MOD [MOD] Feature Designer: September: The Cozy DH Stitchery

Hi, Stitchers!

This month’s feature designer is The Cozy DH Stitchery!! We are so excited to bring you this interview and introduce you to Toot & DH. I know these patterns pop up here often and I’m so excited to share this with everyone. The designers have also generously offered a 10% discount with REDDHOT10 for the month!

Who are you?
We are Toot (she/they) and DH (they/them), a queer married couple from Canada who design under The Cozy DH Stitchery! Being the more front-facing of the duo, DH is the one answering the questions.

What’s something people don’t know about you?
Because we're a two-person team, each pattern is fine-tuned with the stitcher in mind.

How did you get started cross stitching?
We both learned to stitch in the 1900s and have circled back to it on and off for most of our lives. We picked it back up in 2023 due to disabilities making other crafts less feasible and we seem to have found our calling!

When and why did you start designing patterns?
Toot was looking for Five Nights at Freddy's patterns and simply couldn't find any good ones. Okay, I said. I guess I'll do it myself. We started with FNAF, Valorant, and Mail Time patterns, with our first original pattern being Crockpot Magic.

Where do you get your inspiration?
We draw heavily on the weird and wonderful world around us. We both have had a long-time love and fascination with folklore, mythology, fairy tales, and urban legends. Toot's college degree had a minor in folklore, and she also draws in a lot of inspiration from horror movies. I have a degree in Celtic Studies, and a special interest in conspiracy theories and ancient aliens.

Describe your designs using only adjectives.
Cute. Weird. Surprising. Comfortable.

What design was your favorite to make?
Our Patreon pattern for August is one that I am particularly proud of - it's called Summer Camp Slasher, and it's an homage to the summer camp horror genre, as well as my own childhood experiences of camp and ghost stories about deranged murderers coming up from the floorboards.

Favorite DMC color?
Mine is DMC 16. I would have said before 704, but I think 16 is my new love. It's just so intensely green. Toot's favourite is DMC 210.

Any advice for new stitchers or designers?
For new stitchers, I say - it's only floss and thread. Don't stress it. If you're starting with DMC, floss is incredibly cheap, don't let one tangle ruin hours of your life. Cut it and move on. My other piece of advice is that nothing is too difficult. Pick a piece you want to stitch and you can learn the skills along the way - you'll be more motivated to stick with it and learn if it's a project you love.

For new designers - think about who you're designing for. Not just in terms of your target audience, but think about the actual experience of stitching. Are there huge blocks of colour that you, personally, wouldn't want to stitch? Is this going to be a weird shape or size to finish? Don't rush it. Do a bit, step away, come back with fresh eyes, repeat.

Where can we find you online?
We are on all the platforms - Etsy, fybe, ko-fi, but the best place to find us is on our site TheCozyDHStitchery.com - BUT! You can also find us at your local LNS. We were a vendor at Needlework Marketplace this past August, and you might be able to snag one of our paper patterns in person or request your LNS reach out to us for an order!

Pattern: Amanda J Butler Designs. From Cross Stitcher magazine but can be found on Etsy

I started cross stitching when I was having chemo late last year. I did printed kits as chemo brain could not handle counting 😂

Now I’m recovering I fancied a challenge and found this pattern in an old issue of Cross Stitcher magazine on my Libby app.

i moved the tiles about as I plan to make this into a cushion and wanted it wider rather than taller.

Back stitching was new to me and this pattern had loads. 😬

Pretty proud of this one and have already started on my next piece already.

My most difficult but rewarding finish yet! It’s so pretty and the colors are gorgeous, they pop so much! I’m in love. Definitely want to find a good frame for it. The pattern is Unicorn in Captivity by HeidrunCrafts.

PIC [PIC] My First State Fair Ribbons!

I entered five pieces at the Nebraska State Fair for the first time. I got a second place and a fifth place finish in the Holiday: Other category (pumpkin and mosaic). Oddly enough, the two that got blue ribbons at the county fair (sampler and gnome) didn't place at all.

I'm incredibly disappointed to find out that judging notes or feedback are not included. How am I supposed to improve with zero feedback from the controlling body? Anyhoo. Pretty proud of myself and I've already got my patterns picked out for next year.

Patterns are:

Goofy Gourds from Just Cross Stitch Fall 2025

Light Garden by Una Buena Pieza

Meant to Be by Little Dove Designs

Dalliance by Long Dog Stitchery

Olde Saint Nick from Just Cross Stitch Christmas 2025

PIC [PIC] Found in grandma’s apartment. Any insight into what it is?

Post image
Upvotes

Hello! My mother recently gifted me this. She found it at my grandma’s apartment after her passing. She was a very avid cross stitcher and would make portraits of us grandchildren when we started kindergarten. I hadn’t seen her work on anything like this ever and I am curious if any of you have any insight into what this could be/represent if anything? I absolutely love it and want to get it framed but I would like to be able to explain what it is I have in a massive frame in my living room. I just measured and it’s about 50x21 inches. Any help/info would be very much so appreciated!

This was the first project I've completed since 2020! And my second project ever, haha. I'm very proud of it. Oranges are a symbol of love between my best friend and her now husband, so I thought this would be a nice piece of art for them to have at home :) Professionally framed too!

FO [FO] Hobbit Sampler

Finally finished my sister’s belated birthday present! (Sis, if you see this, it’s in the mail this week!) This sampler was a pure joy to make - I loved being able to focus on one character at a time and finish it right around when I got bored.

This was also the first piece I made with pre-gridded Aida and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. So much easier to keep track of things.

I finished it by covering the back with fusible interfacing, then piecing it as a wall hanging. I didn’t feel like fully quilting it, so I added some buttons to stabilize it. The backing fabric is just there for the memes.

Closeup of my stitching included so you can see Gollum’s lil loincloth 😂

She is a birder so I'm excited to give this to her for her baby's nursery. It was stitched on 14 count Aida and took me about 43 hours for all (approx 5,000 stitches). I am fairly new to cross stitch so my technique definitely improved as I went!

Pattern is from TwoHappyPossums on Etsy. The pattern includes 6 birds, but I ran out of time to get all of them done haha

(Reposting as some grid lines were visible in my last poat)

SELF-PROMO [PATTERN] Khorovod — A free modern Slavic-inspired cross stitch sampler

Upvotes

Hi everyone !

I wanted to share my latest creation, Khorovod — a modern Slavic-inspired cross stitch sampler that I designed myself. It's stitched in a minimalist black and soft pink palette, featuring a traditional alphabet, geometric borders, and folk motifs like the Tree of Life, birds, and dancers.

I'm making the PDF pattern completely free for anyone who'd like to stitch it

I literally had to buy a headlamp so I wouldn’t destroy my eyes trying to follow this pattern. I thought white on white was as bad as it could get but boy was I wrong. Do yourself a favor and never follow a pattern that suggests this particular form of torture 😭

FO [FO] first cross stitch since surgery :)

I had to take a couple months break from cross stitching while I recovered both physically and mentally from pelvic surgery. I ended up stuck in a very depressed place and was bed/chair rotting and doomscrolling 18 hours a day with very little sleep.

I decided to start with something small to help ease into the hobby again. With the help of my friends choosing the pattern for me, I made a tiny cute lil black kitty :) I remember how much I love stitching now! My spirits already feel a little lighter 😇

🪡 Design was pixel art found on Pinterest. Second pic is proof of handmade stitches.

Sardine cross stitch by CottonClara on Etsy

This mini is for my daughter in laws birthday this month. She loves stuff like this.

I made one change to the pattern. I switched out the French knots in the eyes for beads. I despise French knots with my whole being!
