Given how much is being forced on Amazon and truck drivers, like eye detection and hands on wheel detection. Im surprised generic tools like "are they are their phone" isnt standard on working big vehicals.

Where I live the cops need those too. I’m constantly seeing them wandering into the bike lane because they’re staring at the laptop while going down the road.

I remember seeing someone complain about cops driving while looking at their laptop screen at some sort of town hall meeting. The chief excused it by saying that the officers are highly trained. I'd love to know what kind of training one allows you to know what's in front of you without looking.

I once almost got T-boned by a cop. I had a green light, he had red but accelerated into the intersection before even hitting his lights and siren. Absolutely careless. Luckily, he was able to stop in time and I had room to swerve away.

Eye detection and hands on wheel detection are standard in the last couple of cars I’ve driven. Which I don’t mind, except that with the polarized lens I wear in my glasses, if the sun is hitting them from a certain angle, the camera can’t see my eyes and the car starts having a conniption fit.
/I think they fixed that in a software update

The thing is…just acknowledging your phone exists while in the cab will get you a no questions asked termination, let alone touching your phone when the vehicle is on and moving. The real solution is better pay and work environments so the good operators that aren’t stupid enough to do this don’t leave.

Trains have a concept called "positive control" which literally forces you to be pushing on controls or the train autobrakes.
Its considered the standard on heavy rail but is slow to roll out.

Aren't modern trams supposed to have hand and feet "deadman" switch that you either have to keep pressed or press at random moments?

A deadman isn’t really modern trains, it was decided to not be enough to ensure operators are alert.
Now they are built with a “vigilance” system where the operator has to press one of several buttons (usually including moving the stick by a
minimum angle) regularly. If there are no operationally necessary buttons they need to press within the interval there is a separate button to reset the timer.•

It can be just a pedal that needs to be held down and released at certain intervals,
Or a sprung pedal that needs to be held at a medium position. Both allow for driving "hands free".

as a tram driver in Poland: in trams I drive, it's 100% a pedal that needs to be held down all the time when the tram has to be in motion
deadman pedal can be released at a standstill only, releasing it in motion will cause ALL types of brakes to engage at the same time
it's harsh, strong and brutal type of braking...
but yeah, in trams I drive that pedal would surely allow to drive one hand free (one hand needs to be on the joystick on the left side, joystick in newer trams is like a gas and brake pedal - pulling forward is gas, pulling back is brake; if You set it in neutral position, it will cause the tram to coast)

My dad knew an engineer for BN back in the 80's and got us a ride on a switcher for a couple hours. The dude had a gym bag filled with rocks or something he'd put on the Deadman footbar. Haha!
