Announcement What constitutes spam on this subreddit.

Upvotes

Reddit has site wide rules regarding advertising and as a moderator I have to uphold those when moderating this subreddit.

With that said, Reddit is clear about how to assess if someone is a spammer:

How do I avoid being labeled as a spammer?

  • Post authentic content into communities where you have a personal interest.
  • If your contributions to Reddit consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from, tread carefully, or consider advertising opportunities using our self-serve platform.
  • If you’re unsure if your content is considered spammy or unwelcome, contact the moderators of the community to which you’d like to submit. Subreddits may have community-specific rules in addition to the guidelines below.

With this in mind, the subreddit policy going forward will be that if more than 50% of your contributions (comments and submissions) is promoting a book or review course the offending contribution will be removed. Attempts to circumvent this will result in bans.

I have nothing against review courses and books. I used them to pass my PE and FE exams. This is a community for people to collaborate and help one another achieve their career goals. That includes things like asking questions about your practice problems, or the exam format/experience, and yes asking what people recommend to study. But that last one is not a license for your account's sole existence on this subreddit to be only mentioning ABC's review course. The 50% threshold is much more generous than most subreddits would use to moderate content but I feel this is an appropriate level for this community.

If you have any feedback please feel free to comment below.

Tips Seeking advice for my brother (FE Mechanical retaker, 6 attempts). How to break through the ~7.8 scaled score wall?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some realistic feedback and study strategies for my brother, who is preparing for his next FE Mechanical attempt in October. He has taken the exam 6 times, and his scores consistently hover just below the passing baseline (~7.8 out of 15 average scaled score).

Here is the link to the spreadsheet where his scores are broken down: FE - Google Sheets

To my knowledge, he is actively using PrepFE.

Questions for those who have passed after retaking:

  • Test-Taking & Prioritization: What strategy worked best for managing time between the first half and second half? How did you approach E&M if physics wasn't your strength?
  • Theory vs. Practice: Which specific resources helped you understand the underlying theory rather than just memorizing plug-and-chug steps? (e.g., PrepFE, Mark Mattson YouTube videos, NCEES Practice Exams, Islam 800, School of PE)?
  • Handbook Efficiency: What were your best tips for speed-searching the NCEES Reference Handbook under exam conditions?

Tips FE Civil Exam Tips

Upvotes

Hello everyone! I’m retaking the FE Civil Exam on October 16th after taking it for the first time on May 15th. According to the DirectHub Diagnostic Report Analyzer, I scored roughly a 53%.

After my first attempt, I took a mental break from studying for about 2–3 months. I’m now getting back into a consistent routine of studying every day and focusing more on my weaker areas from my first exam.

For those of you who have taken the FE Civil more than once, does anyone have any tips or advice for approaching the exam the second time around? I’m especially interested in how you structured your studying, what you did differently the second time, and how you avoided getting burnt out.

Tips FE mechanical engineering: Mechanical design

Upvotes

Hi all

I am taking FE test 12 days from now. I barely finished reviewing most subjects excluding mechanical design, ethics and material science and manufacturing. I guess I can handle the last two, but I am not ready to immerse myself on mechanical design ( it's not my favorite subject with all honesty). So if I have little time left for it, what do you recommend I study? Preferably topics that have high likelihood to show in the exam + easy to study and grasp.

On another note, heat transfer includes aloooot of eqns ( especially in convection section) , will I be examined on many of them? What specific topics of convection heat transfer I should focus on ( free convection, forced convection, boiling, LMTD, NTU, Heat exchangers, Condensation vapor) - a lot of these include many dimensionless number eqns , I am not sure anymore which one I shall use in problem solving

I very much appreciate your time and consultation

Tips Guys، this is it! I want to buy a course to prepare for FE civil.

Upvotes

6yrs out of college.

Finished Mark's videos.(was very good but doesn't cover all the small details)

Started Islam 800 BUT, there are a lot of questions that even after going through the solution, i cannot understand them and it frustrates me to the loint that i loose motivation completely.

This is because There are some classes I hadn't taken due to how the engineering shcool curriculum was in my homecountry., e.g I don't know about pulleys, incline surfaces, transportation etc.

Now, I am thinking about a comprehensive course to prepare me for subjects that I don't know.

**Am I going to the right path? Or am I wasting my money? If so please suggest anyone who has been in my situation

Thx in advance

Question Moving from AK to WA – How to get my E.I.T. certificate with a BS/MS in Civil?

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I passed my FE exam however I am unsure about how to become an E.I.T., I live in Alaska but I am moving to back to my home state of Washington in December.

I don't want to repeat any process and I'd rather just become an E.I.T. in Washington.

I have a BS and MS in civil engineering.

Does anyone have experience with becoming an E.I.T. in Washington State?

Thanks ahead.

Question FE Other or FE Mech?

Upvotes

I’m a physics/astro grad debating taking the FE for a career pivot into engineering. I love researching instrumentation/ hardware design and development for large scale experiments, so Mech FE sounds most relevant for that. However, I don’t know anything about the regulations/ standards that are on that exam, and maybe it would be better to do the Other exam to keep my options open?

Tips Key Equations (Meche)

Upvotes

Hi all,

I alike most others in this group am studying for the FE. I’m slotted to take the Mechanical FE the end of the month. In my studying and watching videos. I found a lot of the heavy hitter subjects such as Thermo, Fluids, etc. have key equations that the solution will use to find a missing variable or whatever it may be in order to find whatever the questions is looking for. These equations are usually very small (not a lot of variables) but are used all the time. Such as, m1v1 + m2v2 = (m1 + m2)v’ or Q = A1V1 = A2V2 or DeltaL - PL/AE or even the smallest of P=VI .

I know most if not all of these equations can be found in the handbook. However, with time ticking away what key equations do you think are valuable to have memorized to just recall and not need to flip through the handbook? Either because they are small conversion equations are used a lot or they are fundamental to the ideas at play.

Im asking this in regards to any of the mechanical subjects. What couple equations would you say are most key to have memorized for each subject? Again I know I don’t need to memorize anything but for time sake as well as my initial attack on the question it’s critical to not need to look up every single thing.

Hopefully what I’m asking makes sense, Thanks in Advance,

Upvotes

I'm out of school for 8 years now. I have about three months prior to my FE Electrical exam. I bought the FE practice exams from ncees website, two volumes, 50 problems each to study and practice. Will this be enough?

Thank you for all suggestions.

Tips Need Guidance

Upvotes

Hi
So I completed my bachelors in Mech back in 2020 and have not worked in the field since then. Have basically little to no recollection of anything learnt back then. Now i want to get back into Mechanical related work and planning or hoping to write FE(mech) and PE( either HVAC, TFS, FPE) by february 2027. I have time to study and can make some effort but dont know how to get started. i started Directhub FE course and am going through it just did like 30% of it and tried solving a problem which completely stumped me. Need some guidance on how to prepare for both. Havent decided PE yet because i am confused and know that i need to study and appear for it now because i wont be able to do it in the future.
Interms of money dont have much can get access to books but wont be able to afford costly courses

TIA

Question Calculator Rules

Upvotes

I'm prepping for my mechanical FE and am currently panicking over a hypothetical. When are calculators allowed on the exam? The Lindeburg manual has sections of practice questions that say "use the NCEES Handbook as your only reference", is that supposed to simiulate parts of the exam when you're not allowed to use a calculator?

Question Help Needed with FE practice parabola question.

I don't understand how this question gets 2p=2 or p=-1. When I write out everything and account for k and h equaling 0, I get y^2 = 2px. How do I go from that to get to the solution of (-0.5, 0)?

I even looked up another solution online and it doesn't make sense to me either. Where does the 4 come from in that one?

Question How easy is PrepFE compared to the actual exam (FE Mechanical)?

Upvotes

Title. Prep FE along with lindenburg has been my go to resource for this prep. Prep FE to get the concept down and Lindenburg to familarize with different type of questions. PrepFE feels so much easier compared to the other resources used, I want to know if prep FE is good enough for me to pass the exam.

Tips You only fail when you stop trying

Post image
Upvotes

Finally received the double email this morning! If you have failed, Don’t give up. Took me a couple of tries.

Man I had so much anxiety and fear of failure every single time I took this test until this last one. I had done the studying, the work, but what changed is that I didn’t put my life on hold for this exam. I still hung out with friends, I exercised, but most importantly I prayed.

Throughout the whole process I had self doubt if I was a good enough engineer, and I believe God wanted me to see that.

This last time I was so calm, didn’t even took the caffeine pills, didn’t think of anxiet, didn’t think what if I fail this time. It was scary, brain was kind of blank. It was inner peace that you only get when you fully TRUST. It’s doable friends. Don’t give up! Thanks so much for this reddit group, yall helped a ton too.

Resources I used: interactive exam, 2 practice test, Islam 800, mark mattson. And knowing actually why you get questions wrong. Repeat the same question again and again. Once each day until you get the concept.
