This “turtle tornado shelter”’from 2005. The sloped shape prevents debris from puncturing compared to normal boxy tornado shelters. Sadly it didn’t catch on.

Looking at OP's link to the original article, it's from a publication that was print-first in 2005. Looks like the source pretty much uploaded a copy of their newspaper, which included a black and white photo for print.

I clicked on this thinking it was cool that someone was looking out for the turtles and also wondering why it didn’t catch on. I don’t even have migraines, I’m just dumb.

(I don't live in a tornado prone area so forgive my ignorance)
What would this be used for? My understanding was that tornado prone areas tend to have structures that are either fully or partially underground. Wouldn't this (since it looks like it's just sitting on some wooden blocks) just get thrown around during a tornado?

Most of us don’t have dedicated tornado shelters. We either go to the most secure part of the house and hope for the best or stand out on the porch and watch it.

What if you live in a mobile home or other place without a basement?
But ultimately there’s a reason this didn’t catch on

Trailer parks often have a shared community storm shelter. Some people arrange to shelter at a neighbor's. Isolated homes might have a root cellar or a specific part of the home or an outbuilding that was more secure. Some public buildings and businesses advertise that people can seek shelter there.

If you don't have a basement, you get away from windows since the force of the glass breaking could seriously cut you up. Windowless bathroom with the door shut is the best bet for a lot of apartments.

yeah, but with a structure like this, you could probably anchor them to the ground more easily. It’s also likely intended to protect against lower level tornado damage or nearby debris damage more than an extreme tornado that it is directly in the path of.
