Rant & Ramble My girl called off work again…
(Some chocolate cookies from Asia?)
Right now me (f23) and my girl (f25) share 1 car. My car… I came into this relationship with my car. We have been together 2 years now and she never got a car. Every job I’d pick her up or we worked at the same job with the same hours. This job she has now has made me lose my mind. We have almost the same schedule but it’s opposite if that makes sense. We share 1 full day off together. So when she works she has the car and when I work I only get the car for 2 days. for the other 2 days I work I have to find a ride to work while her whole work week she has the car. She told me not too worry because in three months she’ll have the money for the car but she keeps calling. In the last month she’s called off work 3 times so far. That’s like 450 we missed. It’s just super frustrating. I pay the car note and maintenance and insurance while she just drives it and puts gas and idk how my car is being driven. I just feel like I lost the one thing that felt like it was mine… she said she’ll pay this months car note I thank her for that but I really just want my car back..
Also! I’ve been the one actively looking for cars for her. I found a beater car that gets her from A to B at a good deal she declined it cuz the bumper had a dent

Stop doing this. Make her be the one to find a ride or uber.
I did this with a bf when I was younger & looking back I genuinely don’t know why. I was taking the bus for hours while he drove my car.
I bet getting her own call will suddenly be more important when it’s her who is scrambling for rides.
•
u/Peeeeyouuu365 Body By Uber Eats 18h ago
lol that’s how I feel. I’m like why am I riding with someone to work when I pay 500-800 a month for my car
•

Oh my god, you are paying that much a month and not getting free use of your car!!?!!? She’s a grown woman, she would have to figure it if you weren’t together. She can figure it out. Please take your car back!
•
u/That-Dragonfly-9723 Chaotic But Cute 18h ago
Ya seriously just take it back. It’s crazy she rejected a car too while you’re bumming rides. Maybe take a look at separating finances if you’ve combined them too.
Even if she has to pay for uber rides that’s not really your issue. That’s hers for not getting a car the past 2 years & rejecting good options.

Yeah this needs to be higher. You’re “spoiling” her to your financial detriment now but it could easily become your financial ruin.
People have to file bankruptcy over stuff like this.
•
u/El_Bookworm Pantry Gremlin 19h ago
It’s your car. Me and my girlfriend shared a car but it was always hers. I never took her car alone. It’s under her insurance. If she needed it, she got priority. You shouldn’t have to find rides to work when you own a car. She needs to take responsibility of her own life and find a way to work. The bus, an E-bike, uber, anything. I ended up getting an E bike, highly recommend.

This isn’t a good situation tbh :/ not like manifesting a breakup but you’re not married.. you’re the one on the car note and insurance. Everything falls under you!
My husband’s car is a 22 year old Toyota (so just saying it’s still reliable) but I have the nice newer car. He’s allowed to drive it whenever etc, but we are both on the insurance and we own it outright, neither of us is paying a note each month. He drove my last car when we weren’t married but he would never have commandeered it as his own!
If something happened to his car and we had to share mine that’s fine, but like… you shouldn’t be the one trying to find transportation to work….. it’s YOUR car!!!!!!!!!
•
u/Peeeeyouuu365 Body By Uber Eats 19h ago
I agree
•
u/katleessi Tiny Bodega Rat 🐀 18h ago
Rip the bandaid off girly. Just be like, “ya know… I kind of miss my car and the freedom that comes with owning it. I think you should try and arrange for transportation on the days that I have my car at work.” And then let her use it that one day if you’re comfortable with that set up!
You got this! It’s awkward but tbh shouldn’t be awkward with your gf. Now if it was a roommate who was doing that, yeah that might be awkward and cause tension. But it’s your gf so clearly she will understand. And if she doesn’t, she ain’t yo wife ✨🫶🏻
•
u/El_Bookworm Pantry Gremlin 18h ago
This! A good relationship can handle the discomfort of uncomfortable conversations that need to be had! She needs to tell her that it’s HER car, and that she needs to figure out her own transportation. This is so unfair to OP

This is how it should be. Either both of your names are on the insurance and you both contribute towards the payments on the car, or the person who doesn't have a car will nicely ask if they could use the car today.

Why does she get your car the whole work week while you find rides to your job?
Stop that. Make her problem hers and I bet you it gets solved. She hasn't bought a car because she doesn't need to when she has yours. And she won't as long as you let this continue.

She can get a job that is close enough to ride a bike.
I have a friend who is 41, never had a license and has worked up to 12 miles away and rode her bike. She actually now has a kid seat on the back for her son, now that’s she’s a mom 😂
Just saying, there are options. You have a choice in this. Sounds like you don’t think you do. Reclaim your car and make her figure out her own situation.

Why are you finding a ride? If you start work first, you can drop her at work early and then go to work, and then pick her up when she is done. If she starts first, you can drive her in, then go to work, then she can wait around until you are done or find her own way home. That’s how you share. You always have the car, you help her by giving her rides, and she suffers from not having a car by having to hang around before or after work, or finding rides. Right now, ya’ll are acting like it’s her car and you’re the one getting a favor by using it. Nope. Take the power back. It’s your damn car.

Sounds like she's going to make you be more like a parent that is going to need to lay down the law and refuse to put up with any of this anymore and make her get her own rides and go to work consistently to save up money.
What would she do about a car if you weren't together? She can do that.

No. Simple and clear. Nope. Nope. Nope.
I dated a guy for a while. He had a car when we met, it was junk but it was his. He wanted my car. Would ask to drive it - the answer was always no. One evening, he just took it. We were at MY place with friends and he offered to go pick up food. Took my keys, took my car. Did not ask. I was totally over him then. Not to be a selfish bish, but I worked for MY car and I paid for my car - and for the maintenance, insurance, and fuel. The hell with that. I did not take him to raise.

If she hasn't resolved this issue by now, after 2 years, she doesn't want to. I had a BF life this. He relied on me for things constantly, and I fulfilled his needs because I was his GF and of the mindset of "well I can't let him fail, I need to support him." At a certain point though it's not support. It's enabling. She is used to having you to solve these problems and is in no rush with no real plan to resolve the issues at hand.
And I think when you are in this type situation and your partner calls out of work frequently for no reason other than because they don't want to work, I think they are being incredibly disrespectful. She doesn't value your time and effort if she's willing to allow you to carry these burdens without picking up any slack herself.
You need to have a serious conversation about what you need from her - maturity, responsibility, and effort. Don't come at it from an attacking angle. Approach it as you are a team, and tell her you are unhappy with the current situation and want to put a plan that you both agree to that will resolve this. This includes agreeing on how much money is made, where it is allocated, a realistic timeframe/goal for the vehicle, determining what type of vehicle she will be getting, and an agreement on how transportation will be handled until then.
If she cannot follow through on her parts of the plan, then another conversation needs to happen that involves discussing how your goals and needs are not aligning, and if you guys are a good long term fit for each other. Because right now it's calling out some and sharing a car. But if the trend continues, she'll constantly rely on you to take care of her and be the responsible one that solves all of the problems.

Take it from someone who bought their SO a car after being done with the exact same nonsense, this is an absolute relationship killer. You’re over there trying to take care of someone who doesn’t give any fucks about how you’re struggling. She needs to help herself and not leave you without your car, that’s gotta be a firm boundary. And in case you’re wondering, no they did not pay me back either. Made two agreed payments and then said “I thought it was a gift” after I spent my savings to get us forward. This person is using you to survive, not helping the pair of you improve your lives.

When I wasn't working because I was in school I got a scooter and my wife drove my car. I had money from my former job to pay for most of the scooter and my wife paid the rest. When I started a job with a longer commute my wife used the scooter for a couple of months until we save enough for a down payment and got HER a newer car and I kept the older car. Equity and fairness is a thing in relationships.
Currently I drive my ~10 year old truck and my wife has an almost new car - after she drove her 12+ year old car until it became unsustainable. I plan to have my truck for many more years because I love it.

Ok so this person sounds like a complete user. “spoiling” someone to the extent that they’re impairing your ability to invest in your own future and have a reliable way to get to work isn’t partnership.
HOWEVER, if you are both willing to develop a healthy partnership, it could actually be time for her to reevaluate her career trajectory and consider jobs that will not require rides at all (walking distance, wfh, or being a homemaker, though I doubt someone who takes advantage of you to this extent is capable of being a competent homemaker). Because everything else aside it sounds like she makes minimum wage or close to it, and paying for rides all the time is gonna effectively mean that she’s bringing in like $50 a shift, without even considering all the other incidental costs of having a job.

Hey OP. My girlfriend and I share a car as well. Except I’m the one who uses it to drive and pick/drop her off at work or she ubers but it’s her car. The only reason I use it is because I have to take the highway to work and it would be expensive for an uber or lyft all the way up there. We worked together and bought a car for me that was a beater and a few months later and it crapped out so we are back at square one. I truly believe the only different between your girlfriend and I is that I actually feel terrible using the car so much when she worked so hard to get it. I would sit your gf down and just explain your side. At the end of the day, it is your car. You should help her look on lyft or uber and maybe work a time for you being able to pick her up. Or maybe every once in a while she uses the car and picks you up.
I’m sorry if none of this is helpful, I was just reading and it sounded almost exactly like my situation with my girlfriend and figured I could at least offer my experience

So those three days she called off, you got to have your car, right? I don't get why she has precedence over you when it's your car. Why don't you take back your car and she finds rides?

What the hell is going on here?
WHY are you allowing her to drive your car while you pay for the inconvenience of it?
She’s the one with no car. It’s on her to figure out how to get to work. It’s nice to be nice but don’t be a doormat. Take the keys back, tell her you need your vehicle and she is going to need to figure out alternative transportation like any adult with no car must do. WTAF.

If its your car, why do you only get it 2 days... I'd start there honestly

I don’t think she’s saved anything for a car

Girl. It’s YOUR car. She should be the one finding rides, not you.

If she gets in an accident in your car without any insurance and someone gets hurt, it will be life changing for you both in the very worst way.

1) Get a therapist. Someone in your life has told you that you don't deserve to be treated like an equal in your relationships. 2) Check your lease and find out how fast you can get out of this shared housing and relationship 3) Tell her sharing is over. She's welcome to borrow the car for the 1 day you don't need it but going forward you'll be using it for work.

She's mooching off you. Tell her to get her own damn car or she can leave. This is completely unacceptable.

Girl! This is a terrible idea. She needs her own car or she needs to find her own way to work!
