General Favorite Elder Scrolls game?
•
u/soulsofjojy 2d ago
Damn, not even gonna include Daggerfall as an option? Fossils left out once again.
•
u/lets_review_porn 2d ago
Itās actually my favorite, but I also mod the shit out of it.Ā
•
u/musclecard54 2d ago
At this point every scrolls game gets modded to oblivion (no pun intended but kinda intended)
•
u/Clone95 1d ago
DFU is basically its own game based on the sad skeleton of real Daggerfall.
•
u/lets_review_porn 1d ago
You can kind of make the same argument for Skyrim though. Community has to fix Bethesdaās mistakes.Ā
•
u/Clone95 1d ago
Skyrim is a complete game from start to finish. You donāt need to mod it. You basically -have- to mod Daggerfall
•
u/Mission_Access_210 Meridia 21h ago
I would argue that today if you want to play Skyrim and have the experience really stand out to you, you also have to mod it. There are so many mods that just make the game so much more fun to play. I was playing through yesterday after I isolated the mods that were causing my list to fail in the new setup and it's freaking gorgeous.
You're running around in the wilderness. All of a sudden it's nighttime, you're by the water, and there are all these dragonflies, different fireflies, and 3D plants (because some guy back in like 2017 decided to model all the plants properly in 3D and people replaced all the textures everywhere).
Yeah it's a dated game. It's like a retro game at this point but I've got better park systems and skill trees that are similar to ESO in my version of Skyrim. I've got all kinds of extra magical weapons that someone designed and kept them similar to how magical weapons should look in Tamriel, and better skies. I've got beautiful lanterns and guys fixing the lanterns in my version of the game. That's a lot to leave out if you just play the vanilla. Not to mention all the extensions of vampires and all the additional dungeons that the people have put in

•
u/soulsofjojy 2d ago edited 2d ago
It is mine! It was the first one I played growing up, and I still really love it. The cozyness of the towns, the amazing soundtrack, getting lost in those dungeons for hours, the insanity of the magic system, the super in depth character creation. It really is something special.
•
u/shadowthehh 2d ago
Its not mine, but I can absolutely see it, especially thanks to Unity.

me, hello, replayed that shit 4 times and have not gotten bored of it yet.
•
u/Emotional-Effort-967 2d ago
It's easily the best Elder Scrolls game for role-playing. Highest amount of skills, dozens of joinable factions, the best character creation system out of the main entries, some of the best spellmaking, a fairly complex reputation and law system, Werewolves, WereBOARs, like 7 vampire bloodlines, multiple endings...
•
u/Presenting_UwU Khajiit 2d ago
honestly i disagree with the take that Skill amount, character customization, or joinable factions makes a game any better for roleplaying.
imo the best way a game could accommodate roleplaying it by having multiple open ended stories and adventures for the characters to piece together as they go weaving their own fully defined narrative through multiple quests and experiences.
which Daggerfal happens to be the best at because most of it's quests are well... they're not really full blown stories so you can kinda just roleplay whatever.
•
u/Kilroy0497 2d ago
For me itās about on the same level of Morrowind. Once you kind of have some idea of what your doing, itās great and definitely the best way to play Pre-Todd classic elder scrolls, but the game has less a learning curve and more a learning ādrive off the nearest cliffā so the first couple of playthroughs will almost always be painful.
•
u/Zauberer-IMDB Breton 1d ago
With the various Unity mods it's more playable than ever, and it is indeed the best modding some of the older UI stuff off.

•
u/Kravyniik 1d ago
in a world where the morrowind oblivion and skyrim fans eat each other the humble redguard enjoyer prevails
•
u/NewbieYoubie 2d ago
I started off with skyrim and worked my way backwards. Morrowind has been my favorite for a bit. It's so alien. The artstyle is nice for an older game. The music. The mod scene. The lack of quest markers was a fun brain exercise.
•
u/OkPresentation3329 1d ago
I also started with Skyrim and then Morrowind and then Oblivion and Morrowind also remained my favorite.
•
u/Hazel_RAAA 2d ago
Tried it for the first time last night and not having fun yet š„²
•
u/NewbieYoubie 2d ago
It's one of those games that you have to be in the mood to play it for the first time, not a game you pick up and say "hey let me try it out". Gotta be in the right headspace for you to start getting it.
It took me a few years of thinking about morrowind every now and then, and then I out of no where had the desire to genuinely try it out, and it's been history since.
•
u/Excubyte 2d ago
First time I played Morrowind a few years after Skyrim, I absolutely hated it. I gave it another try a few years later, forced myself through the first few hours and after that it very quickly became my favorite RPG of all time. It's absolutely worth getting past the initial feeling of it being a dated, janky mess.
•
u/ProtestantMormon 1d ago
Yes, no other elder scrolls game is a dated, kinky mess. Nothing to see here.
•
u/Excubyte 1d ago
I played through Battlespire a few weeks ago. That experience was... Interesting, to say the least. Probably the buggiest, least polished game I've put myself through ever.
•
u/Hi2248 1d ago
If you're finding the combat to be unfun due to the random hit chance, installing OpenMW and the Hit and Miss Percentage Indicators for Combat mod can help if you want to keep the gameplay the same: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/55396
Or if you would rather remove the hit chance entirely, you can use Better Balanced Combat, which doesn't require OpenMW: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/46596
•
u/Hazel_RAAA 1d ago edited 1d ago
Honestly I knew about that and it is what it is. I'm playing it on Xbox so I'm guessing these mods won't be available to me.
I was trying to do the mage guild errand from Balmora. Lost flame sword, no health pots left. Rage quit and spent rest of night procrastinating on reddit instead of going to bed š
Any advice appreciated.
Edit to add: There was a death and old save reload in between so this was at least an hour of my three hours of gameplay.
•
u/Hi2248 1d ago
If you're on Xbox, it will be vanilla, yes.
I'd recommend using an Almsivi/Divine Intervention scroll if you have one, and then divert to Edwinna Elbert's quests in the Ald'ruhn Mages Guild, until you complete the quest Return Chimarvamidium, which grants you a pair of Intervention amulets upon completion, which will allow you to teleport to the nearest Imperial Shrine or Tribunal Temple (usually the closest city) as long as they have charge, allowing you to escape from a losing fight as long as you can survive long enough to cast them.Ā
Also, the trader Ra'Virr in Balmora sells a set of weapons that have a corresponding Bound Weapon enchantment. Don't use the weapons themselves, and instead cast their enchantments, which will give you Daedric equivalent weapons with infinite durability and a boost to your weapon skills, allowing you to hit more accurately, also as long as they have charge.Ā
Enchanted weapons recharge over time, so if used right you can get away with never using soul gems to recharge them, but soul gems can be used to recharge too.Ā
Outside of that, I'd say that you shouldn't be ashamed to have UESP open as you play, especially for the map. Sometimes the characters don't give the most sensible directions, and the in game map is a bit unclear at times.
•
u/NewbieYoubie 1d ago
Health and stamina potions csn be made from common ingredients. If you want to play fair, go to the alchemist in balmora and get yourself a novice mortar and pestle (you can buy other component to make greater/longer effects, but you only need the m&p. Loot the urns around balmora as the loot in them is free, and contains many common ingredients. Equip the m&p and select your ingredients. If you have enough alchemy you should see the first effect of the ingredients. Make sure you're at max stamina when you craft.
Or if you don't want to alchemy, you can bribe the alchemist high elf lady up to max disposition and it'll help with prices.

Daggerfall, easily. No other TES game has the same creepy, horror atmosphere nor the aesthetics that this game does. Itās truly one of a kind.

Arena and Daggerfall in the 90's, Morrowind and Oblivion in the 2000's, and Skyrim in the Two-Tens. I imagine Sentinel will be my favorite before the Two-Twenties are finished.
Over 50. Not really a nostalgic gamer but each game does hold a special place. I have loved Elder Scrolls since the beginnig.

Its the best sequel to Arena. And somehow has easily the best combat in the series, despite the combat being the most criticized parts about it
•

u/WylythFD Argonian 2d ago
I'm probably gonna be laughed at for this, but my favorite is ESO. Mostly because it is likely the only game where we will see Black Marsh and Elsweyr (Arena doesn't count). Also because I don't have to worry about a stray dragon or vampire killing a quest importnant NPC.

Like 40% of this sub has only played Skyrim (and maybe dabbled with ESO, and Oblivion once it got remastered)
I started with Skyrim, for many years my only solid TES experience. Finally went back and played the rest, and realized how much I was missing out and how much better they were. Morrowind is easily the best in the series.
Havn't played the Travels games, board games, and almost caught up on ESO but been taking a break.

favorite is a toss up between daggerfall, Morrowind, and Skyrim. but Skyrim usually comes out on top.
•
•
u/Arel203 2d ago
Started off morrowind and have always maintained it was the best in the series. If you asked me a few year ago id say Morrow>Oblivion>Skyrim..
But after the remastered version of oblivion I realized that was just rose glasses. Skyrim features so many things that I just view as so integral to TES now and it has an approachablility that is purely unmatched by the older entries. I can play Skyrim today and enjoy it with a few mods just as well as I did back on release. I cant say the same with the others. I could barely even handle the oblivion remaster and found myself getting so bored by the dungeon design and AI.
Morrowind probably would be better or on par with a remastered/remake version cause I think there's more depth there.. but right now I just have to hand it to Skyrim. Its the goat for me.

Daggerfall easily.
Of these, my nostalgia dictates I choose Oblivion over Morrowind.
•
u/CyrodiilWarrior 2d ago
TES IV: Oblivion for it's location and setting. If it was built later on - with a better engine - it would have been a far better game. Personally, I have a fondness for Cyrodiil, the Imperials, Imperial culture. Cyrodiil had diversity to it's cities and city architecture.
Leyawiin - heavy Argonian population - historically claimed by the Khajiiti province of Elsweyr. The city has a lot different architecture compared to other cities and settlements across Cyrodiil. It has had a lot of influence from other cultures.
The Imperial City is impressive, with it's major Market District. If I was to 'live' in Cyrodiil though, I'd probably much prefer a city like Anvil - with it's coast and docks. If Oblivion was in a better game engine, perhaps Anvil could have been much more impressive - following original concept art.
Skyblivion will be a huge hit on it's release!
•
u/bkoperski 2d ago
The level scaling is what kills it. You never feel progress.
•
u/CyrodiilWarrior 2d ago
I agree. š Before I knew about mods, I kept restarting the game many times. Later on, I began using 'Oblivion XP Update' mod. That mod made the game playable for me.
A ton about Oblivion could have been improved - dungeon interiors - so I'm excited about Skyblivion.
•
u/Vidistis Meridia 2d ago
I just wish they went in a more interesting route with how they depicted Cyrodiil. I don't mind that it's not a jungle, but having a greater greco-roman/east asian influence would have made the province and culture stand out more and the Breton's toes wouldn't been stepped on as the classic medieval fantasy race/province.
Honestly I think the other games do a better job at depicting Cyrodiil and the Imperials as an interesting and unique province. At least ESO has been able to throw in more unique depictions.
•
u/Kilroy0497 2d ago
For me the games go
- Oblivion
2/3. Daggerfall/Morrowind(I can never decide which I prefer).
Skyrim
Arena
Battlespire
Redguard
•
u/born_to_cabbage 2d ago
Battlespire higher than Redguard is shocking.
•
u/Kilroy0497 2d ago
I mean while both games are generally trainwrecks, at least Battlespire does feel like itās part of the setting and keeps the dungeon crawling aspect from the older games, whereas Redguardā¦..yeah the less said about that the better.
•
u/born_to_cabbage 2d ago
I don't know, I found Redguard more fitting in the setting. Battlespire to me feels very generic.
•
u/Presenting_UwU Khajiit 2d ago

Morrowind with dlcs is a absolute KING... and Solstheim was my wet dream when it comes to northern fantasy. Pitty how Toddy ruined old Nords art style and lore. Also Morrowind was only TES game with REAL choices... Werewolfs or Skaals. Only one Dunmer House at the time or one vampire clan.
Skyrim on ton of mods is quite good but it is not because of Bethesda work but the fanbase... can't call it my favorite becasue of it.
•
u/bkoperski 2d ago
I got bored of Skyrim real fast on future playthroughs. There really is no character choice. Stats customization is bland. I had alot of fun on it the first time though

My brother actually had a cool head cannon that the different games play out like they were made by the people in the region they take place in.
Skyrim is an epic action heavy adventure that a Nord would appreciate. Morrowind is filled with politcal and religious intrigue. Oblivion is a Nobel quest through a gorgeous capital to restore a righteous hereditary ruler.
•
u/AmbitiousSpeech24 2d ago
Oblivion >>
•
u/CyrodiilWarrior 2d ago
Strongly agree! For it's Imperial: setting, environment, and location. If Oblivion was developed and released later on, it would of had a better game engine - with game mechanics - at it's foundation.

Having been played the 4 games in the series at least twice, I can confidently say that I like morrowind the best. The plot is so goddamn awesome that I can't get enough of it. It tackles about apotheosis and two-faced gods who were once mortals. Everything is just so interesting, its like im learning how to walk a 2nd time.

I think they all do something better than the others. Morrowind has the best writing and world building by far. Skyrim is the most accessible. Oblivion was a good balance between the two

u/USBattleSteed 2d ago
Skyrim has my favorite atmosphere and combat, but Morrowind's story and art design are just so amazing compared to the other two
•
u/triniumalloy Azura 2d ago
Good news from Kvatch for a change. The last of the Daedra have been driven out.
•
u/born_to_cabbage 2d ago
I didn't play Daggerfall but out of these three the answer for me is incredibly easy ā Morrowind. And I kinda started playing morrowind only like year and half ago.
I like Oblivion for its quests and it was my first YES game, but level scaling without mods makes game very annoying.
Skyrim I think is very atmospheric, but after playing Morrowind I can't play it anymore.
•
u/Pristine-Science8810 2d ago
I voted Skyrim but I think Skyrim and oblivion are tied for me. Probably.
Skyrim does combat and (in my opinion) main plot better than oblivion, but oblivion does magic and general gameplay loop slightly better than Skyrim imo (the oblivion gates being an optional combat challenge to get an item to enchant with is really fucken good game design)
•
u/Monst3rP3nguin Breton 2d ago
Morrowind is the best setting and Skyrim the most accessible, but Oblivion is a special mix of RPG, action, story, setting, and jank that I just love. I also love how vibrant the game is and varied it's environment. And of course the wack potato heads learning to talk for the first time lol.
•
u/Presenting_UwU Khajiit 2d ago edited 2d ago
Haven't played Morrowind yet, so Skyrim won for me purely because Dragons were... waayyyy more fun than Oblivion Gates ngl.
(but yeah if you had included the rest of the series, definitely Daggerfall, played it 4 times and it's still so much fun (as long as you ignore the main quest))
•
u/Nachooolo 2d ago
Oblivion for me.
The story is decent, bejng elevated by Martin Septim being one of my favourite characters in Elder Scrolls (legit one of the best written in the Elder Scrolls games). Colovia (Western Cyrodiil) as a whole is also legit gorgeous (I love its Southern European atmosphere), with Skingrad being my favourite city in Elder Scrolls (it would have been Anvil if it was more densely populated), and the Gold Coast my favourite region in the games.
The main problem is a lack of diversity in dungeons, which affected the game throughout it (I was able to speedrun every Oblivion gate because of how much they repeated themselves). And the scaling being completely fucked (something that was improved in the Remastered).
•
u/Doodles_n_Scribbles 1d ago
Oblivion
Like, it's my personal favorite so I shouldn't need to try and prove it's objectively the best, but we have Whodunit, arguably THE most beloved quest in all Elder Scrolls
•
u/Gullfaxi09 Nord 1d ago edited 1d ago
I started out with Oblivion way back when, and while I still love it, warts and all, there's just something about Skyrim.
Maybe it reminds me of being 13 again in 2011 and all the difficult, lonely, frustrating times during my teens, where I found comfort in Skyrim's rugged landscapes and being the beloved, powerful hero of the land who always triumphs and saves the day, in spite of how helpless and depressed I may have felt in real life, or maybe it's due to my enormous, lifelong passion for Old Norse sagas and legends with their heroic characters and plots, which Skyrim feels tailormade to relive the fantasy of.
Either way, cheesy as it may sound, I feel some sort of strange connection with Skyrim, as I imagine many do. I always come back to it, no matter what, and the feeling I get from returning to Skyrim after a long break from it, is indescribable. Nostalgia and comfort in their purest forms.
I have yet to play Morrowind, but certainly plan to. Must be great as well, based on what I've seen and heard. But it's hard to compete with the impact Skyrim has had on me. It came at just the right time in my life.

Iāve played every single one to completion (except Arena, sorry) and I still like Skyrim the most because itās the one I played when I was a very depressed teenager. So Iām very nostalgic over it since this game was a much needed form of escapism in an otherwise bad time in my life.

u/Constant_Hope_9658 1d ago
Morrowind was cool when I played it on my Xbox back in the 2010s (years after ES5's release), it's a shame that they cut spears after that one, even though they're still using the same bloody engine iirc.

If weāre counting the modding scene - it has to be Morrowind. Nothing comes even close to the attention to details and lore of Tamriel Rebuilt/Project Tamriel.

•
u/Miyu543 2d ago
Morrowind will always be my favorite because there truly just is no game world like it. Its something so alien yet believable and realistic at the same time. Its a classist society with racism, factions, slavery, drug trafficking, conflicts of worship, different noble houses, exc, exc.. Its a beautiful, ugly world with all the worst traits of humanity mixed in which makes it so real. It doesn't shy away from the dark stuff, and paints it as something as normal as breathing air in dark elf society.
Whats even more as you're not some arbiter to change culture you don't become the breaking point, you are just as much beholden to the world's customs as anyone else, and yes you can kill indiscriminately those you view as evil but you will be branded a criminal for it. Its not a fair world, and thats what makes it so real. To me at least.
The only other game I think that really touches on that fantastical realism to me is Kenshi.
•
u/Kubaj_CZ Khajiit 1d ago
I played all three, pretty much fully with multiple playthroughs. I chose Skyrim.
I always play a mage and Morrowind was the only game where magic sucked ass and I mainly focused on melee and archery. I appreciate Morrowind's worldbuilding but otherwise people overpraise it too much. Vampirism and lycanthropy also sucked ass horribly in Morrowind, vampirism in Skyrim is cool and lycanthropy works too. I didn't really try vampirism in Oblivion, but at least I remember I could feed. Also in Morrowind there just isn't much to do otherwise. I could do repeatable quests in Skyrim and it was fine to do them sometimes. Morrowind is good enough to explore one time (from multiple perspectives) and that's it. I don't need to return to Morrowind ever again. Morrowind felt more draining as well. And it's bugged as hell, and I even had some purist patch to mitigate it - keep in mind that I played Oblivion and Skyrim purely vanilla and I was never so mad at a game because of bugs. Morrowind is a hellish experience in this. I was almost afraid to do quests without looking for bugs and potentially accidentally spoiling myself things in the result. In general I am sometimes bitter towards Morrowind and to those who keep praising it to the heavens (and putting other TES games down)
Also you could have included other games like Daggerfall and ESO.

u/peanutch 1d ago
so people prefer the two elder scrolls for dummies. not surprising as most older games are too difficult for last 3 generations
•
•
u/DeliciousCabinet7556 1d ago
I prefer oblivion partly because of nostalgia but also because of memorable questlines, immersive hud, radiant ai, still having spell crafting and combat being actual real-time even tho super basic.
I did not prefer morrowind for combat being actually boring, static npcs that broke immersion the second I joined the thieves guild and encyclopedic conversations instead of actual dialogue. Thats said I still loved it.
I did not prefer skyrim because they took a modern approach to hud/ui, the quests had no dialogue other than go here and the guild questlines (especially the college of winterhold) didn't feel immersive. I did not have to be a good wizard to become arch mage and I did not have to steal all that much for the thieves guild. Dark brotherhood I don't remember well tbh, all I remember is the ending. Still loved the game tho and with mods it might be my favorite but I am judging the raw game as is.

Oblivion (or at least the remaster) was good but it didnt really click with me like Skyrim did. Maybe because my expectations were too high based on what original fans had said
