the advantages of being 6'4" and large is that bikers understand that I am the brick.

u/UTV4LIFE 5d ago

🤣🤣🤣

u/Firefly_Magic 7d ago

So if a car doesn’t stop, and you have to use the brick, are you charged for the damage?

u/QueenAlphabetties 7d ago

It's a foam brick, so that it won't be too heavy for people to grab. And no we are just using it to call for attention instead of them just fast driving through the cross walk, I think they added pedestrian lights there now

My pet peeve with cyclists.

No licensing, wanting to be both a pedestrian and a vehicle whichever it suits them.

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 6d ago edited 6d ago

Honestly this feels a bit systemic. Like, theres no signage for the cyclists, just the painted lines?

Theres no bollards by the crosswalk to visually seperate street crossing pedestrians from loiterers?

The bus stop canopy partially blocks the view for approaching cyclists in one direction.

Personally, i watch the video and it takes me a second to even visually identify the pedestrian. Its a high traffic lane. Bikers are more concerned watching the bikers around them then scanning for stuff like this. You need something to break up the visual field.

This isnt a crosswalk on a corner where traffic is being disrupted. I can totally see myself biking through that keeping my eyes on the guy in front of me and totally missing that the crosswalk even existed.

Also, some of the videos seem a little deliberate. Theres traffic in the far lane and theyre standing as far back as you could stand to signal you were crossing. Like, its pretty common for pedestrians to start to cross into the free lane and the approaching cyclists will then notice you as you start to occupy space in the road.

u/DepletedPromethium 5d ago

The highway code states pedestrians have right of way.

Trying to side with the cyclists who are ignorant of the highway code is terrible. There is no need for bollards as there are no cars present, if the cyclists cant see obviously big blocky white lines then they need their eyes tested.

u/GlitteringSalad6413 4d ago

Also a confusion regarding different rules and cultures surrounding this. No place in the usa really experiences this kind of bike traffic, and if they DID, they would immediately notice that the pedestrian always having the right of way breaks down as a rule. A signal or flashing light would be best here. All those bikes are actually doing the city a lot of good by cutting down on road traffic and easing demand for public transportation, and with this much bike and pedestrian traffic combined it needs to be handled completely differently. Judging the cyclists by American right-of-way laws is just ignorant though.

u/ukemike1 5d ago

So unless there is the likelihood of death then you can ignore traffic laws? That is a deplorable attitude.

A bike collision can absolutely hospitalize a pedestrian. Knock someone down and you can absolutely cause a fatal brain injury.

u/OVectorX 7d ago

They can break their bones and set them disabled life time tho

u/o7_HiBye_o7 7d ago

And could kill them. Sure, nit at the same rate- but a fist fight can kill. A slip and fall can kill.

I'm all for bikes doing their thing, but it is INSANE the amount of laws they break just in one trip from A to B.

Stop signs, street lights, crosswalks are completely ignored by most of the ones I see while working. They will just zip through an intersection like they are immune to death themselves.

BE SAFE PEOPLE.

u/Adam_Sackler 5d ago

And these are the same people that would ignore pedestrians while driving. As a cyclist, I always have to wait for a few cars to go past before one actually stops. (A cycle path with a crossing)

Cyclists shit on drivers, drivers shit on cyclists. Rude people are going to be rude. The vehicle they choose isn't going to change anything.

u/ThomasJamesRidgewell 7d ago

Yanks in the chat talking about "bad design" and the need for more signage. This is the UK and the rules regarding zebra crossings here are drilled into all road users and (fittingly) black and white. If someone is crossing, waiting at, or even APPROACHING one of these bad boys, you stop. The mob mentality cyclists are absolutely at fault here.

u/RollerDude347 6d ago

Ah, see, this explains it. I was looking at this like, "why would they stop though?" You're the first comment to explain that this is a standard road rule to me. I for instance, would be a very confused tourist is someone stopped to let me cross here.

I do still think it's a bad design. If these are tourists they'd have no reason to think they should stop.

u/Euphoric-Sun5317 6d ago

it's also the law in the us lmao. Where do you live that you don't stop at crosswalks?

→ More replies (19)

u/Orgy_nizer 4d ago

Exactly this. So many people misunderstand what the law actually says. People think that it's like the UK, where you have to stop if there's anyone even approaching a crosswalk, but in the US, what the law ACTUALLY says is that vehicles must stop for pedestriansalready crossing, but pedestrians are not allowed to start crossing until there is an opening in traffic.

If you're standing on the sidewalk and there is traffic coming, you have to wait. Then once you've entered the crosswalk, THEN traffic has to wait for you.

u/DuhRJames 7d ago

Lots of cyclists failed to adhere to the rules, however, in this case I'd say it's more on the city for poorly designing this crosswalk. There's obviously lots of bicycle traffic, yet this crosswalk has no signs or lights.

u/Ancient-Emu-8293 7d ago

Yeah give the cyclists a light they can ignore too.

u/Maximum_Boros 7d ago

The bad design doesn't do anything to mitigate that every single one of these cyclists is a piece of shit who should be ticketed and not allowed to ride.

→ More replies (8)

u/Ok_Water_4601 7d ago

This is the correct answer.

This is poor engineering and urban planning.

Give the bikes some rubble strips and that will force them to slow down.

u/Copious-Spirit 7d ago

Needs a flashing light pedestrians can activate.

Just like motorists: the cyclists are focused on their vector with tunnel vision; seemingly oblivious to anything else, or they're just following the leader and not making their own decisions.

u/MajesticDisaster3977 7d ago

Why is spending additional tax-payer money for blinking lights the only answer here?
There are marked and unmarked cross walks all over the place that don't have high-vis flashers or other assistance devices that need to be treated with respect.

Some bog-standard cross-walk signs are all you need here. They don't need to blink. They just need to exist, because there doesn't seem to be any other landmark except for the paint on the ground (which can be hard to miss at speed with other cyclists in front).
If this were at a street-corner, I wouldn't even suggest the sign, as those typically indicate a cross-walk anyway. It's expected.

If you make drivers/cyclists expect blinky lights at a cross-walk, they turn their brains off if the lights aren't blinking, or when they come across other cross-walks.

u/BruinBound22 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah exactly there isn't good design so let's all ignore the crosswalk!

It's extra funny because you hate cars for bullying cyclists when it's the exact same scenario as this.

I don't know where this is, but everywhere I've been, a crosswalk is accompanied by stop lights, stop signs, something to give pedestrians the opportunity to cross, rather than just trust that traffic will even notice them waiting. This just seems like poor design to me.

I understand why a lot of people don’t, but I just walk straight onto crossings in situations like this whether it’s bikes or cars. They know fine well that they’re supposed to stop and they can see you from far enough away to know that you’re going to cross. They always stop when they realise you’re not going to. If they look like they are going to try and blow straight through, eye contact is usually enough to tell them it isn’t going to happen.

u/Nervous-Potato-1464 5d ago

I do the same thing. I've had to jump backwards a few times, but overall it works as most people do see you and just don't want to stop.

u/Gwanosh 6d ago

turns out it's not the cars that make people behave like assholes, they just give them a bigger degree of feeling invulnerable (and more reduced visibility of what's in front of them). just look at reasonably tight walking paths and see how many people behave like they're the only ones walking it

u/BumBimBam00 5d ago

90% of bicyclists aren't aware about the fact they're driving something and the most of the road rules are the same for them as for cars. But the thing that it's hard to understand is how the fck can't they understand such a simple thing?!?

u/justerre 5d ago

Pretty good experiment to show that “not all” means about 93% of city cyclists are c*nts if this is anything to go by.

u/Agusfresin 4d ago

Know this crossing. Road design at fault here.

u/Party_Belt_3789 4d ago

The real blame is the infrastructure. You need pedestrian lights here if there is that much traffic just like you would for a busy street with cars.....

→ More replies (1)

u/ComplaintTop2008 7d ago

This never happens and most cyclists follow the rules of the road.

Or so I'm told. Constantly.

u/UncommonYogurt 5d ago

As a cyclist, 90%+ of them are assholes or just really dumb. I'm amazed every time I go out on a ride. Cyclists don't comprehend physics, rules and right of way. They just go straight with the narrowest field of view

Most of the time I'm the only one who breaks and looks on both sodes before crossing the road or giving way to pedestrians. Other cyclists just pass me with annoyed faces

And when accidents happen, they look really puzzled and can't understand the reasons why it happened

What happened to fucking waiting until the way is clear, giving you enough time to cross? They aren’t obligated to stop if there isn’t a sign or a light telling them to stop.

u/clutzyninja 7d ago

Most places I've been, you're always obligated to stop at a pedestrian crossing if there isn't a light

u/koknesis 7d ago

What country are you from? In most of the world marked pedestrian crossings unequivocally give pedestrians the right of way by law. Traffic is supposed to stop and give way as soon as the pedestrian is couple steps from the crossing.

u/MajorDan913 7d ago

On the one hand, this is amazing to see so many people utilizing bikes as transportation. On the flip side, there are also a lot of e-vehicles speeding past the pedestrians. If this was in the USA (obviously not from the excessive reliance on environmental friendly transportation as well as lack of obesity) many of these cyclists would be riding horizontally after a few determined pedestrians decide to cross.

u/dompipeinmi 7d ago

Should be a bar on each side of the crosswalk that comes up. That would put an end to their shit.

Here in the Netherlands you just start walking and the bikes will reduce speed or swerve around you.

The problem is that coming to a full stop on a bike sucks, so the etiquette is to avoid that at all cost.

The law of having to come to a full stop at a crossing is a leftover from car laws.

That said, e-bikes have ruined everything and it's now much more dangerous because the e-bikes are faster than the riders' brains.

My city has cyclists die every single week by being hit by cars. It’s of course sad, but as someone who’s never gotten in an accident, not even a ticket, I’ve almost hit many cyclists because they think stop signs at a 4 way stop don’t apply to them, even if another car is already driving through. Especially on the rentable bikes, people are essentially asking to get hit by cars.

u/grim1952 7d ago

I went to Amsterdam a few years ago and hate the cyclists, they don't give a shit about anyone, they think they're kings of the road.

It gets annoying trying to get out, having the one window where I could but a cyclist decides to go 60mph downslope with no intention to slow down, so I wait, they pass, and now I have to turn accounting for pedestrian traffic, potentially another group of cyclists, and cars going (then blocking me because they themselves got out of that situation and rather not wait another second in Seattle’s horrid traffic).

Based on my experience cyclists breaks traffic rules clearly the most.

The city could make a mint off this. Just stand by and ticket the bikes that don't stop for a pedestrian. They would hit their ticket quotas within an hour. The police could probably be the one standing there as the pedestrian because no one follows this rule.

I think someone needs to build a bridge there lol

I cannot believe you expect cyclists to follow any traffic laws.
