30 days of waking up at the same minute as a group of strangers. (Built my own wake-up group)

Upvotes

Alarmy worked on me for about a year. Also tried Wayk, PushClock etc. Didn't want to pay for an alarm app. I think my brain learned how to trick each of the alarm missions.

I remember the good old days when I had a goal, a person I planned to do things with, a life purpose. Now I live alone and start working around 10 AM. So no one to wake up with.

First I started pestering my friends incessantly to build a wake-up group like the 5 AM Club. It started so well, it worked for 4-5 days. Then one by one everybody quit. Then I found an accountability partner here but she stopped calling me after a couple of days.

I've been working as a senior developer for 7 years. So we built the thing I wanted (no AI slop, no bullshit copy of other apps, real value) and I've been waking up with it for 30 days. Two parts.

Missions. I put in 15 different real missions. (No bullshit that you complete and go back to sleep.) My favorite is the get-away-from-bed one.

Very simple yet effective as hell: get out of bed, move a set distance away (you can preview it here), stand there holding the phone for two minutes. If you put it down it rings again. Two minutes standing in the kitchen at 6am is enough, I'm awake.

There are other missions of course, it's the new standard of alarm apps now: push-ups, squats, brushing your teeth (it actually listens to check you're really brushing), a photo of a specific object. All of them want proof you left the bed. The difference: our app doesn't charge you for any of them. Free forever.

The best part: other people. Your alarm goes off at the same moment as everyone else's in the group and everyone has to prove they got up, live, in a 15 minute chat. It feels like waking up in hunter-gatherer times for me, collectively.

You can join a global group or a local one. Or create your own with your friends, or with strangers from the app.

You can follow people and set their wake-up method (imagine waking your friend with 30 push-ups). Believe me, you don't want to disappoint a stranger at 6am. Turns out that's the only thing that works on me.

No AI in it, no chatbot, nothing calling an API. Most of the 6 months went into making the alarm ring when the app is force-quit, the phone is on silent or the volume is down. An alarm that doesn't ring is worse than no alarm.

A challenge you: if you find a way to snooze, dismiss or turn it off by any method except deleting the app during the alarm, I will remove it from the App Store and never publish it again.

It's called Alarm Mate, iOS, in App Store review. Missions and groups are free, forever. No App Store link yet.

GetUp vs UnBed

Upvotes

So for some reason i keep seeing the same ads of two brands that offer forced out of bed bricks. It’s either unbed or getup and tbh they both promote the same thing and for me i would like to try one but im not sure which one is better. I keep seeing AI & bot reviews on both so im wondering if anyone has any idea which one is worth buying?

An alarm that rings at sunrise

Upvotes
I made a free Android alarm that rings at the actual sunrise where you are,
instead of at a fixed time. You can set it to ring exactly at sunrise, or a
set number of minutes before or after. It recalculates every night, so it
follows the season on its own.

No ads, no account, and it works offline.

It's in Google Play closed testing, so I need a few testers before Google will
let me release it:

https://rrnicolay.github.io/wake-at-sunrise-site/

Join the group, then accept the test — same Google account for both, or Play
won't show you the app.

Allarise - A Completely Free IOS Alternative to Other Popular Alarm Apps

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've seen a lot new alarm apps on this subreddit recently and wanted to share the thing I've been working hard to create over the last 6+ months. No cost, all features are unlocked, I just want to give back to the community.

Allarise was built for my extreme dislike for Alarmy's never ending ADS and don't even get me started on the cost. Another weird thing I really wanted was a way to integrate my smart home into the Alarm app on my phone. This give me really fine grain control and allows for automations based on if I'm actually up and around. If you've never heard of the home automation platform Homeassistant go check it out at r/homeassistant sometime!

I'll name a few features here that I think this community will love.

- Independent alarm volume
- Dynamic App Persistence ( more battery savings over typical alarm apps)
- Mission based alarms
- After alarm notes
- After alarm weather
- Sleep sounds
- Wake up to the radio instead of an alarm tone
- It's open source on github

Heres a preview picture https://imgur.com/9ue0qEh

The Allarise.app page has a bunch of helpful information if you're interested in this project.

Edited to add:
This project does use AI assisted programming, so if that is not you're cup of tea you've been informed 😄

I built an alarm that goes off at bedtime, and films you if you ignore it

Upvotes

Alright so I kept downloading all these wake-up apps. The push-up one, the math one and imma be honest, none of them worked because the problem was never getting up at 6:30am. It was that I was wide awake at 1am and then "trying" to wake up on 5 hours sleep.
So I built the other half. You set a bedtime. It goes off and won't stop until your phone is face-down and still for a few minutes. If you'd rather stay up, you record 15 seconds explaining why, and it keeps the video.
The archive is the part that actually works. Before you record a new excuse, it plays you last night's. Hearing my own excuse from last night makes it a lot harder to make the same one again.
Everything's on-device so there is no account, no server, and works offline. The videos never leave your phone unless you share them yourself and the more it builds up the more I'm like damn I really need to be better about sleeping on time haha.
I built this whole thing solo on AlarmKit, which shipped in iOS 26 and made this possible at all. Happy to answer anything about that if it's useful or any suggestions/feedback are welcome!

The only method that's worked for me

Upvotes
  1. Buy a phone lock. it designed to keep you from using your phone and has a sliver at the bottom for you to dismiss alarm

  2. Set multiple alarms spaced out 1-5minutes apart

  3. Lock and set timer via phone lock the night before.

  4. now you HAVE to go through all those alarms. it's like a person waking you up constantly. I also had the problem of waking up before an alarm and turning it off. Or even alarmy pro I powered off the alarm before it rang. This is for people with no willpower

if anyone has an easier suggestion please suggest but I need it to be guaranteed alarm

How can I fix my sleep schedule and allow myself to be happy?

Sleeping up to 15 hours a day and still tired.

Upvotes

This is more of a vent as there's nothing I can really do except go back to the doctors yet again. Though at this point I'm not sure which professional I should go to. I keep bouncing between GPs, gastroenterologists, haemotologists and endocrinologists.........

I have a long history of low energy levels though their nature has varied. It started when I was 18 where I noticed that my body was just tired and I couldn't walk it to or from university for 40 minutes and would have to take a longer bus route instead.

Then at 19 I became practically bedridden for 3 months with daily and long-lasting headaches, extremely low energy and shortness of breath. I was given iron pills that seemed to work but a year later I discontinued them because of possible gastrointestinal side-effects.

After 20 I had a few years unmedicated where my energy waxed and waned. At 24 my energy levels began to dip again where eventually I needed 10 hours of sleep a day including a 2-hour deep nap in the afternoon, and would also try and sleep on my commute.

3 months ago, after 4 weeks of diarroea caused by antibiotics I totally crashed. I am now sleeping about 14 hours in total a day and still tired. Sometimes I get headaches that I swear last 2 entire days.

Throughout all this I've done 1-2 blood tests per year, visited doctors multiple times and tried a few medications. Each doctor tells me a different cause of my tiredness, mostly related to deficiencies like Vitamin D, iron levels, ferratin and thyroid. I've taken Vitamin D, iron pills and Levothyroxine though for the first two I wasn't on them for long since as I said the doctors have different views on what is causing my fatigue.

I've been on Levothyroxine for the past 8 weeks and my fatigue has not improved at all. Google says Levothyroxine takes 4-6 weeks to show effects but someone claimed that it might take months.

I'm really at a loss on what to do as the fatigue is really affecting my life and I don't feel prepared to go back to work (I work in a school).

Different doctors are interpreting my blood results differently as there is a difference between results that are 'in range' vs optimal numbers and if they cause symptoms or not. And of course each specialist goes with their own specialty. An endocrinologist ordered an MRI of my Pituitory gland in light of my history. Gastrointestinal disease like IBS or IBD may account for my vitamin deficiencies but surely not if I take vitamins in a concentrated, raw format like medications?

Slept 8 hours and felt awful, slept 5 and felt fine. Does the hours number even matter?

Upvotes

This genuinely messed with my head a little. I did everything "right," full 8 hours, in bed early, and woke up feeling groggy and low energy. Then a few nights later I only got maybe 5 hours, and somehow felt more human than I had in days. Made no sense and honestly kind of annoyed me, like why even bother tracking hours if it's this inconsistent.

Is 8 hours just a lazy stand-in for "good sleep," or does the number actually matter?

I've slept through three stacked alarms my whole life, so I built one you can only turn off by scanning a code across the room

Upvotes

I'm a genuinely heavy sleeper. Not "hit snooze once" heavy. I would turn off three stacked alarms in my sleep and wake up two hours later with zero memory of doing it. The problem was never hearing the alarm. It was that turning it off is a half-asleep reflex I can do from bed without ever really waking up.

So I made the off switch impossible to reach from bed. You pick a QR code or a normal household barcode (a sticker on the bathroom mirror, the label on your coffee tin) and put it across the room. When the alarm goes off, the only way to stop it is to physically get up, walk over, and scan that exact code with your phone. Try to silence it without scanning and it comes back. A few minutes after you scan, it runs a second check, because getting out of bed once doesn't mean you won't faceplant straight back into it.

I've been running it for a few weeks and it's the first thing that has actually broken the reflex, because there is no version of it I can beat while half asleep.

Honest question for the people here who have fought this for years: does "scan a code across the room" sound like it would actually get you up, or annoying enough that you'd rage-delete it by day three? I want to know before I build the next part.

Sleeping through several alarms from different sources.

Upvotes

Hi all. I’ve always had a very hard time with mornings. As a kid, I remember my parents sometimes used to have to pour water on me to wake me up even. As an adult now, I still struggle. I used to take clonidine to help me sleep at night due to insomnia, but it’s been about a year now since I stopped needing/taking it. I used to think that clonidine made it harder to wake up in the mornings, but I still oversleep. Albeit, not as often, but it’s getting really bad. In the last month alone, I’ve been 1hr + late to work already at least 5 times. I’m going to lose my job if I don’t figure this out.
I sleep usually 8 hours a night, but struggle whether I stay up late, go to bed early, or go to bed on time. I have my iPhone alarms set at the loudest volume every time, and don’t hear those. They get to the point where they stack up and I wake up with my screen full of all of my alarms, not making a sound. I have an alarm clock sitting across the room that is LOUD and it has a vibration component that I sleep with on my headboard. I’ve also tried the putting it under my pillow and I will still sleep through that. I’m not snoozing ANY alarms, just not hearing them at ALL.
I feel like something is wrong with me. About 2 years ago, I did an at home sleep study test. I don’t have sleep apnea, or heart rhythm irregularities, so that’s not this issue. I have a consistent sleep schedule and work schedule as well.
I’m not sure if this matters, but I do have Adhd and binge eating disorder. I take immediate release 20mg Adderall in the morning and 50mg Vyvanse around noon everyday. I take the Vyvanse at noon for the stimulant boost and to help curb appetite when I get home from work. I don’t think this is the issue as I am tired every night when it’s time for bed around 9:30, and can fall asleep pretty quickly.
I’m going to look into getting one of those alarm clocks that I can wear as a wristband. If that doesn’t work, I don’t know what to do. It’s so embarrassing coming into work late. It’s embarrassing that I can’t wake up to my alarms in the morning. I just can’t keep living like this anymore, and am at a loss.

How do you make strength training easier to stick with when life gets busy?

Upvotes

I’ve always wanted to be more consistent with strength training, but I’ve noticed that the hardest part is not the workout itself.

It’s everything around it.

After a long day, finding time to travel somewhere, waiting for equipment, or needing a full hour can make it easier to skip.

Recently I’ve been trying to make my training simpler.

Instead of complicated programs, I’m thinking about focusing on basic movements like squats, presses, rows, hinges and core work a few times a week.

I’ve also started considering doing more of it at home because removing extra steps seems like it would make consistency much easier.

For people who have managed to keep strength training going for a long time, what actually helped you stay consistent?

Not being able to get out of bed

Upvotes

Ever since I dropped out of school 4 years ago I spent basically my whole day in bed. I only really get up to eat, sit in the living room for 2 hours or go to the shops. I always end up in bed on my phone because there's nothing else for me to do all day and I have no motivation. What do I do?

We built an alarm app that forces you to scan your toothpaste to wake up. It’s officially live on Android and we'd love your feedback!

Upvotes

Traditional alarms are way too easy to snooze when you're half asleep. We got tired of sleeping in, so we built AwakenQ.

Instead of just blasting an annoying siren, AwakenQ locks your phone and forces you to complete a "Cognitive Mission" before it shuts off. You can set it to make you solve a memory matrix, do physical squats, or actually get out of bed and scan a specific barcode in your house.

We also added a gamified streak system with a Tamagotchi-style bear mascot that levels up when you wake up on time (and falls asleep if you lose your streak).

The app is officially live in Production on the Google Play Store right now. We are gearing up for our big Product Hunt debut on Tuesday (Sept 1), but we wanted to share it with the Reddit community first to see what you guys think.

If you struggle with the mornings, we'd love for you to download it and roast our UI or let us know what features you want next! Link is in the comments!

I realized my wake up problem was not (only?) light

Upvotes

Previous post: should_i_get_a_light_alarm

I live in Seattle, where this problem mainly occurs. I currently live in Atlanta for the summer, so the weather is completely different. Just the other day, it was raining kinda bad WITH sunlight! I had trouble getting up...

Now I think abt it, the school quartet in which I have the most difficulty getting up is during the crappy rain and gloom days.

Is rain the problem? I mean, with light I can sorta find a fix, but with rain, idk, man. My curtains and blinds are shut when I sleep either way, so what else can I do?

Alarmy took advantage of my unconscious self

Upvotes

Alarmy keeps popping up with an ad to buy a subscription to get rid of the ads. I was just trying to turn off the alarm, I have random missions to turn alarms off, I accidentally double tapped my side button while squinting at my phone and viola
Bought their subscription
Not gonna lie, the sound of buying something woke me up because I was like, wait what just happened. Then I see confetti and it saying my subscription is now active

I literally wish iphone alarms worked for me, cause I hate that I have to resort to alarmy to wake up in the morning. I’m so annoyed and feel taken advantage of, why pop up with a subscription ad right as my alarms are going off. It feels dirty.

I requested a refund, but I just hate the fact that I got taken advantage of like that. And yet I still have to use their app because my iPhone alarms won’t work or wake me up. I can’t afford to accidentally sleep in..
