I have friends that use “girlie” and terms like “girl math” etc who soak up current media trends without questioning it. It’s meant as a funny, silly thing but I find it irritating/degrading. This is a big thing in girl social groups (e.g., film girls, girls who run etc) in cities too. Everything’s so “girl” focussed and even though it isn’t malicious, it feels so heavily gendered and like there isn’t much room for actual individuality outside of heteronormative gender performance.

I’ve also seen a trend of women making videos like “I’m actually just like other girls and that’s okay” as a liberal feminist statement against the “I’m not like others girls” fad that lots of teenagers go through. When do we get to be grown women? I’m 22 not 14

I don't know about y'all ladies but being skinny it's just so hard to attain for me. I'm 5'4 so to lose weight I have to exercise 5 times and eat childish portions to lose 1 pound per week and repeat it for months only to fit the social norm. Like cooking low cal food and going to the gym takes all my free time and I'm tired of it. And it's not like I have much of a choice because when I gain weight people start treating me so much worse. Next year I'm starting uni and I fear I won't be able to find friends because I'm slightly overweight. And the beauty standard becomes thinner and thinner. And I gain weight 10 times easier than I lose it.

After seemingly exhausting the good shows here in America ( specifically after finishing smiling friends and the digital circus ) I've been trying to get into anime to find a similarly light-hearted series with possible character moments, however throughout my search for an anime to watch I've noticed a disturbing trend that most of it features some sort of uncomfortable sexualization, whether it be taking an entire minute or two of a 22 minute episode to sexualize a woman, sexualizing an underage character or even featuring some sort of incest or other such relationship just for the sake of it ( bonus hate-points if they romanticize it )

Because of the recent situation regarding AfD party in Germany, I'm getting into a lot of discussions regarding immigration. I've already got shouted on and ridiculed for pointing out that SA is not like a recent problem caused by migration and that it exists within our cultures too (by our I mean European). Specifically in Poland where I'm from, I think in our feminist movement there's a lot of critique towards polish (rape) culture which reeeeaaally upsets patriots who like to "protect" "their" women but do not really listen to these women when they tell them what they need to be protected from. Someone cited polish SA report statistics and compared them to Sweden to support a claim that Poland as a country is safer for women and we dont have as much sexual violence in Poland, therefore theres no rape culture. As if every person experiencing SA was happy to report it to the police that usually doesnt even do anything. Btw, at least until this year, a decent amount of polish judges did not consider sexual encounters with an unconscious person, including the ones where perpetrator intentionally used pills to drug someone, rape. There was a case of rape on a teenage girl where despite her verbal protests jugdes didnt rule it as rape because there was no proof of physical force being used. Or a case of group rape on a girl that wasnt considered rape by jugdes because she was drunk and "couldnt make logical decisions". We just changed our law to legally define rape as sexual act without consent instead of forced sexual act last year. I am super pissed off because of hypocrisy of the people I'm talking to, I feel like they do not really care about rape as long as the rape is done by *their people*. As if rape wasn't an act of violating someone, but violating someones ownership, like its only a problem when an immigrant does it but not when a person from their country/they do it. Same people who justified rape with hormones and "nature" suddenly care about rape statistics. (Polacy wobec..., 2007)

However, I'm looking for some information regarding womens situation and safety when laws such as those proposed by AfD, like closing the borders and deportation are being enforced. I want to know how they impact women that come from the countries that set these laws (non-immigrant), the immigrant women and women with immigrant parents. I am aware that Sweden actually registers the background of sex offenders and am aware of the limitations that come from trying to estimate the number of SA and so on on the basis of reports to the police. So I'm really open to any sort of commentary on the issue. I guess I dont really know whats like a classic feminist stance on this and why, and while I know feminists aren't a monolith I want to read some literature regarding this topic and hear your opinions. I dont want women to be raped by anyone. i dont want to ignore intersectionality and support something that further hurts women or hurts *a lot* of lower class women while helping *some* upperclass women or just hurts anyone really. I'm really thankful in advance for your responses.

I live in the UK. My local “lounges” (popular chain restaurant/ bar) has recently advertised an event called Pints and Pigtails which is an event aimed at dads where they can come along, drink pints and practice hairstyles on fake heads of hair. This idea seems to have become increasingly popular as I have seen many similar events being advertised across the country, specifically through TikTok with many people in the comments praising fathers who attend such events.

I became a mother 12 weeks ago and although I felt I was aware of the many inequalities between mothers and fathers it is even deeper than I thought. When I saw the event being advertised locally it irked me and really got me thinking deeply about the difference in events aimed at mothers and fathers.

Firstly, this event aimed at fathers entirely excludes the children of said father in the first place. Whilst lounges are considered family friendly, the promotional video used showed just males, no children present. The company that runs this specific event also only mention dads in their advertisement, no mention of brining your children along. So if the father is out at an event that excludes the child, where is the child, oh yes that’s right with the mother.

Secondly, why do such events aimed at improving the parenting capabilities of dads have to involve alcohol. But then events aimed at mothers are “coffee mornings”. I assume it’s due to the fact it is frowned upon to drink alcohol when caring for a child, and unlike events for fathers, mothers are actually expected to continue caring for the child and bring them along to the events aimed at mothers.

Then there is the issue of why the event is only aimed at men. Why is there the expectation that every single woman already knows how to perform hairstyles. Do men think women are just born with the knowledge of how to do hairstyles. I understand that some women learn to complete hairstyles as they grow up, as did I through watching YouTube videos, my own mother though only ever knew how to do a ponytail, I always wanted plaits especially the French and Dutch kind but it was always a ponytail. So I can see the benefits of these events as being able to give your child more advanced hairstyles can be great for helping them with their own self expression but why can’t it be inclusive and be aimed at both mothers and fathers.

I could probably list many other things wrong with such events but as a sleep deprived mother this will do😂 apologies that it is not written very well, again very sleep deprived and my baby could wake up any second so I have been rushing to get my thoughts off of my chest.

It would be great to have a discussion in the thread to hear other people’s thoughts and hear about any other events other people have seen advertised locally aimed at men and/or fathers that carry the same sort of themes of gender inequality.

You’re free to say it, obviously. But that freedom didn’t just magically appear. Women fought for the right to vote, study, work, earn their own money, choose their partners, leave marriages, and make decisions about their own lives.

most of my life being in majorly straight female friendships has been extremely draining. I never knew why or what that was. I used to cry a lot because of it and a lot of the same woman that use these terms are the same woman that I think probably would’ve bullied me back in the day because the reality is… there isn’t an “other girls”

Men do not hold that same logic whatsoever. The only time men ever have a brotherhood is when their friend or someone they know had something bad happened to them or did something bad. And I think that straight male friendships and straight female friendships are very similar. Only difference is one takes the opposite gender in it completely different way, but in the same way. Men think when their friend is constantly hanging out with women or with a woman that’s strange and women do the same thing, but this sort of mentality is extremely regressive and misogynistic.

When women are saying they “relate more to men” or just simply like men… they’re not thinking of rapist, misogynistic, murderers, and racist.

That’s like a parent saying you shouldn’t go out because XYZ (insert worst case scenario)

why can’t women think for themselves and have that make them genuinely just prefer male friendships more? that doesn’t mean that they hate women or they’re actively choosing to avoid women to be around men or that they don’t want female friendships.

It just means that they’re not forcing themselves to be friends with women if they don’t want to be around the women they’re around. I think of Nancy from the craft actually a lot when I think of this. At the end of the movie, she ended up, trying to kill one of her sisters in her coven as well as a lot of people because she “strayed away from the pact.”

I feel as though this is the mentality a lot of women use. “You’re not one of us so we’re against you” unfortunately a lot of these women end up just being alone for most of their life or turn into “loners” or “crazy cat ladies, etc.” which is also a weird ass term because they just don’t relate to other women and that is OK. We shouldn’t have to use our trauma and our negative treatment in society as the only basis of our likehood as human beings. we can advocate for things while also not tying it to us as people.
