Questions Where has Rocky Road gone?

I’m a big fan of Rocky Road ice cream, which is pretty unfortunate given it’s almost entirely absent from ice cream stores. I feel like I can remember it being a pretty core flavor in most rotations, but nowadays I feel like I don’t see it anywhere. Is the flavor just aging out? I wouldn’t think so it’s a pretty good combo but curious what other people think.. I live in the Midwestern United States

My friggin dad ate it all.

u/SwanWilling9870 1d ago

Im laughing so damn hard at this 🤣

u/AH-Slayer 1d ago

Me too!!!!

u/Fritzo2162 1d ago

I heard him scraping the bottom of the bowl.

u/No_Salad_8766 23h ago

Dogs heard that from across the house and came running to see if they could lick the bowl out.

u/CommercialExotic2038 21h ago

Oh how I miss JackJack

u/InfamousEconomy3972 1d ago

Sorry, son

u/crates-of-bigfoots 1d ago

Hello, brother.

u/thenletskeepdancing 1d ago

Every time.

u/Clara-Evans 23h ago

Classic dad behavior😪

u/wildflower_valley 1d ago

My question is where has the rocky road with actual marshmallows gone? All I find are the kind with marshmallow “cream” and I don’t like it

u/Gullible_Mistake_448 1d ago

Yeah the cream version is a total cop out, you need those little chewy marshmallow bits to make it actually rocky road. You ever tried asking an ice cream shop if they can fold in real marshmallows for you?

u/wildflower_valley 17h ago

I went to a cold stone and had them mix in marshmallows that turned out to be really stale. I have a baskin robbins half an hour away from me that I’m willing to drive to since a lot of people say they have the good stuff lol

u/UncreativeKiki 1d ago

I recently discovered Tillamook has a fantastic rocky road with actual marshmallows! Hopefully you can find it in your area.

u/MotherofJackals 23h ago

None of the stores here that do carry Tillamook ever have Rocky Road, it's weird

u/Kkimp1955 22h ago

Ask the manager to order it ?

u/Lanky-Proposal-3417 18h ago

Is there a kiosk or must I engage a true human

u/47687236 18h ago

Sorry, you'll have to ask a real human. Depending on the store you'll either talk to someone at customer service to fill out a request for an item, or if it's an old fashioned place they might page a manager to come talk to you. Either way, you'll get the satisfaction of seeing it in the store and getting to say "hell yeah, I did that"

u/Sa7aSa7a 15h ago

You can probably fill out a form online but you're most likely to get an actual response in person.

u/UncreativeKiki 23h ago

I’ve only found it recently and I’m sure will only be temporary. They cycle a lot of their flavors pretty regularly in the stores here. I’ve been buying it as often as I can, it’ll be a sad day when it’s gone again. Hopefully there will be some near you soon!!

u/seaword9 1d ago

Tillamook is the best

u/SJSharky 16h ago

It's so good, it's so difficult to eat other ice creams.

u/mysticalchurro 8h ago

it's not rocky road, but my local store just brought back the Tillamook Caramel Swirl ice cream after not having it for several months. i'm both excited and scared because I don't need ice cream.

u/reamkore 1d ago

The baskin Robbin’s RR has real marshmallow

u/Turbulent-Bee6921 23h ago

When I was little, the local Baskin-Robbin had the literal best rocky road ice cream I remember in my life. The chocolate ice cream in it was dark and dense. These days whenever I get rocky road, the chocolate ice cream seems too light, airy, flavorless, and not containing any real chocolate.

u/gettingfiscal 23h ago

This is one of my favorite RRs and I think I was the only person buying them at my grocery store since they stopped selling it :(

u/General-Heart4787 1d ago

If they have Edy’s brand where you are, it has the real marshmallows. I don’t like the ones with “marshmallow swirl” either!

u/anonymouscog 22h ago

Ugh, I hate the marshmallow ribbon. Sometimes our store is out of the good rocky road & I'll go without before I'll buy that crap

u/a-touch-of-pink 20h ago

Dreyer’s Extreme Rocky Road also has marshmallows!

→ More replies (5)

u/guynextdoorfun 23h ago

Baskin Robins brand still has whole marshmallows.

u/LittleMissRawr78 23h ago

This is the only kind in my opinion. The marshmallow cream just isn't as good.

u/Previous-Space-7056 16h ago

Got a quart of thrifty s rocky road ice cream. Has actual marshmellos

u/PreparationHot980 13h ago

Global warming has taken away the marshmallow trees :(

u/Stacy3536 1d ago

I live in south Carolina and see it in all the stores here.

I miss heavenly hash ice cream.

u/SpreadsheetSiren 1d ago

Oooh, yes. Heavenly Hash was the best!

u/Billazilla 1d ago

I work at an ice cream warehouse house in South Carolina. We deliver Rocky Road, for sure. Dollar stores, mostly.

u/procrastinatorsuprem 1d ago

That was my mom's favorite.

u/Sa7aSa7a 15h ago

From NC, I used to only get that.

u/themigraineur 1d ago

Ask Weird Al to sing about it again, maybe that'll help

u/TobyFromH-R 1d ago

GO BUY HALF A GALLON BABY!

u/bionicjoey [limited supply (read: rare meme)] 23h ago

Sorry, I don't listen to Al-generated content

u/_coffee_ 23h ago

u/feanturi 23h ago

That's what they said actually, take a really close look at that 'I'. Some people have been suggesting that Al-Generated Content should be the title or byline of his next album because it would be funny.

u/bionicjoey [limited supply (read: rare meme)] 23h ago

Also he made the joke himself at some point on bluesky. Said everything he's done is actually Al-generated

u/_coffee_ 23h ago

Not on my end.

My comment used the capitalized version of AL and AI in the first part, with the use of a lowercase L (l) in the link portion. Lowercase l looks identical to an automatically capitalized i in the app, but not on my laptop (I)

Perhaps the serifs need to be standardized between platforms and apps.

u/tacky_swift 22h ago

This thread is so funny

u/_coffee_ 12h ago

Well, it is a casual conversation.

u/bionicjoey [limited supply (read: rare meme)] 22h ago

I don't think any major mobile OS's or web browsers use serif fonts by default. They are generally considered less readable on screens. But you can often still tell lowercase L and uppercase I apart based on height: lIlIIlllII

→ More replies (1)

u/owmybotheyes 1d ago

There are so many experimental flavors nowadays I think it’s just knocked too far down the line for stores to shelf it. I live in the south and the brand Mayfield dominates the ice cream market here. They always seem to have a few new flavors that every time I look.

u/llamamama81 1d ago

Where in the South do you live??? Not in Alabama because we are a bluebell state 🤣

u/cigr 23h ago

Yeah, here in MS pretty much every grocery store has bluebell rocky road.

u/rabies_peppermint nuclear medicine student 1d ago

weird suggestion but check walgreens. they usually have rocky road in their freezer at least at all of the ones I've been to always have

u/Twisty12223 23h ago

I second Walgreens. They actually have a good variety. Why i don't know. It's where I can still find chunky monkey.

u/rabies_peppermint nuclear medicine student 22h ago

I worked for walgreens I still got no clue why we stocked half of the stuff we did lol

u/tvieno 1d ago

Check the store brands for the flavor. I love moose tracks blend and I can't find it anywhere under the major brands but Kroger's brand "Premier Select" had it.

u/No-Ball8258 23h ago

Moose Tracks representation 🎉🎉🎉

u/Ratedforarbitary 20h ago

Been long time since I seen them

u/ParadiseLosingIt 23h ago

Publix, too.

u/DailyUpsAndDowns 1d ago

A few years ago Breyers stopped coating the nuts in chocolate. What a disaster. Then they started covering them again. One of my favorites.

u/TopBuy404 1d ago

Rocky road is my favorite and it's basically the only ice cream flavor I buy. I'll mix it up here and there but it's def still around

u/teebonejay 1d ago

Infrastructure and paving technology has improved.

u/greina23 23h ago edited 23h ago

You don't live in Tucson and it shows. Lol

Edit: JFC, I really to proofread before posting

u/That-Water-Guy 1d ago

Came to say the same thing.

u/terifficwhistler 1d ago

I dunno, I had two different Rocky’s road yesterday.

u/steal-yur-face 1d ago edited 18h ago

It’s morphed into a marshmallow flavored swirl and most of the nuts are gone.

There’s still a couple of the OG Rocky roads out there,

u/DemonSlyr007 1d ago

Man, I wish I could like rocky road. Its got most of my favorite things, and one i absolutely despise in the Marshmallows.

I usually get a version that basically swaps the marshmallows for peanut butter cups/swirls.

u/TopBuy404 1d ago

Turtle tracks!

u/bakelitetm 20h ago

Opposite here. I would love a version without nuts that has real marshmallows.

u/Front13r_Wh1sk3y 23h ago

“Spumoni” has entered the chat…

u/TheSheWhoSaidThats 23h ago

This post alarms me. I shall investigate.

u/Oldskywater 1d ago

My Food Lion carries it

u/clearclaw 15h ago

I just want rum and raisin back.

u/homersbuttcrack 1d ago

I think it's been replaced with Moose Tracks

u/Poultrygeist74 23h ago

Rocky Road is pretty much my favorite. Does anyone remember Tin Roof Sundae? It was my mom’s favorite and I really liked it too but I haven’t seen it in years

u/kimariesingsMD Chopping it up! 23h ago

It is still sold here in Maryland.

u/Isamosed 20h ago

Tin Roof was my mom’s favorite

u/Kigeliakitten 1d ago

I’m in Florida and I have been looking for it. I can find Heavenly Hash.

u/duskrat 1d ago

Had some at Baskin Robbins yesterday--it was a lot better than that I've bought in stores.

u/Frosty-Pay5351 1d ago

Automatically when I see rocky road I think of Weird Al

u/PrinceBytorAppears 1d ago

Walmart sells it and has for the past like 30 years lol

u/LaylaMoonUnit 1d ago

I see it in the grocery store all the time, especially Baskin’ Robbin’s brand. If you’re in Jewel land, they frequently have it. I also see it in the cheap half-gallon house brands a lot, too.

More than mint chocolate chip, which should be considered criminal. MCC supremacy.

u/CallidoraBlack 1d ago

I've definitely seen it in grocery stores on the East Coast.

u/Independent_Donut246 1d ago

It’s with plain chocolate chip. Sighhhhhh. Sometimes I just want a simple cone with a scoop of chocolate chip, not mint, not cookie dough, not some other flavor. Just a solid vanilla ice cream with decent chocolate chips. I do like rocky road too. Def not as prevalent now.

u/AFOHINCO 1d ago

If you can try Graeters, they have the best chocolate in traditional flavors

u/Starkville 23h ago

It’s been replaced by other flavors that have add-ins. Nuts, chocolate (or “chocolatey”) bits, marshmallow “swirl”.

u/MotherofJackals 23h ago

And the "ribbon of marshmallow " bullshit they do have is NOT it. Actual marshmallows, nuts not fricken dust mixed in, and chocolate ice-cream that tastes like chocolate not just flavor neutral brown ice-cream. I haven't had real Rocky road ice-cream in probably 10 years or more.

u/inbigtreble30 23h ago

Idk but it's probably with my spumoni. Let me know if you find them.

u/Candid-Session-124 23h ago

It was a favorite at Baskin-Robbins when I worked there 100 years ago very hard to scoop though so it wasn’t my favorite. The worst flavor was licorice.

u/No_Salad_8766 23h ago

I live in the Midwest and I just looked at my local stores app (woodmans) and theres like 8 different rocky road ice creams I could buy now. And thats just 1 store.

u/razzemmatazz 22h ago

Bunny/moose tracks has taken its place.

u/llbellenow 22h ago

It's also challenging to find regular chocolate chip ice cream. Not coffee chip or mint chocolate chip or fudge chip or cookie dough etc. I just want a good vanilla base with chocolate chips, and I'm surprised at how often it isn't available!

u/Oh_No_Its_Dudder 21h ago

About a month ago I was wondering the same thing, only with Black Cherry Ice Cream.

u/QuailComfortable2197 20h ago

Rocky Road walked so every “extreme brownie explosion” flavor could run.

u/MareV51 19h ago

Thrifty ice cream still makes it, but it's nasty. Almonds are tiny cuts, and marshmallow is just a flavor. I want my big almonds and marshmallows like I had 2 x a week when I worked 1 block from the store from 1975-1991!@

u/SoaRing-71_Blackbird 1d ago

The situation got rocky so it hit the road

u/MoodVast9430 1d ago

Never enough. I have to hunt it down. I prefer no nuts!

u/AcesAnd08s 1d ago

Check Haagen Dazs at your grocery store. They still have a Rocky Road that is the best I’ve ever had.

u/V_mom 1d ago

I can still find it but it's usually only one or two options and most of the time it's the marshmallow swirl instead of the marshmallows and it's frozen dairy dessert instead of ice cream so it's not really good. But mint chocolate chip and rocky road are my favorite flavors, but finding good ones is hard.

u/bullseyejoe 1d ago

Yep. I am an ice cream guy and YEP that flavor appears to be missing nowadays.

u/bullseyejoe 1d ago

Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip !

u/Furry_Wall 1d ago

It wasn't selling that well

u/Fritzo2162 1d ago

It's gone due to marketing:

Rocky Road? Eh.

Marshmallow Snickers? OOOoooooooooooo......

u/KMizzle98 1d ago

I agree. Rocky Road has been my favorite my entire adult life. Mix in a spoonful (or two) of peanut butter and it is HEAVEN!

I have found it harder and harder to find over the years.... same with my other favorite, Butter Pecan.

u/Loisgrand6 1d ago

I see Butter pecan in stores

u/KMizzle98 1d ago

I do too, just not all stores.

u/Popular-Deal-1481 1d ago

It was my staple and I still get it every once in a while but mint chocolate chip is now my go to. Baskin Robins still carries it regularly. I’m in Los Angeles.

u/FinalGirl78 1d ago

This is the kind of conversations I come to this subreddit for. I literally just had rocky road for the first time ever a few months back and was annoyed I hadn't tried it sooner. Justice for Rocky Road!!

u/Existing-Face-6322 1d ago

I want to know where Nilla wafers went (in Canada, I know they exist in the US). I also want peach ice cream and that seems to not exist at all.

u/Popular-Deal-1481 21h ago

You need to visit Georgia, they got peach everything

u/throwingales 1d ago

Kroger sells Rocky Road ice cream from several companies including their own private label Kroger Rocky Road ice cream as well as Edy's/Dreyer's, Baskin Robbins, Breyer's and Haagen-Dazs.

u/Nitrofox2 1d ago

Weird Al Ate it all

u/JustAnotherDay1977 1d ago

For better and worse, replaced by salted caramel.

u/moneypenny88 1d ago

Blue Bell has my favorite Rocky Road. Got a brand new one in my freezer right now.

u/phylbert57 1d ago

Probably the same place regular chocolate chip (without cookie dough) went. I’m so disappointed. I don’t want your fricken cookie dough!!

u/T4ffetaFable 1d ago

Rocky Road is definitely still around, but it feels like one of those flavors you have to specifically hunt for now. Such a shame because chocolate, marshmallow, and nuts is a pretty unbeatable combo.

u/nauticalfiesta 1d ago

Ben and Jerry’s sells a flavor. If you don’t see it ask the store to carry it.

u/ShirtOne8537 1d ago

Its my favorite. And I can totally get it at ice cream parlors in my area plus grocery stores. Haagen daz is my current fave.

I think where you live is just a little lame for not providing your favorite as much lol

u/_GOBLESS_ 1d ago

Now that you mention it, I haven't see Rocky Road for years. I'm still irked about that time I bought a gallon and it had peanuts instead of almonds. WTF.

u/Voluntary_Perry 1d ago

I saw Breyers Rocky Road at Meijer yesterday

u/luneletters 1d ago

I miss turtle tracks 😞

u/munkymama 1d ago

I miss beet eggs. Dunno why but I do. They used to be in all the gas stations and rest stops with convenience stores. No longer :(.

u/DerelictMyOwnBalls 1d ago

It went back to Hell where it belongs!

u/a-ohhh 1d ago

They have it at my Walmart! Tilamook brand or Dreyers/Edy’s brand.

u/Mortal_94 1d ago

It's not the ice cream kind, but my lady used to make a meeeeeeaaaannnn Rocky Road! Pretty sure that's what ruined my diet when we moved in together 😂!

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 1d ago

Do you have a Hyvee near you, a Walgreens, check there. Caseys has it stocked sometimes. I'd call around before driving all over the place for ice cream though. I am midwest as well.

u/EpicallyOkay 1d ago

Locally it was part of a triple of flavours into my teen years now mostly disappeared by changing tastes and closed local ice cream dairies. We had Rocky Road, Heavenly Hash and the more local 'Tin Roof's. I miss them all, and sit down Italian restaurants having Spumoni ice cream for dessert.

u/jeskimo 23h ago

Store brands and Edys make Rock and Road. That's all I can find here in Washington.

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 23h ago

I would buy a carton of chocolate, a bag of marshmallows (cut up) and whatever nut you like, and blend away. :) You've just made your own rocky road! Sound complicated and messy? Maybe, but it might be fun and clean up would taste great! LOL

u/greina23 23h ago

I don't pay attention to other brands, the brand I buy is Blue Bell (my husband will on occasion buy Tillamook & Talenti, but he's not a Rocky Road fan) and they have sell Rocky Road.

I went to a candy shop recently and they sell Thrifty's ice cream; I saw they had Rocky Road.

Admittedly I live in Arizona, so it can and more than likely is different from your location.

I did open two of my local grocery store apps, searched under Rocky Road and it listed all brands and the aisles where they can be found.

Edited for spelling

u/tamesage 23h ago

Dreyers or Edys!! Best Rocky road.

u/Warningwaffle 23h ago

I think it might be out looking for Tin Roof Sundae. That one has been missing for a long time.

u/atinytigress 23h ago

Some companies may have phased it out because of the cost of the almonds

u/partialcremation 23h ago

It's available everytime I go to buy it. 🤭

u/pain_is_bread 23h ago

This is heavy on my mind. Even when I happen to find Rocky Road in the wild, it’s not the same mix that I had growing up.

u/ABigFuckingSword 23h ago

I’m in central MO - I get the Edy’s Xtra Rocky Road from Dollar General! Rocky Road is my favorite and this is the best rocky road.

u/Marigold1976 23h ago

It’s somewhere safe with Butter Pecan.

u/AreaManThinks 23h ago

Hagan Das has a great one.

u/Brave-Chain2703 23h ago

It's the goat

u/BertaRocks 23h ago

I know Aldi and Walmart carry it in the south east. It’s a regular rotation in our house.

u/reesesbigcup 23h ago edited 22h ago

Many tubs of Rocky Road at my local Krogers. But I have never seen any spumoni. Local Italian restaurant has it. Gotta check some other stores.

u/ExternalMaximum6662 23h ago

Kroger has Rocky road ice cream.

u/Apprehensive-Bag-900 23h ago

Weird it's a regular flavor at every grocery store I shop at and I remember it at my local ice cream parlor too. Blue Bell sells rocky road

u/panzer_boi 22h ago

Honestly, Kroger in Ohio still keeps it on the shelf if you check the back freezer. Good luck finding it elsewhere though.

u/turnitwayup 22h ago

My local Kroger has been selling Thrifty’s Rocky Road. My local ice cream shop calls theirs Rocky Rage but I wasn’t paying attention to if it had real marshmallows when I was there yesterday.

u/geekofthegalaxy 22h ago

It’s very popular and often sells out when ice cream goes on sale in our area. It’s my wife’s favorite and finding it is hard sometimes usually because the best rocky roads are usually picked first by other shoppers

u/daydreamingaway86 22h ago

I love Haagen dazs Rocky road and cannot find it anywhere anymore! It makes me so sad.

u/rockfordred 22h ago

Kemp’s used to make the best. I called them to ask why they don’t make it anymore and they said they do but it’s only made for food service. Pisses me off that I can’t get it in the grocery store.

u/ObviousToe1636 22h ago

By ice cream stores do you mean stores that ONLY sell ice cream, like Baskin Robbins? I have not been inside a Baskin Robbins in 25 years, but I buy the Dreyer’s rocky road from the grocery store all the time. It goes on sale relatively often, so I usually buy 2-4 at a time. I’ve purchased as many as 8 at once. It has real marshmallows (I won’t eat rocky road with the marshmallow swirl).

u/anonymouscog 22h ago

It's all over the place here. If it isn't in your stores, do you have a Badkin Robbins?

u/RadiantCarpenter1498 22h ago

The only Rocky Road I’ve been able to find is Breyers Carb Smart Rocky Road.

u/SilkyPeach_XO 21h ago

Ben and Jerry’s!

u/Moonrock214 21h ago

found it at kroger yesterday.

u/AlternativeReading10 21h ago

Baskin and Robbin’s has gone downhill they were the best I could find. Häagen-Dazs does a marshmallow swirl which does not work. I feel your pain.

u/Popular-Deal-1481 21h ago

This conversation is making me crave ice cream! Im going out to get me some!

u/paul02087 21h ago

Blue Bell has primo rocky road.

u/JunkMale975 20h ago

I’m that way with chocolate chip. Only kind I can find now is mint chocolate chip. I hate mint.

u/Recent_Nobody_9839 20h ago

Rocky Road deserves a comeback! 🍦

u/Stormy31568 20h ago

Baskin Robbin’s has great Rocky Road

u/Prestigious-Web4824 19h ago

Tillamook makes Rocky Road. I haven't tried it, but their other flavors are excellent.

u/CyndiIsOnReddit 19h ago

I have some in my freezer right now because it's the only flavor with chunky chocolate that doesn't have peanut butter. I think it's my favorite, but really I don't see it at ice cream shops, just in tubs.

u/featurescreature 19h ago

Walmart has a rocky road that I really like, but it's not chunky like original rocky road.

u/ZebraBorgata 19h ago

Rocky Road is one of my all time favorites!

u/OstensibleFirkin 19h ago

This is the one ice cream that stays hanging out in the freezer until someone gets really desperate.

u/Substantial-Tea-5287 18h ago

Edy’s makes a pretty good one.

u/MyPublicFace 17h ago

I blame Baljeet.

u/otter_mayhem 17h ago

I see it here and there. I'm in the south. I also haven't seen Heavenly Hash in forever and I really liked it.

u/Spindrift850 16h ago

Rock kee roaaad???

u/SubstantialArcher659 16h ago

Ben and Jerry’s still has it

u/Tom_Art_UFO 15h ago

Yeah, and what happened to Heavenly Hash ice cream? We used to be a proper country!

u/JenniferJuniper6 15h ago

I want to know what happened to spumoni. Didn’t all the Italian restaurants used to have it as part of their kids’ menus? (I’m not above ordering ice cream off the kids’ menu.)

u/1InvisibleStranger 15h ago

Baskin Robbins has the best Rocky Road!! I live in SoCal and some of our grocery stores have started selling BR ice cream tubs. If you have a local BR definitely call, make sure they have some in stock and then go enjoy!

u/Dogzillas_Mom 15h ago

Also, where has chocolate almond gone?

u/into_outdoors 14h ago

I never liked Rocky Road, but wow... It has seemingly disappeared. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it.

It was extremely popular during my life (56yo), seemingly as popular as chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. I couldn't imagine one of those just disappeared.

Now you have me wondering...

u/galaxy_wlw 14h ago

I think baskin-robbins has the real marshmallows

u/sharkbomb 13h ago

not true. i just saw it in 2 different stores.

u/StOnEy333 12h ago

Buy chocolate ice cream. Add marshmallows and nuts. Boom. You got rocky road ice cream.

u/RileysBS 12h ago

I just bought some from Braums, it's my favorite!

u/whosthebigwinner 12h ago

If you haven’t tried Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food, then you haven’t lived a full life. I loved Rocky Road growing up, then when I developed Diverticulitis, I swore off nuts of any kind.

u/ggk1 11h ago

Learning that Braums and blue bell confidently serving rocky road while apparently the rest of the country misses it may be what ultimately keeps me living in the south

u/k8319 11h ago

Aldis has rocky road

u/SwitchOdd5322 10h ago

I have Tillamook rocky road in my freezer right now!!! It has great mini marshmallows but not enough almonds!

u/CatsEatGrass 10h ago

Still at Baskin Robbin’s.

u/PlentyOMangos 8h ago

In my freezer

u/GrowlingAtTheWorld 8h ago

Where ever butterscotch topping has gone I expect.

u/brettyrocks 5h ago

I avoided getting it at Dollar General last night. I went with salted caramel pretzel instead.
