A married Secret Service agent struggled to extradite a Romanian hacker, so he posed as a woman and developed a flirtatious online relationship with him. When the hacker flew to Boston to meet her, he arrived with a gold necklace and three boxes of grape-flavored condoms—only to be arrested.

In 2008, Secret Service agent Matt O’Neill went undercover as a fictional female casino employee named “Sarah” to lure Romanian hacker Iulian Dolan to the United States. Dolan was suspected of hacking point-of-sale systems at Subway franchises and other retailers, and bringing him to U.S. soil would allow authorities to arrest him without extraditing him from Romania.
To make “Sarah” believable, the Secret Service worked with an American hotel and casino to create a fake employee profile, complete with an email address, phone line, and listing on the hotel’s website. Agents even photographed a young female undercover agent holding a “Hi!” sign and sent the image to Dolan.
O’Neill spent months chatting with Dolan online, developing what he called a “quasi-romantic” relationship. Dolan eventually flew to Boston to meet “Sarah,” reportedly carrying a gold necklace as a gift and three boxes of grape-flavored condoms. Instead, investigators arrested him, and he was later sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
