You nailed it. I watched it when I was way too young on toonami and loved it. Watched it again as an adult and its not just nostalgia, it's legitimately great. Not just a great anime but literally a work of art. The jazz influences, the philosophic questions it plays with, it's its own thing.

I had a discussion last week with a couple of people who claimed AoT and Death Note are peak anime. They did not know Cowboy Bebop, Berserk or Full metal Alchemist brotherhood. I’m not dissing the newer stuff, but Cowboy Bebop is amazing even from the soundtrack point of view.

I’m not saying AOT isn’t peak, but lots of people speak of it as if it was an exception, the only “good” anime that could be considered among the best shows in history of TV while anime in general is bad or cringy, and it makes me think it’s the only anime they have ever watched, or that they never watched anything older

Just curious- why do you prefer Cowboy Bebop over AOT?
I watched it around 4 years ago and it’s obviously a great show. Loved the characters and themes but it didn’t surpass AOT or Evangelion for me (which I also just finished at the time)
I do agree a lot of AOT fans can be dismissive of other shows by constantly comparing them to AOT

Of course preference is just opinions, but to me its perfect, and goes beyond what I thought an excellent anime could be. To me, it’s so much more than just a well animated anime with a great serialized story (which it doesn’t really have, as it doesn’t have much of an arc except for 5 scattered episodes of Vicious and it’s overall episodic), as it is pretty artistic and unique without becoming boringly artsy or pretentious because it’s so much fun, has so much personality, a really good vibe, well written characters. I love everything, the composition of the images, the color, the humour, the music, the setting, the retrophuturism.
It’s like it’s very own thing, and it works, and it’s pretty awesome, even the most “impactless” episode is great and it also homages lots of cinema. And when the Vicious episodes do happen, they are just magical, like the ending of the fifth episode which is one of my favourite sequences in anime. Also the ending is great, starting from the Ed and Ein episode which breaks my heart (along with the song “call me call me”), and the very final episode, all that ending sequence is pure cinema, and the ending with a literal bang was just the cherry on top of the cake. Love it, really!

I'm like 5 episodes in but this has been the hardest watch so far, I haven't liked a single thing about it so far and I'm starting to worry that I'm not going to think it's the masterpiece I expected it to be. Hope I'm wrong.. I just hope I don't feel the same way I felt after Doki Doki Literature Club, that was the most overrated trash I've ever experienced and the payoff was nowhere near good enough to warrant having to slog through so much shit

I never really cared for the music school episode, but even so its pretty much always been one of my top 3 and is the anime I've rewatched more than any other.
But that's just it, it tries a lot of different things, so some episodes can be hit or miss, but its at least always trying something.

Really short slice of life anime with just 10 episodes, but every single episode hit me in the feels and made me bawl my eyes out 🥲 I binged the whole thing in one sitting and was devastated when it ended 😭

Honestly I'd argue that between the library fire and dinner party reveal you could trim pretty much all of that. To be clear I love monster and i think the kinderheim stuff works. I genuinely love the end climax but the Anna swap adds literally nothing to the pathos of the villain. And even if you keep that part in the build up to that reveal just kills the momentum of the arc, which should be the piece that let's tenma crack the case.

My mom thought it was kind of ridiculous I still watched animated shows at 30+ y/o.
I sat her down one day and made her watch a few episodes of Attack on Titan with me, she binged the rest of it in under a week, on her own lol
Admitedly the first half of season 3 is a bit on the less good end for some people? I have a few friends I got into AoT and they all stopped midway through season 3 for some reason.

I get it, mid s3 I think's confusing af. I got spoiled about s4 and thats honestly whats kept me going. I'm weird because I really don't mind being spoiled, as it helps wonder how the specific element being shown on screen connects to what I know will happen.
I feel in this regard that most of s3 is very much in that line of : you won't know wtv the fuck is happening rn but it will all make sense eventually lol.

Mononoke, the 2007 tv series that was a spin off from one of the episodes in the Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales series. It's got such a different visual style compared to everything else, and is both beautiful and disturbing.
Big mention for Space Dandy, the true spiritual successor to Cowboy Bebop.
