Question Anyway to disable CarPlay from hijacking car audio?
So damn annoying.
Sometimes I’m parked somewhere or a passenger doing something on my phone, and I’ll select “iPhone Speaker” in Control Center, but then I open almost any app and my iPhone immediately starts streaming the audio to my car anyway even though I literally just selected “iPhone Speaker” to keep the audio on my phone.

This is an Apple software issue and I have found no way to change it. Apple allows any app developer to "seize" control over audio output when the app is active. CarPlay then interprets that as meaning that you must want whatever audio the app is producing to be routed through CarPlay. Even apps that are not producing any audio content can and do seize control and mute whatever audio source you were listening to. The underlying concept seems to be that Apple does not want to enable you to use a phone directly when it is connected to CarPlay.

I find it if I open the app it will take over, but once I select my phone speaker as the output source on my phone it will then let me use the car audio for the radio etc. and the app sound will come out of my phone instead.

I go into my settings > Bluetooth > choose the car > disable CarPlay. Your car might also take over via regular Bluetooth so you would want to completely turn Bluetooth off in that case (either on your phone or car). Make sure you aren’t connected via wire either
