NO ONE SHUTS OUT BETHUNE-COOKMAN

Alex Grinch disasterclass tbh

u/Lord777alt Oklahoma Sooners • Team Chaos 4d ago

Wait is he yalls dc?

u/QuadCring3 UCF Knights 4d ago

Yes, and he's genuinely been the biggest surprise of the frost 2.0 era, he's honestly been a great DC for us which literally no one expected

u/XrayGuy08 Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago

Oh man, I remember this hire being absolutely blasted by everyone. Including me. But yeah, he’s been much better than we thought.

u/Lord777alt Oklahoma Sooners • Team Chaos 4d ago

Interesting. I suppose after failing at OU and USC he improved.

u/thefishwhisperer1 UCF Knights • UIndy Greyhounds 3d ago

In the few interviews he did when UCF hired him, he said he fully admits his schemes got too complicated for kids to execute.

Now we're basically running a base 4-3 defense and it's working. Maybe he's the rare coach that actually admits being wrong and changing.

Stares at Gus Malzahn

u/Galumpadump Washington State • Cascade Cla… 4d ago

He was good at WSU doing the speed D. He is a guy who I think is better when he has constraints.

u/momentousconspiracyL 4d ago

That's the spirit, gotta find the moral victory somewhere in a 73 point shellacking.

u/IllustriousLobster36 Nebraska Cornhuskers 4d ago

That actually made me laugh out loud.

u/SGDrummer7 UCF Knights • Big 12 4d ago

We would’ve taken our foot off the gas sooner, but we wanted to punish yall for not bringing your band and robbing us of a great halftime performance.

u/Cogswobble UCF Knights • Oregon State Beavers 4d ago

I went to a BC (or maybe FAMU) game at UCF many years ago when they brought their band…but it was raining and they had to perform from the stands.

I was very sad :-(

u/QuadCring3 UCF Knights 4d ago

Most likely FAMU, last time BCU came we did a joint halftime for 9/11

u/a313hooker Florida State Seminoles 3d ago

Missing a true B-CU halftime show was the real 9/11 tragedy.

u/QuadCring3 UCF Knights 4d ago

Their band has a massive performance in alabama this weekend, 100% makes sense why they didn't come even though it did suck not having them there

u/LiteHedded UCF • Mississippi State 3d ago

They also charge a fee. Which UCF would obviously not pay

u/ItsFreakinHarry2 UCF Knights • Michigan Wolverines 4d ago

UCF fans finally seeing a QB who can throw a football:

10,000 YEARS WILL GIVE YOU SUCH A CRICK IN THE NECK

u/akrasia85 UCF Knights 4d ago

I honestly thought Barbara Goodson had passed away, but I'm happy to report the internet swears she's still alive.

More to the topic at hand, it does in fact feel like it's been that long since we've had a passable QB

u/NPVinny UCF Knights • Team Chaos 4d ago

Maybe you were thinking of the Japanese actress who played Rita (Bandora), Machiko Soga. She passed away 20 years ago.

u/akrasia85 UCF Knights 4d ago

Hard to say. It could be that, or it could be the rash of people dying, including Optimius Prime, that just dampered that hope

u/PPtheShort UCF Knights 4d ago

This exact same comment can be found in the first game thread in each of the past 5 seasons at least

u/Usual-Web7597 UCF Knights 4d ago

No way, KJ Jefferson looked awful in his debut. Throwing up absolute ducks against New Hampshire state

u/PPtheShort UCF Knights 4d ago

I'm sure there were still people acting like we finally found the guy with him. Hell people were talking like that about TIMMY MCCLAIN

u/TheAndrewBrown UCF Knights 4d ago

I remember being extremely worried and most people I talked to on here were also very worried. There was definitely more excitement about Tayven but that’s partially because KJ was so bad and Tayven came in and won the game after Fancher was losing it. But it was still not great since we almost lost to Jacksonville State. This year definitely feels far better.

u/crashck UCF Knights • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4d ago

There were people in the threads that thought it was nerves or something lmao I couldnt believe how bad he was

u/Fastbird33 UCF Knights • FAU Owls 4d ago

Fancher was ass at FAU. How the hell did he win another starter job

u/LiteHedded UCF • Mississippi State 3d ago

MCCLAIN!!!!

u/FSZou Missouri Tigers • UCF Knights 4d ago

Last season's QB room was the worst abomination I have seen in this sport. It should not have existed, and once it did by no means should it have continued to exist. Someone should have put it out of its misery and run the wildcat for the rest of the year. We're lucky a singularity, a plague, or God knows what didn't come out of putting that shit on TV every week.

u/CieraVotedOutHerMom South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

u/fade2blac Big 12 • UCF Knights 4d ago

u/Nike_Phoros UCF Knights 3d ago

u/UndercoverDimension UCF Knights 2d ago

In Godfrey we trust!

u/kroghman UCF Knights • Big 12 2d ago

Don’t minimize Latavius Murray. Godfrey was better than the guys we’ve marched out over the past few years. The recent QBs were negatives.

Don't forget Rob Calabrese who Godfrey took over for.

UCF starting QB's since 2021:

2021: Dillon Gabriel. Mikey Keene.

2022: John Rhys Plumlee. Mikey Keene. Tommy Castellanos.

2023: John Rhys Plumlee. Timmy McClain.

2024: KJ Jefferson. EJ Colson. Jacurri Brown. Dylan Rizk.

2025: Tayven Jackson. Cam Fancher.

It's been nearly 5 years & 60 games since UCF had a real, honest-to-god high-level Quarterback. Since Dillon Gabrial got injured Week 3 vs Louisville.

Mikey Keene was good, and could've developed into something special, but Gus Malzahn didn't know how to use him, preferred Plumlee and ended up driving Keene out of town. Same with Castellanos.

After that it was a string of QB's that couldn't pass further than 8 yards, were run-first, and/or were made of glass. Or in KJ Jefferson's case, got the NIL bag and immediately checked-out.

Here's to hoping Barnett is the real deal. We desperately need it. He looked better than anyone we've had since Keene. His deep ball looked a little off. But everything else was miles better than...gestures up at the list

Never forget when Wimbush lost the starting job after the first quarter to Gabriel

u/Jumpy-Coffee-Cat UCF Knights • Big 12 4d ago

Pretty sure he lost in in training camp but got the nod for the tuneup game

u/TheAndrewBrown UCF Knights 4d ago

There was a point where like 5 starting QBs in FBS were former UCF QBs. Not included on this list is Parker Navarro who never started for us but ended up starting at Ohio.

u/PPtheShort UCF Knights 4d ago

We like to forget about that too

u/legend023 Tulane Green Wave • LSU Tigers 4d ago

I remember Plumlee at Ole Miss. Dude ran a 4.3

u/kingofthesqueal UCF Knights • Summertime Lover 4d ago

Plumlee was a late round draft pick RB/WR masquerading as a D2 QB.

He had heart, but at some point a catch should have sat him down and told him how it was.

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights 4d ago

Plumlee was fine, he was far from the problem with those two years. His inability to stay healthy was certainly an issue. The fact Gus' offense is allergic to coherent passing wasn't great either. There was like one game those two years where Plumlee was a problem, and even in that game I am pretty sure the defense didn't get a stop until the 4th.

u/TheFreightGuy UCF Knights • Florida Gators 3d ago

I never understood the Plumlee hate. He wasn't perfect but was a good fit for the offense and played his ass off. Best QB we had for a while there

u/Comprehensive_Bus_19 UCF Knights • War on I-4 3d ago

Buddy looked for contact like a heat seeking missile. Lockheed Martin would've sponsored his NIL if he played nowadays

u/Cogswobble UCF Knights • Oregon State Beavers 4d ago

u/igonnawrecku_VGC James Madison • Penn State 4d ago

Barnett is the real deal. He’s gonna have a couple absolutely atrocious blown checkdowns per game, but he’ll typically make up for it and then some as the game goes on

u/SportsCat4 UCF Knights • Big 12 4d ago

At Pittsburgh will be the real test but great performance to build momentum entering that game

Feels like the Pittsburgh game is must win especially with how we haven't won in 3 years away in Non Conference and have only won 3 of our last 16 away games

u/Comprehensive_Bus_19 UCF Knights • War on I-4 3d ago

I agree.

I love to see that our QB made smart decisions, avoided unnecessary hits and could complete the short passes that we couldn't make in years past.

The score was irrelevant but watching how we played gave me hope (we cooked chat)

u/Igwanea UCF Knights • Alabama Crimson Tide 4d ago

I'm not gonna buy into any hype until we've played an FBS team, but this team has SIGNIFICANTLY fewer unforced errors than any UCF team jn the past half decade. I was pleased.

u/christdavis034 UCF Knights 3d ago

This is how I feel too. My hopes for the season haven’t moved. Just want to see some momentum and a bowl game. But one thing that blew expectations out of the water for me is how fun this group seems; it’s been so hard to tell with all the transfers over the last few years. I really missed this style of offense, too.

u/Epcplayer UCF Knights 4d ago

It’s not a Scott Frost team if the defense hasn’t given up at least one score

u/Comprehensive_Bus_19 UCF Knights • War on I-4 3d ago

When you're pulling random fat kids out of the stands to play D line at the end of the game for funsies I don't really care

I was working here for the first time taking a shift in one of the stands. I don't watch football but when I heard the touchdowns in the first hour. I was laughing my ass off. I just kept hearing UCF TOUCHDOWN!!!. even the first one was funny to me to how fast it was. It's like watching baseball and we got back to back home runs in the first inning.

We had a QB that made smart decisions, avoided contact when reasonable and completed short passes with ease. Something we havent had since DG.

Our RB room looks solid but our O Line is bad.

Defense looks much improved as well.

u/virii01 Nebraska • Chadron State 4d ago

Another national championship season loading.....

u/dagreenman18 UCF Knights • Team Chaos 4d ago

I’m actually upset we didn’t push for the record. What better way to start the season than breaking the conference record?! They basically just gave up

u/thelandman19 UCF Knights • Fiesta Bowl 4d ago

We broke the margin of victory record. TBH anything beyond that was approaching disrespectful

u/dagreenman18 UCF Knights • Team Chaos 4d ago

But we were in perfect position to at least break the school scoring record with a field goal and didn’t even try! That would have totally been within reason

u/Mindless_Luck7553 4d ago

I disagree, imagine Barnett breaking his leg trying to break 80. Or coming out of week 1 thinking you’re the best and go into Pitt with an arrogance.

I think taking the foot off the gas and even letting BCU score was a good call. Creates a sense of humility

u/Jumpy-Coffee-Cat UCF Knights • Big 12 4d ago

I think they mean the backups who were more than capable of scoring more points

u/Mindless_Luck7553 4d ago

Regardless, is a backup potential injury really worth winning 73-6 compared to 80-6?

Since that Ed Reed Instagram video, BCU football had a 6-6 season in 2025, baseball was 38-20 this year (receiving coaches poll votes at times and winning midweek games over LSU and Florida) after making the 2025 NCAA tournament, and men’s basketball has had three straight winning seasons.

Crazy

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights 4d ago

I was less than impressed by Barnett. I am also not sold on this OLine at all. BCU got to Barnet far more than they should have for me to not be concerned. Barnett also missed some bad throws. Most of his good work was short passing, which is great to be able to do, but if all you can do is throw short, it will be difficult to open the running attack against a team that doesn't get bowled over in run blocking. His INT was a terrible throw in both execution and concept. He doesn't have to bomb the ball downfield every play, but I also don't recall any solid throws downfield. Some decent short throws that got taken longer and most longer passes were kind of mediocre/ass.

u/KnightlyDolphins UCF Knights 3d ago

He played like a QB who missed all of spring camp. Patience. It’s one game. The stuff he lacked in is improvable.

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights 3d ago

That's fine, but the same thing was said about jefferson 2 years ago. We don't have to bomb it downfield all the time, but we do need someone who can punish opposing teams if they creep forward. The fee shots I saw last night did not provide comfort in that regard.

u/KnightlyDolphins UCF Knights 3d ago

I think you are still suffering from Gus Malzahn PTSD. Frost has proven that he is a much better QB developer than Gus if he has time and money to bring them in. Even at Nebraska, their offensives scheme was decent with Adrian Martinez.

u/Sad_Bolt UCF Knights 3d ago

Barnett is a bandaid while we get Marriott up too football speed. As for the o-line I don't think we've ever had a good one but if this team can get 7 wins this season thats good anymore would be a great season. Next year will be the make or break year for this group.
