What is something that people commonly think is true, that is actually a myth?

I am rapidly realizing I should have phrased this question better. half the posts are myths, half the posts are the opposites of myths.

EDIT: So far this thread has recieved:

  • 20 responses that shaving your hair to make it grow back thicker is a myth
  • 18 responses that going out in the cold will not make you sick

  • 5 responses the bible is a myth

So, I'm assuming you just question the number, not the Holocaust itself. Which, actually… You're kind of right. "6 Million" is a rounded number.

The thing you don't seem to get, though, is that research has been done to try to accurately number the deaths. LOTS of research. And although not all the numbers agree one hundred percent, they all come awfully damn close to each other. This is attributed to different methodologies and access to different information and records for each of the studies.

Almost all of the studies have one common method, though, that universally comes out almost exactly the same each time it's used. The insignificant differences are, again, attributed to access to records that former studies may not have had.

How many Jews were murdered in the Holocaust? How do we know?Do we have their names?

There is no precise figure for the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust. The figure commonly used is the six million quoted by Adolf Eichmann, a senior SS official. Most research confirms that the number of victims was between five and six million. Early calculations range from 5.1 million (Professor Raul Hilberg) to 5.95 million (Jacob Leschinsky). More recent research, by Professor Yisrael Gutman and Dr. Robert Rozett in the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust, estimates the Jewish losses at 5.59–5.86 million, and a study headed by Dr. Wolfgang Benz presents a range from 5.29 million to six million.

The main sources for these statistics are comparisons of prewar censuses with postwar censuses and population estimates. This figure is based primarily on some two millionand a half Pages of Testimony, which often contain information about more than one Jew who perished in the Holocaust. As of early June 1999, more than 1.6 million Pages of Testimony had been computerized. In addition, we have thousands of documents containing names from the Holocaust era, many of which are those of victims. This body of documentation has yet to be fully researched and added to our computerized database. Eventually we hope, through our computerization project, to provide as much information as possible about each victim.

Now… regardless of the fact that so many people use the popular rounding of "6 Million" hardly any scholars would agree with that, and… I suspect most people know that in actual fact it was "around" 6 million.

The fact of the matter is that we know by an amazing amount of data that it was over 5 million at the very least and that it at least approached 6 million by hundreds.

The "sheeple" are the people who cannot seem to wrap their head around the fact that this data exists, is real, has been studied by mathematicians, historians, social scientists, government agencies, and countless private institutions and they all fucking agree.

The "sheeple" are the ones who have ensconced themselves into a worldview so deeply as to assume it as part of their very identity. They feel superior because they feel they have found some secret truth that only an elite few have. And in order to maintain that delusion so that the may continue to have those feelings of superiority they become insular within their group, claim they are oppressed and victimized, shut out any information counter to their worldview (even with the information is demonstrable), and ultimately villainize those they see as threatening their secure little bubble.

My advice to you… try to imagine a world where you are wrong. What would happen? Would it mean to you that everything was wrong… your world would turn upside down? Would you lose friends and contacts… would you feel those same people lied to you? Would it feel like you had spent an extraordinary amount of time on this only to find out it was worth nothing? If you answer yes to those questions… than you should accept that you are far too attached to the view to be objective about it or to allow for the simple human trait of being mistaken.

TL;DR:

You are wrong. There is actual evidence to prove you are wrong, but you are too attached to your worldview to allow for it, and so you have become that which you hate… a "sheeple."

Automatic dismissal of conspiracy as lunacy is something that has been programmed into you sheeple, so I'm not surprised you believe conspiracy theorists are deluded. Of course many conspiracies can be false and there are gullable fools such as yourself, but that should not discredit all conspiracy theorists nor give reason to criticize the use of the word "sheeple. I don't know what source I could give you that you would deem credible. For me it is more about putting two and two together than any smoking gun. Maybe these old newspapers will help you figure out why the 6 million figure is bullshit.

What has become clear is there is a pattern of significance in that number to the powers that be. I don't know what it is, some people think its jewish prophesy based on some rabbis translation of one of the Talmuds.http://www.biblebelievers.org.au/images/tashuvu1.gif

Rabbinical translations always seem like a stretch to me but I haven't heard any other explanation. In addition you can read all the widely conflicting reports of Jewish populations in Germany and Europe, and estimate if it was possible that the nazis executed 6 million of them.

The first reference comming from an official nazi himself, confirming the 6 million number during the showtrials at Nuremberg. After his capture and subsequent "interrogation" of course.
