Black Mountain rises 4,139 feet along the Virginia border, sheltering species found nowhere else in the state, and its summit holds a disused fire lookout tower alongside an active FAA radar site tracking military and civilian aircraft. Once accessible only by permission from the landowner and targeted for mountaintop coal removal, it's now protected by the Commonwealth.
